Even though each village had its own distinct history and characteristics, the two were miles apart in their development. Named for the wild roses that littered the hills above the homestead of William Jarvis and his wife Mary, Rosedale is an iconic Toronto district with elegant houses, manicured lawns, and a fascinating history! Yorkville to the southwest is tied in with the history of Rosedale, but barely, and runs parallel to the development of both the neighbourhood and the surrounding area. With the Yorkville Brick Works, and the tidy ravine to the east it was a picturesque part of Toronto that remained pretty much rural into the late 19th century. On this walking tour we explore both districts, and how Rosedale emerged as an affluent Toronto suburb, but all was not good, as the district approached the 1930s depression. With a large proportion of rooming houses, Rosedale slipped in influence and affluence. This walking tour is for all walking levels and fitness skills. Please dress for the season and bring water. A fun way to compare wines from two different countries at a time. House Wine is squaring off two countries' wines against each other each Thursday in March.
