🗣️ Arabic Practice Circle: Social & Structured Session
A regular meetup for those committed to practising and improving their Arabic. It is designed for those who know the very basics and want a structured opportunity to practise reading, listening, speaking, and building confidence. If you're still learning the very basics but want some motivation to keep going, you're very welcome to join. Note: This is a practice group facilitated by a native speaker - not a formal teacher or taught class, and not a Quran teaching session. 📚 SESSION FORMAT: ⏱️ 30 mins Intro & Social: We'll go around and introduce ourselves in Arabic. Feel free to prepare 2-3 sentences beforehand if you don't like being put on the spot! 🗣️ 60 mins Structured Practice: A focused session practising together with guidance : ◾ Taking turns reading passages aloud ◾ Listening to excerpts from an audiobook ◾ Working together to translate and understand the text 💬 Continued Socialising: Feel free to stick around afterwards for more informal chat and connection. ✊ Note: Active Muslims is equally about focusing on the actual activity, in this case, it is a practice session requiring mental engagement and active participation (and not just a social), therefore it is advised to approach and attend these events with that mindset, intention and purpose. 📍 LOCATION: Barbican ⌚ MEET: By the cafe G Level (Benugo) ⏱️ TIME: Meet from **11:00am** for intros and socialising. The practice session starts promptly at **11:30am** insha'Allah. 🎒 What to bring: 📚 Any Arabic texts you would like to read 🎧 Headphones (optional, if you prefer listening privately) ➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖ If you can no longer attend, please update your RSVP to free up your spot for someone on the waiting list. ➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖ 🌐 **[@Active.Muslims](https://www.instagram.com/active.muslims)** *(Follow for latest events updates)*

Two Strong Wings: Advancing the Equality of Women & Men
The equality of women and men has shaped conversations about justice, opportunity, and human dignity across cultures and generations. In this discussion, we’ll explore what equality means in practice—socially, culturally, and personally. How have ideas about equality evolved over time? What progress has been made, and what challenges remain? How do we create communities where everyone’s contributions and voices are valued? Join us for an open and respectful conversation where participants can share perspectives, experiences, and insights. Whether you come to speak or simply to listen, all thoughtful voices are welcome. **All are welcome.**
Alternate Saturday: Roosevelt Island to Chain Bridge along PHT (and back!)
Alternate Saturday: Roosevelt Island to Chain Bridge along PHT (and back!)
Hello Adventurous Hikers!!! Welcome to another alternate Saturday hike at 8:30 AM! This hike is planned for the coming Saturday (sorry for the short notice) and **will NOT be at Great Falls Park.** We will meet at the Roosevelt Island parking lot at the end nearest the entrance. Note that this lot is accessible ONLY from the northbound George Washington Parkway. If you will be coming from Virginia on I-66, you will have to cross the Roosevelt bridge, exit onto Independance Ave, make a quick U-turn and re-cross the bridge back to Virginia to access the NB GW. The parking lot entrance comes up almost immediately on the right once you enter the parkway. **Note that the start time is 8:30 to ensure a parking spot.** The hike will be from the parking lot north along the river on the Potomac Heritage trail to Chain Bridge - about 9 miles roundtrip. There are a couple of stream crossings that are not difficult and one rock scramble (with "handrail" - see photo). If anyone has enough energy left, we can then hike onto and around Roosevelt Island if you have never done so. That trail is flat and a lot of it is on a boardwalk. If anyone from Herndon, Reston, or Sterling wants to carpool with me, I can accomodate 3 hikers! Please ask me directly if you have any questions. Hike may be cancelled if there is not sufficiant interest so sign up soon! Thanks Dick
Healing Racism
Healing Racism
Today's Meaningful Conversation explores the role of spirituality in eradicating and healing from the spiritual disease of racism. We will begin our exploration of this topic with a selection of passages from the Bahá’í Writings, which will help us consider the following questions: * How does a spiritual outlook on racism help us better understand and address this vital issue? * What changes in mind and heart will offer an effective antidote to racism? * How can each of us contribute to true and lasting healing and transformation? *“If in this day a soul shall act according to the precepts and the counsels of God, he will serve as a divine physician to mankind…”*

In-Person Buddhist Meditation and Psychology Group
In-Person Buddhist Meditation and Psychology Group
This group is for anyone who wants to explore Buddhist meditation in a relaxed and supportive setting. Each session includes a short meditation, a simple teaching from Buddhist psychology, and an open discussion about how these ideas show up in everyday life. While our foundation is Buddhist practice, we love weaving in wisdom from other traditions whenever it helps us grow, find peace, and support each other. Members of our community come from many different backgrounds, and you do not need to consider yourself a Buddhist to attend. All are welcome. The session runs from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m., with doors open from 6:30 to 9:00. Come early or stay after if you’d like to enjoy some quiet reflection or casual conversation with the community. On the first Wednesday of each month, we share a potluck meal. Bring a dish if you’d like, but the most important thing you can bring is yourself. We look forward to seeing you!
Profs & Pints DC: Understanding U.S.-Iran Relations
Profs & Pints DC: Understanding U.S.-Iran Relations
[Profs and Pints DC](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“Understanding U.S.-Iran Relations,”** on the origins and future of a longstanding conflict, with Vali Nasr, professor of international affairs and Middle East Studies at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, co-director of the SAIS Rethinking Iran Initiative, and author of several books on Iran and the Middle East. [Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/dc-understanding-us-iran](https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/dc-understanding-us-iran) .] Iran has represented a foreign-policy challenge for the United States for nearly 50 years, with relations between the U.S. and that nation growing more tense and sporadically violent during the first year of President Trump’s second term. Gain an understanding of what has driven the conflict, as well as what the future holds for Iran and its rivalry with the United States, with Professor Vali Nar, a leading expert who has advised senior American policymakers and world leaders on the region and whose many books on it include *Democracy in Iran: History and the Quest for Liberty, Islamic Leviathan: Islam and the Making of State Power*, and the co-authored *How Sanctions Work: Iran and the Impact of Economic Warfare.* He’ll start by taking us back to Iran’s 1979 Islamic revolution, which transformed Iran into a theocracy ruled by ayatollahs who cast the United States as the Great Satan, an enemy to be defeated at all costs. Our nation’s leaders often have blamed religious ideology for Iran’s hostility toward the United States and Iran’s willingness to devote so much energy to confronting a nation halfway around the world. Dr. Nasr will show, however, that such an explanation is inadequate, and he’ll explain how Iran’s anti-Americanism also is rooted in its history, insecurities, anxieties, and ambitions. Professor Nasr will discuss how this anti-Americanism and our desire to contain Iran have shaped U.S.-Iran relations over four decades. You’ll learn how it has led to confrontations in Lebanon and Iraq, as well as to two decades of back and forth over Iran’s nuclear program. It also has skewed Iran’s own domestic policies, deeply impacted the histories of other nations in the region, and brought about war. We’ll consider what more to expect from this rivalry and what Iran’s future holds. (Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later.) The Arts & Community: Creativity as a Catalyst for Connection
The Arts & Community: Creativity as a Catalyst for Connection
What role do the arts play in building strong, vibrant communities? How can creativity bring people together across differences, spark dialogue, and strengthen our shared sense of belonging? Join us for an open, engaging discussion on how visual art, music, theater, literature, film, and public art contribute to community life. Whether you’re an artist, arts supporter, educator, organizer, or simply someone who values culture, this conversation is for you. We’ll explore questions such as: * How do the arts create connection across cultural, generational, and social divides? * Can creative expression help communities heal after conflict or crisis? This is a dialogue — not a lecture — designed to surface diverse perspectives and lived experiences. Expect thoughtful conversation and opportunities to imagine new possibilities together. **All are welcome.**
