PCE Philosophic Conversation in English
PCE - "Philosophic Conversation in English" is a discussion event in English language which focuses on psychology, philosophy, self-consciousness and self-realization. The conversation is based on inclusive discussion rules. We will meet at at a restaurant where we will sit in the outdoor area.
At the beginning we will choose the two topics to discuss. Everybody can suggest a topic. Afterwards we will vote what topics to discuss. The person who suggests a winning topic will start the discussion by explaining his/her idea.
Afterwards everybody gets his/her chance to make a statement. But you can also decide to remain silent and only listen, if you prefer that. We have a time limit for statements, so that everybody has enough time to speak. It is not allowed to interrupt somebody who is speaking. After a statement everybody can ask a question and the speaker will answer.
After the first part there will be a 15 minutes break before we start the second part.
Everybody is welcome to our event: We are interested in your thoughts and opinions! It is no problem if you arrive late and you can also leave whenever you want.
Please don't bring pets to this event because the room is usually very crowded. Please make sure to register for the event to secure your seat!

"living immutable: painless Java Records" + "Zero-Deps Java AI Business Agents"
Agenda:
18:00 Doors open
18:20 welcome - doors closing
18:30 "living immutable: working with Java Records the painless way" - Georgios Angelopoulos
\~ 19:00/19:15 break/networking
\~ 19:30/19:45 Zero-Dependency **Java 25+ AI Business Agents**: Running locally with zsmith and LightMetal - Adam Bien
**living immutable: working with Java Records the painless way**
Java Records are great for immutability, but updating deeply nested structures usually means dealing with a headache of nested constructors and endless *.withX()* chains.
This talk covers how to skip the boilerplate using Telescope, a lightweight Java library designed for painless deep updates. We will dive into:
* The ergonomic pain points of nested Java Records.
* Using Telescope's fluent DSL for surgical, zero-boilerplate updates
* Applying these same clean immutability patterns to legacy POJOs.
**About Georgios Angelopoulos**
I am a Lead Developer at Prewave with a background in Electrical and Computer Engineering. My experience and interests cover the entire computing spectrum, solving problems at every layer of the stack.
**Zero-Dependency Java 25+ Business Agents: Running locally with zsmith and LightMetal**
Modern Java provides all the functionality required for local LLM inference and agent orchestration, eliminating the need for external dependencies.
LightMetal directly binds Llama.cpp from Java using the **Foreign Function and Memory API (FFM)**, eliminating the need for JNI or native wrappers. It runs open models such as **Mistral, Gemma, and Llama** on your machine.
Zsmith is built on LightMetal and uses the Boundary-Control-Entity (BCE) model to structure agents. It loads tools and skills as ServiceLoader plugins and runs tool calls and streaming on Virtual Threads. Local inference and remote models work with the same agent code over the JDK's HttpClient.
Topics:
\- One\-line installation\, no build tools\, no package managers
\- FFM in practice: calling native libraries without JNI
\- Running Mistral\, Gemma and Llama locally in pure Java
\- ServiceLoader as a plugin mechanism for tools and skills
\- BCE applied to AI agents
\- Virtual Threads for streaming\, tool calls and parallel inference
\- Switching between local and remote models without changing the agent
\- Plain JDK: HttpClient\, records\, sealed types and pattern matching
\- Packaging agents as single\-file Java applications
Everything is demonstrated live with code. Your questions are highly welcome — the more, the better!

Science and Philosophy Discussion Table
This is a group for meeting new people, eating brunch, and having discussions about science, life, philosophy, politics, and people.
Anybody is free to join, and we charge no fees.
This discussion group aims to have the absolute minimal level of structure necessary to ensure the conversation remains engaging to the majority of people present. In particular, we \*don't\* have fixed order of speaking or timed statements.
So far, the balance we've struck is enforcing hand raising when conversation gets intense in order to minimize interruption, and to give the chair (me!) the power to occasionally call a snap election on the conversation topic.
The Psychology and Personal Growth Circle: Thinking, Fast and Slow
Welcome to our cozy **The Psychology and Personal Growth Circle** which is part of the Social Book Club!
We will meet to discuss the book “**Thinking, Fast and Slow**" (499 pages) written by Daniel Kahneman.
The idea is to connect with like minded readers that love to grow and get to know themselves better through reading and especially applying knowledge from books.
We meet up once a month and talk about our progress applying knowledge from a certain book and our experience.
The event will take place at the volunteer organisation **MUT**.
It is an organisation to supports humans, animals and the environment especially in Vienna.
MUT or the Social Book Club look forward to some donation to cover the cost of this event.
If you would like to help, please bring some cash with you.
Book Description:
In the highly anticipated *Thinking, Fast and Slow*, Kahneman takes us on a groundbreaking tour of the mind and explains the two systems that drive the way we think. System 1 is fast, intuitive, and emotional; System 2 is slower, more deliberative, and more logical.
Kahneman exposes the extraordinary capabilities—and also the faults and biases—of fast thinking, and reveals the pervasive influence of intuitive impressions on our thoughts and behavior. The impact of loss aversion and overconfidence on corporate strategies, the difficulties of predicting what will make us happy in the future, the challenges of properly framing risks at work and at home, the profound effect of cognitive biases on everything from playing the stock market to planning the next vacation—each of these can be understood only by knowing how the two systems work together to shape our judgments and decisions.
If anyone would like to hang out **after** the book club discussion, you’re more than welcome to join us! We’ll be having a picnic and just relaxing afterward.
All the best

### Was wir an diesem Abend ganz nebenbei lernen:
\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-
What if we could train essential skills for everyday life and our careers while simply laughing together and having a great time?
At this game night, we use the full spectrum of modern games for what they truly are at their core: an absolutely stress-free laboratory for social competence, strategic thinking, and genuine togetherness. In the spirit of "Learning for Fun," we skip the dry theory completely and dive straight into the shared experience!
We have the perfect playful challenge for every taste – and each one trains very specific skills:
* **Worker Placement Games (Strategy & Resource Management):** Here you learn to manage scarce resources optimally, plan long-term, and flexibly adapt your strategy when another player snatches a valuable spot from you. This is applied project management in miniature!
* **Deduction Games (Logic & Analytical Thinking):** These formats are all about razor-sharp logic and systematically combining facts. You learn to connect scattered pieces of information in a structured way, ask the right questions, and uncover secrets through a precise process of elimination.
* **Social Deduction Games (Psychology & Reading People):** Here, secret identities and the subtle game of truth take center stage. You sharpen your perception, learn to read between the lines, interpret body language, and purposefully use your own power of persuasion when bluffing and arguing.
* **Cooperative Games (Teamwork & Empathy):** In these team highlights, we only win or lose together. Here you train trust, intense coordination with one another, and the ability to adapt completely to the perspective and mindset of your fellow players.
### What we learn along the way:
* **Communication & Flexibility:** Whether cooperation or competition – we train our way of expression, the perception of our counterpart, and solving complex problems together.
* **Resilience & Emotional Strength:** Dealing playfully with tricky situations and team challenges trains our emotional intelligence and composure for real life.
Feel free to bring your own favorites from these categories. Whether you want to try out new tactics, sharpen your logic, or just meet great new people: you've come to the right place!

Data & Analytics Wednesday - Learning from Everyday Data
**Practical Curiosity: Learning from Everyday Data**
How do we actually get better at utilizing our day-to-day data? Fancy dashboards and complex models might look nice and draw attention, but that’s not where most of us spend our time. In fact those shiny outputs frequently sit unused, while the real insights are drawn from the analyst’s daily practice.
Sometimes it’s as simple and as powerful as noticing that a segment is shrinking, a channel is underused, or certain links keep getting all the clicks. There’s many different places that the spark of insight can come from, but you have to keep your head in the data and know where to look.
In this session, we’ll explore real-world examples of how segmentation, testing, and click behavior can uncover practical digital marketing opportunities. You’ll leave with inspiration for your own use cases, along with a few simple ways to ask better questions, spot meaningful patterns, and make smarter decisions without overcomplicating it.
**About Our Speaker:**
[Elaine Armbruster](https://www.linkedin.com/in/elainearmbruster/) is a Director of Digital Experience at the [American Diabetes Association](https://diabetes.org/), where she focuses on using data and insights to create smarter, more effective digital experiences. A lifelong Columbus resident, she has built her career in email marketing and the broader digital user journey, and is finding she most enjoys working in the messy middle where systems, data, and big ideas don’t quite line up yet.

Stop Guessing: How to Measure and Improve LLM Outputs
Most people use LLMs by feel: ask a question, read the answer, decide whether it “seems good,” and move on.
That works for casual use. It does not work when you are building software, automating workflows, writing important documents, or relying on AI for anything that needs to be repeatable.
In this talk, we’ll look at how to improve and evaluate the inputs and outputs of LLMs using practical measurement techniques. We’ll cover how prompt changes affect results, how to compare outputs, how to build simple evaluation sets, and how math-based methods like similarity scoring can help you move beyond guesswork.
This will be beginner-friendly, so even if you don't know anything about AI, you should get something out of it. However, this will be a little more technical than our intro talks. You do not need to be an AI researcher, but programmers and technically curious attendees will get a lot out of it.
We’ll cover:
* Why “it looks good” is not enough
* How to improve prompts by changing the input, context, and constraints
* How to compare LLM outputs more systematically
* Basic evaluation techniques for accuracy, consistency, and usefulness
* How embeddings, cosine similarity, and scoring can help evaluate results
* Where automated evaluation works — and where humans still need to stay in the loop
By the end, you’ll have a practical mental model for treating LLMs less like magic and more like systems you can test, measure, and improve.
LOGISTICS AND PARKING:
The talk starts at 7:00 PM. The first half hour is reserved for everyone to get set up and mingle. Free pizza and drinks!
The cheapest parking option is to find street parking, which will only cost you a few bucks. Otherwise, park in the nearby veteran's museum lot for $8. It's highly recommended you avoid the nearby $15 garage parking.
COUNT RMH Housewarmer Volunteering (Ronald McDonald House)
Some trained COUNT volunteers work together once a month at RMH (http://www.rmhc-centralohio.org/volunteer.php) as Housewarmers (usually on the 1st Sunday from 1 – 5 PM). Some schedule other shifts at their convenience. You may try this out with less fuss by following a "Fast track" or go through the normal process.
Fast track
• Arrange a time to shadow a COUNT volunteer. Call Dave Nohle at 614-268-9558 (cell).
• Show up and try it out.
• Complete application, etc. later.
Normal process
• Complete an online application (http://rmhc-centralohio.org/volunteer/).
• Attend orientation in advance.
• At orientation you will complete forms agreeing to keep family/patient info private and allowing a background check and tour the facility.
• Complete one training shift. Daily shifts are: morning 9 AM - 1 PM, afternoon 1 - 5 PM and evening 5 - 9 PM.
• Schedule shifts online using the on the RMH scheduling system (http://www.volgistics.com/ex/portal.dll/?FROM=32895).
The Ronald McDonald House (RMH) provides housing and meals for families with sick children. The Columbus RMH is the largest in the world with 137 rooms. COUNT has been volunteering there since May 2014.
Housewarmers work with RMH guests to provide a home-like environment - greet, assist with family needs, answer phones, give tours, assist with checkin/checkout, prepare guest rooms after checkout, clean facility, laundry, restock supplies and staff the front desk. RMH Housewarmers volunteer at least one four-hour shift a month. All Housewarmers must complete an application and agree to a background check before they can be full fledged volunteers.
