Building Fundable Startups in the AI Era
Building Fundable Startups in the AI Era
### Building Fundable Startups in the AI Era Around Real Problems **Date:** Tuesday 28th April, 6:15-9 PM UK Time **Location:** [1 Warwick by Maslow’s](https://share.google/MnxwD6w1PqaJ512K6) This event is now fully booked and operating a waitlist. Please note — clicking “Attend” on Meetup does not count as a valid ticket. Entry is only permitted with a valid Universe QR code. If you arrive at the venue without one, Maslow’s staff will not be able to admit you. To join, please sign up to the waitlist — you’ll be notified by email if a space becomes available. [Join the waitlist here!](https://founders500.com/session/startup-session-13-building-fundable-startups-in-the-ai-era/) ### The best startup ideas do not begin with a trend. They begin with a real problem. In a world where AI has made it easier than ever to build software, more startups are launching faster, pitching better, and competing harder than ever before. So what actually stands out now? This Founders500 X Signal session is for founders, aspiring founders, engineers, data scientists and AI builders who want to understand how great ventures are really built today: by solving meaningful problems, validating real value, and understanding what investors now look for in an increasingly crowded market. Led as a live conversation with **Nikolas Pyrgiotis**, this session will explore how the venture landscape is changing, how AI is reshaping startup expectations, and why domain expertise, market understanding and practical problem selection matter more than ever. ### What this session is This is not a hype-filled “future of AI” talk. This is not generic startup inspiration. This is a practical session on: * how investors assess startups in the current AI landscape * how technical founders can identify worthwhile problems * how stronger companies are being built with less capital * what makes a startup genuinely fundable now * where real-world industries still present major opportunities for innovation ### What we’ll cover #### 1) What VCs are really looking for now AI has lowered the barrier to building software, but it has also raised the bar for differentiation. We’ll discuss: * how investor expectations are changing * what now matters beyond a polished pitch deck * why sector expertise and founder credibility are becoming more important * how startups should prepare for fundraising conversations today #### 2) How AI is changing startup building It is now easier to launch, prototype and ship than ever before. But that creates new questions: * what does capital-efficient startup building look like now? * should founders raise earlier or later? * how is the path from seed to scale changing? * what does stronger competition mean for builders and investors alike? #### 3) Why the best startups start with the right problem One of the biggest themes of the evening will be problem selection. We’ll explore: * why great startups do not start with a solution * how to identify a problem worth solving * how to think about market size, value creation and customer need * how founders can validate whether an opportunity is commercially meaningful #### 4) Real-world opportunities for technical founders For engineers, AI builders and data scientists, some of the most exciting opportunities are no longer just in consumer apps or SaaS. This session will also touch on: * how technology is transforming established industries * why sectors like logistics, supply chain and maritime are becoming more attractive to startup talent * what technical founders can learn from industries rich in operational complexity and data * where applied AI can create real defensibility and value ### Why attend Attend this session if you want to: * understand what makes a startup stand out in the AI era * hear directly how an investor evaluates founders, markets and opportunities * sharpen your thinking around fundraising and venture readiness * learn how to move from technical capability to commercial opportunity * discover how real-world sectors can create space for ambitious startups * join a room full of founders, future founders and technical builders ### About the speaker **Nikolas Pyrgiotis** leads ventures and investments at Signal, where he focuses on opportunities across logistics and supply chain. His background spans engineering, applied mathematics, company building and venture creation — from a PhD rooted in practical optimisation, to co-founding in aviation, to strategy and venture work, to investing in startups solving real-world industry problems. This makes him uniquely placed to speak to both sides of the room: founders looking to build fundable companies, and technical builders looking for meaningful problems worth solving. ### Evening schedule **6:15pm — Doors Open + Free Drinks** **6:45pm — Session Begins** **6:45–8:00pm — Interview** **8:00–8:30pm — Key Takeaways + Q&A** **8:30 pm onwards — Optional Networking**
Agents in Production: The Memory Problem
Agents in Production: The Memory Problem
Agent memory is a mess. Most teams are stitching together a vector store, a graph database, and some middleware - three systems to manage, three potential failure points, and no guarantees that any of it stays consistent. It works until it doesn't. In this meetup, we're looking at what it actually takes to solve this properly. Not a quick fix, not another abstraction layer - memory that's transactional, structured, and built into the database itself. We'll look show what that looks like in practice with Spectron, SurrealDB's brand new agent memory system. We'll also walk through a full-stack knowledge graph RAG system - end-to-end, real code, real trade-offs - plus a guest talk from LangChain. Hard questions welcome. Drinks & pizza on us. *** **Talks** Tobie Morgan Hitchcock (CEO, SurrealDB) **Spectron: What agent memory looks like when it's built into the database** Martin (Solutions Engineer, SurrealDB) **Full-stack knowledge graph RAG with agentic memory** Igor Repka (Solutions Architect, LangChain) **Details coming soon!** *** **Agenda** * 18:00 - Doors + drinks + pizza * 18:30 - Welcome * 18:35 - Talks + Q&A * 20:00 - Drinks + networking * 20:30 - Close *** **About the speakers** **[Tobie Morgan Hitchcock](https://www.linkedin.com/in/tobiemorganhitchcock/) (CEO & Co-Founder, SurrealDB)** Tobie Morgan Hitchcock is CEO & Co-Founder of SurrealDB, an AI-native, multi-model database for modern applications. A tech entrepreneur and software engineer with 17 years in the software and cloud-computing industries, he founded SurrealDB in 2021 with a focus on distributed databases and highly-available architectures. **[Martin Schaer](https://www.linkedin.com/in/martinschaer/) (Solutions Engineer, SurrealDB)** Martin is a computer science engineer working at SurrealDB and his own GenAI startup. He recently worked in lab automation designing declarative frameworks for instrument drivers, and his background spans everything from 3D visualisation for robotic systems to founding an advertising agency in Costa Rica. **FAQs** **Is the venue accessible?** Absolutely! There is a lift that takes you up to Level 4 where the event is held. **Is this event for me?** SurrealDB events are for software engineers, developers, architects, data scientists, data engineers, or any tech professionals keen to discover more about SurrealDB: a scalable multi-model database that allows users and developers to focus on building their applications with ease and speed. **Am I guaranteed a ticket at this event?** Our events are tech-focused and in the interest of keeping our events relevant and meaningful for those attending, tickets are issued at our discretion. Vibe Coding Collective | Every Batman Needs an AI Agent
Vibe Coding Collective | Every Batman Needs an AI Agent
**Details 🚀** April 28 is Superhero Day. And no superhero leaves home without their Robin. This year, we're calling it an AI Agent. Join us for an exploration of AI agents: how they work, what they can actually *do*, and the workflows you never knew you needed them for! We'll be diving deeper than usual, hands-on with **Notion's** agent capabilities. Led by **[Liberatus](https://www.linkedin.com/in/liberatus/)** (ex-Amazon, recent Notion Hackathon winner), we'll discover the agentic way of building. **Complexity Level: ⭐⭐ (2/3 stars)** This one's a step up from our regular events. You'll get the most out of it if you've already played with prompting or understand how AI tools work. Coding skills aren't mandatory, but comfort with experimentation is! **Format 🛠️** Small groups (2–3 people) tackle open-ended challenges using Notion agents. The goal: learn how agents think differently, build something you didn't think was possible, and vibe with people who get it. Our friends from QuantSpark happily provided us with their space and will treat us with some snacks and refreshments 👾 **New to agents?** No worries! Liberatus kicks us off with a guide to agent fundamentals and example use cases so you can jump in without overthinking it. *** **Schedule 🕒** (Doors open early—aim for 6:50 PM so we start on time) * 6:00 – Presentation: Agent fundamentals from Liberatus * 6:15 – Challenge assignment + team formation 🤝 * 6:15 – Round 1: Build together 💻 * 7:00 – Break (grab a drink, swap ideas, compare what your agents are doing) 🍺 * 7:20 – Round 2: Keep building 🏗️ * 7:50 – Optional demos 📺 * 8:10 – Hang out, network, make friends ✌️ *** **Who is it for?** Anyone curious about what AI agents actually do. Folks who've tinkered with prompting, designers thinking about automation, people building with Notion, or anyone who wants to see where agent-powered workflows can go. **What to bring** * Laptop! 💻 * A workflow or problem you're curious about (optional, we have dummy data) 📋 * Vibes ⚡ 👉 No pressure, no gatekeeping. Just people exploring what agents can do, together. By signing up, you consent to the collection and sharing of your name, email address, photos, videos, and software, unless you explicitly opt out by informing the organizers.
Discuss & Social 🍷 Is TV making us dumb?
Discuss & Social 🍷 Is TV making us dumb?
From *Love Island* to binge-watching endless series, to doomscrolling suggestive videos on *TikTok*, modern media often prioritises drama and banter over genuine talent. By turning attention-seeking actors into instant celebrities, are we moving away from valuing intellect and hard work? Let's discus about whether modern media rewards dumbness and if we are losing something in the pursuit of easy entertainment. We'll discuss.. 1\. Why do we value relatability and entertainment over talent and skill? Is it lowering our standards? 2\. Is this modern media negatively influencing our mind and our perceptions of life\, relationships and society? 3\. What's the role of media businesses and should they be responsible for how they reward and influence these behaviours? *Join us for a relaxed group conversation where we explore the real life, the grey areas, and how our different cultures and backgrounds shape our views about key topics.* *Expect real talk, no judgment, and a chance to learn how others see it.* **\*Come for the discussion, stay for the friendships. Heartwarming by Hans Rocha Ijzerman
Heartwarming by Hans Rocha Ijzerman
In this event, we will discuss about a science or philosophy book chosen by London Science and Philosophy Book Club. The attendees will be divided into groups and each of them will focus on a chapter in the book. This month we will discuss about a fascinating book called Heartwarming by Hans Rocha Ijzerman. If you haven't read the book, it's no problem. I will bring you up to speed with the discussion materials. We will meet in a nice lounge area at 6 p.m for introductions. Please come on time so you will not miss out on valuable discussion midway. If you end up in the waitlist, feel free to show up. Book Description: A hot cup of tea, coffee, or cocoa is calming and comforting but how can holding a warm mug affect our emotions? In Heartwarming, social psychologist Hans Rocha IJzerman explores temperature through the long lens of evolution. Besides breathing, regulating body temperature is one of the most fundamental tasks for any animal. Like huddling penguins, we humans have long relied on one another to maintain our temperatures; over millennia, this instinct for thermoregulation has shaped our lives and culture. Temperature contributed to our evolution our upright walking, our loss of fur, and our big brains and now continues to affect our lives in unexpected ways, and the link from a warm mug to our emotions is anything but straightforward. Studies have shown, for example, that a chilly deliberation room can predispose a jury to convict and that a cold day can make us more likely to buy a house. Our mind-body connection works the other way, too: thinking about friendly or caring people can make us feel warmer. Understanding how we subconsciously strive to keep our temperature in an optimal range can help us in our relationships, jobs, and even in the world of social media. As IJzerman illuminates how temperature affects human sociality, he examines fascinating new questions: How will climate change impact society? Why are some people chronically cold, and others overheated? Can thermoregulation keep relationships closer, even across a distance? The answers offer new insights for all of us who want to better understand our bodies, our minds, and each other. Heartwarming takes readers on an engaging journey through the world, seen from the perspectives of coldness and warmth. Agenda: 6 p.m to 6:30 p.m: Introduction and Socializing 6:30 p.m to 9:30 p.m: Book Discussion 9:30 p.m to late night: Drinks, Dinner or Feel free to go home.

Only post photos of other members with their consent. Please note that this is a joint event with Kens Events. However if torrentail rain is forecast, check back to this webpage on the morning of the event. No large dogs and small children are allowed. **NOTICE of RISKS applicable for all walks:** Please dress appropriately for weather and terrain conditions. Only wear good sturdy shoes, with ankle support, and carry a bottle of water and necessary medication. You need to be moderately fit for this walk and able to walk for at least 8 miles. This walk is suitable for the average experienced hill walker. Expect some hills. Do not attend this walk if you do not fit that description or if you have a medical condition (especially heart and/or lung conditions) that may impact upon your capability of completing the walk. These walks are city walks and countryside walks where all the usual risks of injury during such walks apply resulting from interactions with road traffic, joggers, cyclists, e-scooters,other members of the public, animals (farm, domestic and wild), plants (allergic reactions), uneven surfaces, including portruding tree roots and potholes and there may be low overhanging branches. In these walks we cross busy roads, use towpaths alongside water, bridlepaths, country lanes and sometimes ill defined paths and tracks through woodland, bush and countryside. Some tracks may be muddy and slippery, and conditions may be wet and icy. The walk leader is not and does not purport to be a professional guide, or a medical professional, but is instead a like minded individual who also enjoys hill walking and who is familiar with the intended route. Do not attend this walk unless you accept and consent to the above risks. If you require insurance for these walks then you must arrange this yourself. **Please note that this is a joint event with Ken's Events.** **DISCLAIMER** All Ken's Events and events on this group are subject to the same disclaimer. SOLD OUT • PILOT THOUGHT EXPERIMENT WRITING WORKSHOP: cultivate curiosity :-)
**This event is full! [Here's the next one](https://www.meetup.com/thought-experiments-in-pubs/events/314193821).** A special event to share the creative practice of writing thought experiments. **In a nutshell, writing thought experiments creates opportunities to:** * investigate ideas (old and new) * work your imagination * write creatively and playfully * produce compelling conversation starters that you can share with friends and strangers to provoke great discussions Over the past 3 years, I've written over 200 thought experiments and learned a lot along the way. [Here's a bit more about why I enjoy the practice.](https://experimentsingroupwisdom.substack.com/p/writing-thought-experiments) **In this workshop,** I'll share my process and together we'll create new thought experiments by: * Identifying areas of interest * Gathering ingredients for thought experiments * Imagining scenarios * Constructing narratives * Generating relevant, thought provoking questions * Participating in a round of small group discussions - you can volunteer your new thought experiment, or if you'd rather, you can pick one out of the hat. **By the end of the evening** **we'll have** * had some thought provoking conversations * become familiar with a new method for creative thinking * written our own original material for future group discussions :-) Although we’ll be learning a new technique we'll also be aiming to have **an enjoyable evening, with good humour and fun**. This will be less like school and more like a fun TEiP night out with an additional creative twist. **Who should come:** Everyone! We believe that the more perspectives, the richer the conversation. This group is not about being experts, it is about thinking creatively together and learning new ways to develop and communicate ideas. **Tickets** Space is limited to 15-20 people and tickets are £15. I'd like to make this event accessible, so if cost is a barrier, please send me a DM. **Where we'll meet:** The Fitzroy Tavern in Fitzrovia. The nearest Tube stations are Goodge Street and Tottenham Court Road. We'll be upstairs in the Private Dining Room. Looking forward to meeting & talking with you! Disc Tues / BAFTA Winner: I SWEAR at Marcus Crosswoods!
Disc Tues / BAFTA Winner: I SWEAR at Marcus Crosswoods!
Join us as we get together to see the BAFTA-winning British biographical dark-comedy/drama, I SWEAR! The film is based on the true-life story of a Scottish man diagnosed with Tourette’s syndrome at an early age. Here are details, a trailer and our plan for this event: DESCRIPITON: This true-life story follows a Scottish man diagnosed with Tourette's at 15. Targeted as 'insane' by his peers, he struggled with a condition few had witnessed. In search of his life’s purpose, he began campaigning for better understanding and acceptance of the condition of Tourette's as an adult. The film is written/directed/produced by Kirk Jones and stars Robert Aramayo, Maxine Peake, Shirley Henderson and Peter Mullan. TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oeWqQN3snCU BUZZ & ACCLAIM: I Swear currently has an incredible 100% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which says: “A deft balance of prickly and sweet that's bound together by Robert Aramayo's knockout performance, I Swear doesn't sugarcoat the challenges of Tourette syndrome while delivering an uplifting tale of resilience.” Others call it, “"funny, fierce and full of heart!” The film was released earlier in the UK making it eligible for this year’s BAFTA’s where it won Best Casting and Best Lead Actor for Robert Aramayo. The film and Robert Aramayo's performance will be eligible for next year’s Oscars! PLAN: We’ll plan for a 7pm-ish showing and will meet in the bar area about 30 minutes before showtime! Once details are confirmed, advance ticket purchase is advised! Details will be confirmed/announced as the date gets closer. Should be a good one, Dan
Choose Your Movie: THE SHEEP DETECTIVES vs HOKUM at Cinemark Stoneridge!
Choose Your Movie: THE SHEEP DETECTIVES vs HOKUM at Cinemark Stoneridge!
Join us as we get together to see your choice of two VERY different movies – one sweet and wholesome – the other a terrifying folklore horror! Option 1 is the fun whodunnit-action-comedy-mystery led by Hugh Jackman, THE SHEEP DETECTIVES! Option 2 is the top-reviewed supernatural-horror-thriller starring Adam Scott, HOKUM! Here’s a description, trailer and plan for this event: THE SHEEP DETECTIVES: Every night a shepherd reads aloud a murder mystery, pretending his sheep can understand. When he is found dead, the sheep realize at once that it was a murder and think they know everything about how to go about solving it. The film is directed by Kyle Balda and take a look at this ensemble cast: Hugh Jackman, Nicholas Braun, Molly Gordon, Hong Chau and Emma Thompson and the voices of Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Chris O'Dowd, Regina Hall, Patrick Stewart, Bella Ramsey, Brett Goldstein and Rhys Darby. TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyZI5oM6hWk HOKUM: In this film, a horror writer visits an Irish inn to scatter his parents' ashes, unaware the property is said to be haunted by a witch. It is written/directed by Damian McCarthy stars Adam Scott, Peter Coonan, David Wilmot, Florence Ordesh and Austin Amelio. Hokum premiered to rave reviews at this year’s SXSW Festival and is being release by Neon. It is earning a stellar 97% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which calls it, “A classic haunted house story enriched with atmospheric folklore and perfectly-timed shocks!” TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVCIK_MPyhc PLAN: We’ll plan for a 7pm-ish showing of both films and will meet inside the theater lobby about 20 minutes before showtime. If the showtimes work out, we’ll try to get both groups together for a bite before the shows! Complete details and showtime will be confirmed/announced as the date gets closer. Look forward to seeing you there, Dan
Unknown Number: The High School Catfish
Unknown Number: The High School Catfish
A very unusual choice for his group... Unknown Number: High School Catfish is an American [true crime](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/True_crime "True crime") documentary film directed by [Skye Borgman](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skye_Borgman "Skye Borgman") and released to [streaming](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streaming_media "Streaming media") on [Netflix](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netflix "Netflix") on August 29, 2025. The documentary explores the events and investigation into an unknown person [cyberbully](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyberbullying "Cyberbullying") and [harassing](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harassment "Harassment") teenagers in [Beal City, Michigan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beal_City,_Michigan "Beal City, Michigan") using an unknown number via insults and sexual claims. It also explores the increasingly great impact of the harassment on the community, the eventual reveal of the culprit, and the trial that followed. IMPORTANT INFO: I strongly suggest not reading anything about it online before seeing it. It's best viewed with no previous knowledge. This documentary contains crude terminology and deals with cyberbullying, which may be a trigger for some folks. PLEASE NOTE - WE ARE STARTING AT 6:30, WHICH IS THIRTY MINUTES EARLIER THAN USUAL. Unfortunately, it is only available on Netflix. If you would like to attend but do not have Netflix, say so and maybe we can figure something out.

Walk & Talk About Life's Big Questions
Walk & Talk About Life's Big Questions
[The Board Walks](http://www.theboardwalks.com/) are for curious people who love deep conversations. If that sounds like you, **bring a thoughtful topic** and join us for a 5-mile walk (10,000+ steps!). **HOW IT WORKS** **Step 1: Bring a topic** Before you arrive, think of **one** topic you want to explore. A question. A thought that's been on your mind. An obsession you want to geek out on. This is your ticket to the event. **Step 2: Circle up & share** We gather in a circle. Your friendly walk host gives a speech to set the tone. Everyone shares: your name, what you're grateful for, and your topic. That's it. 60 seconds. **Step 3: Walk, talk & float** We walk 5 miles. You naturally drift into conversation with 2-3 people at a time, pulled by topics that spark your curiosity. When you're ready to move on, just say: "I'm going to float!" **Step 4: Feel more alive** Two hours flies by. You're back where you started — but you feel different. More alive. More energized. More connected to yourself and others. That's why regulars join 20+ times. *For more details, read our [Orientation Guide.](https://www.theboardwalks.com/orientation)* **HOW TO BRING A GREAT TOPIC** A great topic = something you're genuinely curious about. Recent topics include: * "What are you passionate about right now?" * "What makes a good friend?" * "What's a belief you used to hold that you've completely changed?" * "How do you want to be remembered?" * "What would you do if money wasn't a factor?" Think of your topic like the dish you're bringing to our conversational potluck. If everyone brings an A+ dish (i.e. energizing, uplifting, expansive), we'll all walk away feeling lighter and brighter. **WHAT TO EXPECT** This isn't a fitness event with casual chitchat. It's a walking think tank where we explore life's big questions together, beyond small talk. *If you're looking for light banter or a standard networking event, this probably isn't the right fit.* But if you crave depth, genuine connection, and conversations that make you feel alive? You'll love it here. **FAQ** * Wear casual athletic attire and sneakers. It's a long walk! * We have multiple first-timers at each event. We work hard to create a welcoming, inclusive, clique-free space. * We welcome people of **all** ages, backgrounds, and industries who align with the [intention](https://www.theboardwalks.com/ground-rules) of this space. * Rain or shine, we've been out here nearly every week since July 2022. If the event is cancelled, we'll let you know. * Dogs, babies in strollers, parents, and friends are welcome — please text/email them the event link so they can RSVP and prepare a topic! **LOGISTICS** * If you'll arrive over 10 minutes late, we suggest skipping the event. It's hard to find us once we start walking, and your host can't answer messages during the event. * This walk is designed for everyone to *move together at the same steady pace* (about 20 min/mile). This format works best when the whole group moves in unison. If you have mobility limitations, we kindly encourage you to find an event better suited to your needs. * Read our [Orientation Guide](https://www.theboardwalks.com/orientation) for full details. * If you enjoy the event, send **[this](http://www.theboardwalks.com/)** to a friend or sign up for our **[newsletter](https://theboardwalks.beehiiv.com/)**. We're in multiple cities with more on the way. 🤠👋 **IF YOU WANT TO GO DEEPER...** [The Board](https://stan.store/ellebeecher/p/the-board) is the next step: a high-trust collective for renaissance people devoted to creating, connecting, and building lives that light us up. * This is a global HQ for people who crave big talk, deep connection, and dream collaborations with people across industries. If the walks feel like a spark... The Board is the fire. Apply [here](https://stan.store/ellebeecher/p/the-board).
