RESCHEDULED: PCB Happy Hour on the Seine
**THIS EVENT HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED TO THURSDAY, MAY 21**
Come on out for an opportunity to socialize off the bikes and see if we can recognize each other out of our kits and get a free instant portrait that other people will pay for... someday, hopefully. I plan to bring my 1955 Graflex Pacemaker Speed Graphic, a 4x5 camera (older than me) affixed with a film back so I can shoot instant film made by Fuji (Instax wide).
We will meet where we did last August at **[Scilicet](http://www.scilicet.fr/)**, the outdoor pub at 134 Voie George Pompidou, which is on the quai on the right bank across from Ile de la Cité just west of Pont au Change (the western-most bridge to the island). **[Google maps link](https://maps.app.goo.gl/GQzc9UYqYWtjtQhe6) [Menu link](https://scilicet.fr/la-carte/).**
Apparently, meeting friends along the Seine and bringing your own drinks is no longer allowed, as now drinks must be served by a pub. So, my idea to meet in a public space and bring our own would need to happen elsewhere. Perhaps we can discuss other possibilities for future events, such as on the steps of the Eglise Saint Etienne du Mont at [Place Sainte-Geneviève, 75005 ParisPlace Sainte-Geneviève, 75005 Paris](https://www.google.com/maps/place//data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x47e671e624cfb4ab:0x52a5c9e5c0e6ee3?sa=X&ved=1t:8290&ictx=111).
Bring better ideas with you next Thursday!

**It's 1985. Vincent, almost 13, lives in the Parisian suburbs in a middle-class family, between a distant older brother and parents in constant conflict. While he is "no longer" a child and "not yet" an adult, we will share his questions and doubts about identity, friendship, family, religion, desire, and first stirrings of love.**

Profs & Pints N. Virginia: A Deep Dive into the Declaration of Independence
[Profs and Pints Northern Virginia](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“A Deep Dive into the Declaration of Independence,”** on the origins and impact of America’s founding document, with Denver Brunsman, chairman of George Washington University’s history department, lecturer at Mount Vernon, and noted scholar of early American history and the American Revolution.
[Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/nv-deep-dive-into-declaration](https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/nv-deep-dive-into-declaration) .]
The celebration of our nation’s 250th anniversary will take on much deeper meaning if you take time to fully understand and appreciate the document that declared our independence from England and gave rise to the American experiment.
Learn essential lessons about the Declaration of Independence from Denver Brunsman, is an incredibly engaging speaker who has built a big following among Profs and Pints fans in and around Washington D.C.
Professor Brunsman will start by discussing the Declaration’s background, composition, and philosophical underpinnings.
You’ll learn how by 1776 American colonists had resisted British policies for thirteen years and endured open warfare with Britain for more than a year. We’ll look at how this imperial crisis influenced the Declaration’s primary author, Thomas Jefferson, as well as the larger Declaration Committee and the Second Continental Congress.
In recent years, scholars have focused particularly on the previously underappreciated grievance section of the Declaration. Rather than simply being an afterthought to the more famous preamble (“all men are created equal”), the grievances followed a logical order that carefully presented the case against King George III and the British Empire for a “candid world” to consider. Professor Brunsman will fill you in on how that list of grievances rallied Americans and other nations to the cause.
A document both timeless and of its time, the Declaration quickly soared beyond its humble origins as a committee report to become synonymous with American independence and an inspiration for rebellion elsewhere. Dr. Brunsman will consider the place of the Declaration in American life, from the eighteenth century to today, and how the document helped shape much of American history while influencing “the course of human events” throughout the world.
The talk will close with customary toasts from the American revolutionary era. Huzzah! Huzzah! Huzzah! (Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. The talk starts 30 minutes later.)

Profs & Pints Northern Virginia: Popes and Politics
[Profs and Pints Northern Virginia](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“Popes and Politics,”** on the history of clashes between pontiffs and world leaders, with Vanessa Corcoran, medieval historian at Georgetown University and scholar of the history of the Roman Catholic church.
[Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/northern-virginia-popes-politics](https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/northern-virginia-popes-politics) .]
President Trump recently shocked many by unleashing personal attacks on Pope Leo XIV, the first American-born pope, in a post on the Truth Social platform. Trump has been widely criticized by religious leaders for these remarks, made in response to the pontiff’s advocacy of peace with the U.S and Israel at war with Iran, and for his separate posts of AI-generated images depicting himself as a pope and as Jesus. For his part, Pope Leo has told journalists, “I am not afraid of the Trump administration,” and has found himself at the center of a heated debate over the proper role of any pope when it comes to commenting on global politics.
As unsettling as such developments might be to Roman Catholics, they’re hardly unprecedented. Disagreements between popes and world leaders go back to the Middle Ages, and have played a significant role in shaping the Church and its role in the world.
Explore the long history of popes’ conflicts with politicians with Vanessa Corcoran, a historian of the Roman Catholic Church who previously has given excellent talks on papal conclaves and the evolution of nativity scenes.
She’ll discuss fascinating developments such as the fourteenth century Avignon Papacy, when Philip IV of France got the upper hand in a feud with the Church by pressuring a papal conclave to select a French pope and then getting the church’s leadership relocated from Rome to Avignon for nearly 70 years.
In drawing parallels between recent events and medieval attacks on the Church’s authority she’ll describe how today’s anti-Church memes echo the anti-pope and anti-Catholic images that Martin Luther disseminated in large numbers with the help of woodcut printing.
We’ll look at tensions between past presidents and past popes over not just wars, but issues such as abortion, stem-cell research, and abortion access. The talk will leave you with a deeper appreciation of the inherent tensions between politics and matters of faith. (Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. The talk starts 30 minutes later.)
