June book selection: The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy
"The God of Small Things" is the 1997 debut novel written by Indian author Arundhati Roy, winning her the Booker Prize the same year. The novel's events are set against the backdrop of social discrimination and political upheaval in 1960s Kerala, with casteism and British colonialism in India being central themes.
Upon its publication the book received stellar reviews in major American and Canadian newspapers; critical response in the United Kingdom was less positive. A 1996 Booker Prize judge called the novel "execrable". In India, the book was criticised especially for its unrestrained description of sexuality. The then-Chief Minister of Roy's home state Kerala voiced criticism about the book's depiction of women and sex, and Roy had to answer charges of obscenity.
By 2019, the Brits had revised their opinion. The Daily Telegraph ranked "The God of Small Things" as one of the 10 all-time greatest Asian novels, BBC News named it one of the 100 most influential novels, and the Independent listed it as one of the 12 best Indian novels.
*Goodreads summary*
The year is 1969. In the state of Kerala, on the southernmost tip of India, a skyblue Plymouth with chrome tailfins is stranded on the highway amid a Marxist workers' demonstration. Inside the car sit two-egg twins Rahel and Esthappen, and so begins their tale. . . .
Armed only with the invincible innocence of children, they fashion a childhood for themselves in the shade of the wreck that is their family—their lonely, lovely mother, Ammu (who loves by night the man her children love by day), their blind grandmother, Mammachi (who plays Handel on her violin), their beloved uncle Chacko (Rhodes scholar, pickle baron, radical Marxist, bottom-pincher), their enemy, Baby Kochamma (ex-nun and incumbent grandaunt), and the ghost of an imperial entomologist's moth (with unusually dense dorsal tufts).
When their English cousin, Sophie Mol, and her mother, Margaret Kochamma, arrive on a Christmas visit, Esthappen and Rahel learn that Things Can Change in a Day. That lives can twist into new, ugly shapes, even cease forever, beside their river "graygreen." With fish in it. With the sky and trees in it. And at night, the broken yellow moon in it.
The brilliantly plotted story uncoils with an agonizing sense of foreboding and inevitability. Yet nothing prepares you for what lies at the heart of it.
The God of Small Things takes on the Big Themes—Love. Madness. Hope. Infinite Joy. Here is a writer who dares to break the rules. To dislocate received rhythms and create the language she requires, a language that is at once classical and unprecedented. Arundhati Roy has given us a book that is anchored to anguish, but fueled by wit and magic.
1. Kuckuckslauf in Kastel-Staadt (10-12km)
**Update:**
If you find this event just now, everything below was posted when the online registration to the event "Kuckucklauf" on "Chiplauf.de" was still possible.
The registration has closed end of Monday!
You can still sign up for this MeetUp event, come for the hike, and enjoy the beverages and food at the town festival after.
Please refer to the carpool section below, preferred meeting point is on Glacis for carpooling.
In case you come directly, starting point is here: [Kastel-Staadt Parking](https://maps.app.goo.gl/jfw7GiBrjK5zaW5Y6)
We will start once everyone has arrived, estimated between 9:15 and 9:30
**Original description:**
Hello Friends!
This time, we're going to do a modified "Traumschleife Kasteler Felsenpfad" trail in Germany.
"Traumschleife" (Dream Loop) is a category of beautiful paths in Germany, Saar-Hunsrück area, some of them cross-border between Germany and Luxembourg 🥾🥾
The organization [Chiplauf](https://www.chiplauf.de/) promotes running events in the greater "BE-DE-LUX" region between Gerolstein, Hermeskeil, and Luxembourg.
There are 19 events between June and November, most of which are purely for running, from a short 5km trail, or 1000m for toddlers, up to an ultra marathon of 111km. Each of the events offers different disciplines and distances.
I haven't checked all of them, but besides the "Äischdall-Trail" in August (Eischen, Luxembourg), this one is the only one I've seen where hiking is also possible.
A colleague of mine lives in Kastel-Staadt, the town that is hosting this "Kuckuckslauf" (cuckoo trail) for the first time.
His family and friends are busy with printing, sowing, and other preparations. He told me about this, and I like the opportunity to do something abroad and to support this initiative.
It seems to me a little bit like the FLMP hikes, where the umbrella organization is promoting it, and each local hiking club in the hosting town or villages is responsible for the details and the funding.
**Details (please read carefully):**
There is a fee of 15 Euro, for which you will get a small bag/sack with snacks, a start number, and drinks at a "pit stop" along the trail.
The surplus of the event, which a local non-profit organization financially governs, will go to a charity.
There will be refreshments along the trail, and at the end, there is a "Volksfest" with food, drinks, and games for kids.
Food includes a "Schwenker", the regional traditional barbecue with steaks and sausages.
While the path they have planned, deviating from the original "Traumschleife" a bit, is 10km, I have planned a short detour up to the "Altfels", a natural monument and supposedly a viewpoint.
If it's too hot, we can skip that totally, or some of you can do a shortcut and wait 20-30 mins for the rest of the group at the next corner in the shade.
You can sign up here: [Kuckuckslauf Registration](https://www.chiplauf.de/fr/events/1-kuckuckslauf-in-kastel-staadt/discipline)
You can switch the language between German, English, and French, but they don't translate everything, make sure you sign up for the "10km Wanderung"
***At this point, the deadline is the 24th, but my colleague just told me that they plan to move it to the 22nd.***
I have signed up today and put "Yet Another Hiking Group in Luxembourg" as the club name. Let me know whether it now shows up in the drop-down list when you register.
It would be cool to see our group name there multiple times, but the registration is voluntary (see "freeloader" section below)
**Payment:**
Payment is possible via bank transfer, credit card, Klarna, even a Belgian money app, sadly no Payconiq ;(
If you have no credit card and don't want to bother with the payment, you can message me *"please register me"* and send me 15 EUR via PayPal or Payconiq.
Paypal: [Paypal payment link](https://eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.paypal.com%2Fpool%2F9qdHwPrvIx%3Fsr%3Daccr&data=05%7C02%7Cjens.osterloh%40ses.com%7C8fdb1810e6074e33470b08decef27b53%7C88281ca8e5254a8db965480a7ac2b970%7C0%7C0%7C639175738014325246%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=92a7yAkNi0DyJrzX0G2YrIUIgQYLzZ1V898RVdPzWik%3D&reserved=0)
Payconiq: [Payconiq payment link](https://payconiq.com/payme/1/md2vc5bo2mkb)
I still encourage everyone to register himself, but if I can help, let me know.
**Attention:** If you struggle with the online payment while actively trying yourself and going back and forth, you can end up in a situation where you have successfully registered without actually paying.
They will still have your information, and your registration is "unpaid". In the confirmation e-mail, you will find the payment link and bank information.
**Meeting Point:**
This time we will do "full carpool" and I suggest that most of us meet on Glacis shortly after 8 am.
Departure time around 8:20, after mixing the carpool and having at least 3-4 people per car.
If you come from a completely different location and Luxembourg City would be a big detour, please use the carpool app and organize a local carpool.
We will meet near the parking lot in Kasteel, you can park there or all along the road to the cemetery.
Note: There will be lots of people, please plan at least 10 minutes for finding alternate parking and walking to the starting point: [Google-Maps: Parking Kastel-Staadt](https://maps.app.goo.gl/r4RpL4F3MRQoCwjLA)
**Carpool:**
I suggest that "the usual suspects" coming from the south are organizing a carpool from Bettembourg, e.g. meeting at [Parking Gare Bettembourg](https://maps.app.goo.gl/XGwS1WWuwUUVoaRz6)
You can then take the highway and cross at Schengen/Perl.
Main carpool will meet on the [Glacis](https://maps.app.goo.gl/MWhSdB1QAg7mmeX56), near "Hitch", like in the good old times. You can get there via bus or tram, or you can take your car and leave it there.
(This was the pre-covid mode: 20 people came to Glacis with 16 cars, and we left 12 cars there, everyone got a seat, and we were maximum eco-friendly :)
From the city, we will pass through Remich, and we can re-shuffle the carpool if too many people come alone in a car otherwise.
Please look for or announce your departure at the [Remich free parking](https://maps.app.goo.gl/ouKRcqf8GxRMR9Uz5)
https://groupcarpool.com/t/wev38a
**Public Transport:**
\*canceled\*
**Freeloaders:**
If you don't want to pay the registration fee, you can still attend the hike.
Of course, you will not get the goodies, medal, or participation certificate, and you are not eligible for the refreshments at the pit stop.
Unlike at the Diekirch walk, you will probably not get very much frowned upon, at least not by me.
But since the surplus of the event will be for a charity, a small donation at the end will be very welcome!
**Please note:**
It's tick season. Be careful, use some repellent product, and check yourself after the hike.
As usual, the hike is at your own risk, and please take enough water for yourself.
Looking forward to hiking with you!
Jens
**PS: If the weather forecast is correct, it will be over 30 degrees for the next 10 days. Please bring LOTS of water for yourself!**

Free In-Person Meeting: Healing from Trauma and Past Betrayals
This is a free, in person meeting.
Burdened by a stressful relationship? Unhealthy relationships can trigger feelings of anger, despair or self-doubt. They can create dwindling spirals of fights and seeking to make-up, or trying to “pin the blame” on someone or something. If you don’t find the RIGHT reasons, or select the correct sources of the problem, the problem can just get worse and worse.
Whether in love or personal ties, with friends or at work, our life really IS affected by the quality of our relationships. Good ones can promote pleasure and survival while less optimum ones can lead to annoyance, anger, self-doubt, stress, or even affect our health and ability to survive well.
Whether you are suffering from a divorce, or a painful break-up, don’t know who to trust (or who to CHOOSE) as a partner, friend, boss or employee - the anxiety of relationship troubles can really make a mess of things. Maybe you’ve suffered a betrayal, or are dealing with hostility or criticalness or invalidation. Dwindling relationships can involve destructive behavior, where we hurt those we love, or start succumbing to self-destructive thoughts, attitudes or behaviors that spiral out of control and affect much more than our immediate relationship.
Past losses in love or life can affect how we act or react to new people and situations and hold us back from even starting to create new, possibly great relationships! How can one get back onto a saner course of action?
Come to our Meetup, where we can introduce you to some of the knowledge, tools and techniques of the breakthroughs in the field of the mind that we can apply to this ever important area of life: human relationships!
Break free from self imposed limitations
Here we will discuss:
• How to “erase” the trauma of past hurts and betrayals so that one isn’t always repeating past mistakes.
• Why and how do the negative emotions of others affect you?
• Why is my partner withdrawing and what can I do about it?
• Why do we sometimes feel compelled to hurt the ones we love?
• Fights & arguments - what's really behind them?
• What underlies “corrosive criticism” or the need to invalidate self or others?
• How one can stably change one’s outlook on life so they can affect positive change?
• Where do compulsive destructive behaviors come from and what can be done about them?
• How to form closer bonds & keep growing the relationships with the people you care about?
• How to enhance one’s own ability to survive and create positive healthy relationships whether in love, family & friendships or in work, business or one’s career?
Relationships can be hard and life itself IS challenging. Why not arm yourself with the knowledge and breakthroughs that have been made about the mind, mental reactions & interpersonal relationships, so that one has better awareness and control over themselves and life in general.
Learn where painful experiences are “stored” and how they can unknowingly affect us. You will also find out how one can “erase” those past painful experiences so that one is free to move forward without being tripped up by the past. Learn too, about what can lead some people to become “toxic” personalities and how to identify those traits in others so you won’t be tripped up trusting the wrong person.
Our free Meet-ups occur in a safe environment where one can learn, without fear of judgment or criticism, and without the recommendation of harmful mental techniques or therapies, just how YOU can get yourself onto a happier & more successful path: in love & in life.
We look forward to having you join us!

Evolve is all about creating an Authentic Community, Deeper Connections, and Confident Growth. We are a group of entrepreneurial women who connect personally and professionally. We welcome every guest to experience our authentic community with no cliques and no judgment. Come as you are! There's a seat waiting for you.
Elevate is an action-oriented connection experience designed to help women entrepreneurs move beyond surface-level networking and into meaningful growth, collaboration, and courageous action. Each session centers around a focused business or personal development topic, followed by intentional breakout discussions that encourage deeper conversations, real relationship-building, and practical next steps.
Unlike traditional networking events, Elevate is designed to create momentum. Women are encouraged not only to share ideas, but to actively support one another through accountability, collaboration, brainstorming, and action-based growth. Every meeting is an opportunity to build authentic connections, gain fresh perspective, and leave with a clear action step to implement before the next session.
This is a space where women rise together — not through competition or hustle culture, but through encouragement, courage, consistency, and intentional community.
