Labour and the Philosophy of Skill
Labour and the Philosophy of Skill
There is a rich philosophical literature on skills (e.g., chess, ballet, cricket) which focuses both on the mental states of performers (e.g., what is the phenomenology of doing something well?) and on the evaluative dimension of skill and talent (e.g., what makes skilled achievements valuable?). Within this literature, there is a glaring omission of any discussion of skills acquired and expressed in standard workplace contexts, from cafés to warehouses. This talk considers the significance of that omission, both for our philosophical conception of skill and our understanding of action in the workplace. I argue that the phenomenology of workplace skill (which should account for feelings like boredom and fear) complicates our evaluative notions about skill and talent, mainly because it elucidates and reveals as untenable certain assumptions within the philosophy of skill about the evaluative implications of phenomenological states. Zara Anwarzai https://www.sfu.ca/philosophy/people/profiles/zanwarza/ Assistant Professor Department of Philosophy Simon Fraser University **About the Speaker:** I received my PhD from Indiana University in Philosophy and in Cognitive Science in 2024. My current work focuses on the social dimension of skill and expertise. Specifically, I'm interested in how to apply traditional inquiry into the cognitive and epistemological mechanisms involved in skill (which mainly focuses on individual skilled performers) to skills acquired and expressed by pairs or groups, like team sports or ensemble performances. I have done empirical work on the evolution of human tool use and manufacture. I also have broad interests in social ontology (e.g., the nature of collectives, shared agency, and group dynamics) and the philosophy of work (e.g., the phenomenology of automaticity in the workplace, the structure of skilled action at work, the relationship between standards of expertise and capital). I am co-organizing the upcoming workshop, ["Can Social Ontology Change the World?"](https://sites.google.com/view/social-ontology-and-the-world/home) in October 2026. **\* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \*** This is a talk with audience Q&A presented by the University of Toronto's Centre for Ethics that is free to attend and open to the public. The talk will also be streamed online with live chat [here](https://youtube.com/live/nc-C7DB-e4U?feature=share). About the Centre for Ethics (http://ethics.utoronto.ca): The Centre for Ethics is an interdisciplinary centre aimed at advancing research and teaching in the field of ethics, broadly defined. The Centre seeks to bring together the theoretical and practical knowledge of diverse scholars, students, public servants and social leaders in order to increase understanding of the ethical dimensions of individual, social, and political life. In pursuit of its interdisciplinary mission, the Centre fosters lines of inquiry such as (1) foundations of ethics, which encompasses the history of ethics and core concepts in the philosophical study of ethics; (2) ethics in action, which relates theory to practice in key domains of social life, including bioethics, business ethics, and ethics in the public sphere; and (3) ethics in translation, which draws upon the rich multiculturalism of the City of Toronto and addresses the ethics of multicultural societies, ethical discourse across religious and cultural boundaries, and the ethics of international society. 2SLGBTQIA+ Board Games Extravaganza
2SLGBTQIA+ Board Games Extravaganza
Tickets are available in advance on [Eventbrite](https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/toronto-2slgbtqia-board-games-extravaganza-tickets-1983204964435?aff=ebdsoporgprofile). Hello and welcome to the 2SLGBTQIA+ Extravaganza! We are Canada's largest, and longest-running, board game event for the queer community. **About Us:** Our events are friendly meetups that aim to create a safe space for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, friends, and allies to gather and connect through gaming. Our goals for our events are to foster greater community, help build friendships, and support our community's safe space partners. **Cover:** Tickets will be pay-what-you-can, with a minimum $5. Admission supports all the resources that go into making these volunteer-organized events possible. Tickets can now be reserved in advance on [Eventbrite](https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/toronto-2slgbtqia-board-games-extravaganza-tickets-1983204964435?aff=ebdsoporgprofile). Why this change? 1. Since our new venue has limited seating, an RSVP on Meetup does not guarantee a seat. Especially if you are travelling from outside downtown, it helps gamers know they can attend the event before they arrive. 2. The lobby to the venue is much smaller than CSI. So to help folks enter the venue, having a QR code ticket is much faster than taking payments at the door. 3. With the option to PWYC, having tickets makes managing sales easier for our volunteers. 4. CSI was very generous with their pricing since many of the Extravaganza organizers were members of their organization. Since they closed, finding a new space in the city at the same price felt impossible. But! Cake Cabaret is also very generous in working with us to make a financially accessible event. In order to help them save on costs and manage their space, knowing numbers in advance with tickets is a HUGE help. **Waitlist & Walk-Ups:** If the pre-book tickets sell out on Eventbrite, we recommend joining the Eventbrite waitlist to be notified if a spot becomes available in advance. We will also start selling rush tickets for any seats that are open after 6:30 PM to walk-ups on a first-come basis, and we can accept both cash and card for payment at the door. If planning to do rush, pay-at-the-door tickets, the Cake Cabaret bar will be open with limited standing room for drinks and to social with other guests while you wait before 6:30 PM. **What to Expect:** Connecting with you and helping you find a group and a game is literally why we love putting these events on. Should you join us, both our volunteers and veteran attendees will help you feel comfortable and at home. Whether you're a seasoned gamer or new to the world of board games, this event offers something for everyone. Discover new games, challenge your friends, and make new connections with fellow board game lovers along the way. Come as a group or solo, and our friendly volunteers can help pair you with a community table, assist with introductions, and offer support with any new games by providing a teach of the rules. Extravaganza events are community first. However you identify on the 2SLGBTQIA+ spectrum, there is always a chair for you at our game tables. Friendly allies are also welcome, so long as they are respectful of the intentions of the event space. **Board Games:** From classic favourites to modern hits, we will have a wide selection of games to choose from, learn, and explore with nearly 100 games in our collection, including Coup, Codenames, Catan and many more! We also like to bring out the more crunchy games like Wingspan and Viticulture. You are also welcome to bring games from your own collection if you are interested in leading a table. **Roleplaying Games (RPGs) and Social Deception Games:** * Ever wanted to try a game like Dungeons & Dragons or Blood on the Clocktower? This is your chance! Our volunteers will be at some of the tables, ready and dedicated to leading beginner-friendly games for you to experience! * Our events feature a rotation of game experts and game systems, so there's always a new world to explore in a one-shot format. * When you first arrive, you can sign up for these activities or plan ahead in the new [Changeling Gaming Discord](https://discord.gg/Jnpa4CRFaN). **\- SCHEDULE \-** * **6 PM** // Doors open for ticket-holders, walk-in ticket sales, and sign-ups for group activities. * **6:15 - 9:30PM**// Openplay gaming tables, drink services, and food pop-up Dining & Dragons. * **8:30 PM//** Last call for the Kitchen * **9:30 - 10PM**// Wrap up games and social * **10PM** // Event ends **\- FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS \-** 1. **Venue:** NEW! With the news of CSI Annex closing, we have worked hard to find a new home. Serving sweet treats with a side of spicy performance, Cake Cabaret is Toronto’s one-of-a-kind destination for dance, burlesque, drag, and special events. The perfect place to be safely queer and game. 2. **Accessibility:** The Cake Cabaret is easily accessible. They are only a few minutes' walk west from Pape Subway Station. The venue also features elevator access with low-reach buttons and a range of seating options that are easy to move. It also has gender-neutral bathrooms with push-buttons, wide stalls and low sinks. 3. **Food & Drink:** Cake Cabaret will be hosting a bar with both alcoholic and non-alcoholic [beverage options](https://www.cakecabaret.ca/menu-1). Please make a purchase where you are able to support the venue. (Remember to please drink responsibly). Our friends at [Dining & Dragons](https://www.instagram.com/dininganddragons/) will also be joining us again to offer a food pop-up with some delicious options for purchase. The food is incredible and well worth a try! **Want to Volunteer?:** We are always looking for wonderful folks to join our friendly team of volunteers who help to make these events possible. From greeting folks at the door, to teaching games, we have a wide variety of tasks behind the scenes that need doing. Volunteers help with set-up, clean-up, and 2 hrs of the event, hosting one of the various activities. Healing Mushroom Ceremony - 'Living a Fully Expressed, Creative Life'
Healing Mushroom Ceremony - 'Living a Fully Expressed, Creative Life'
**Facilitated by Chris Dub & Marda Sperber** [FULL DETAILS HERE](https://mailchi.mp/soulguidednetwork/january-march-mushroom-ceremony-18162258?) This ceremony will support you to nurture and strengthen the new pathways you are choosing to take mentally, physically and spiritually to ensure you are a living a life that feels in rhythm with your body and soul. Receive the support you need to let go of the pain, hurt, sense of unworthiness & not enoughness, as well as the struggle we can all feel victim to at times. Immerse yourself into a space of love, forgiveness, and compassion, unlearning the ways you've been taught to judge your *very* human emotions and thoughts. ***You deserve to feel the love and support that's all around you, so you can bring forward the gifts and purpose you came here to share.*** The mind can be sticky, but when you experience genuine love it clarifies any confusion of who you truly are. ***This ceremony is an opportunity for just that: to open up to the authentic love that is innate within you, which opens up your heart, and helps you gain control of the mind.*** ### **Energies that could potentially arise in ceremony** ***Shamanic medicine ceremonies may open access to a wide range of emotional, somatic, energetic, and spiritual experiences. Each journey is unique, and all expressions are welcomed within a container of safety, consent, and compassionate presence.*** ***Energies that may arise:*** * Emotional release such as grief, joy, anger, relief, or deep peace * Memories or imprints from early life, ancestral lineages, or collective experiences * Somatic sensations including trembling, heat, cold, expansion, or energy moving through the body * Kundalini life-force activation, energetic attunements, and realignment * Encounters with inner archetypes, sacred geometry, spirit guides, animal allies, or symbolic imagery * Awareness of repetitive patterns or subconscious conditioning * Messages from past loved ones or benevolent guiding energies * States of expanded awareness, unity, stillness, or heightened intuition * Heart opening, deep surrender, electromagnetic field expansion, and embodied presence *All energies arise only as each participant is ready to meet them and are supported within a regulated, grounded, and loving field.* **Truly forgive yourself, learning to love the darker aspects that are rising to be seen and witnessed.** Cultivate a deeper love for the past versions of you, as well as others who have negatively impacted you. Gratitude is the open door to freedom, and ***when you recognize the gifts of the lessons life has given you - it becomes easier to let go of the anger, resentment, and regret***. As you unravel what has been tight within you, there is a natural alchemy that takes place within the body. Energy blocks and stagnation are unfurled, allowing you to open to more love, and the flow of vital life force energy. ***You will feel a loving space to heal and process through old traumas, ancestral karma, and become more astutely aware of ego identification, leading to more freedom, peace, and simplicity.*** **Release negative thought patterns, rewiring your nervous system for peace, harmony, and balance.** Be held in safe space so you can look at the negative thoughts and limiting beliefs that hold you back from feeling your freest, clearest, most alive and fully expressed self. Regulate your system through the awareness of breath, body (all levels - mental, emotional, physical & energetic), your 5 senses, and extrasensory perceptions. ***As you re-balance and re-align your system you will be able to see your internal experience more clearly, and also recognize why other people are the way they are, allowing you to have more compassion and forgiveness both for others and yourself.*** The more ***aware*** you are, the better ***regulated*** you are, and from that space you can become the master of your domain. You deserve the space and time to simply be, rest, rejuvenate, and feel the aliveness of living life moment by moment for YOU! **You are fully supported throughout the entire journey.** This ceremony includes the optional combination of pure MDMA along with the psilocybin mushrooms. We have found these medicines work very synergistically together, and offer an amplified level of heart opening. The pure MDMA is optional, and the dosing for both medicines will be based upon your intentions, disposition, prior experience, and current state at the time of the ceremony. After this ceremony you will feel more love for yourself and others, with a heightened sense of courage, strength, and integrity. ***You will want to make better choices, and also have the self-awareness needed to stay accountable to yourself.*** This level of love and clarity will emanate out to reach and impact all those closest to you. **This is an invitation to open up your heart, and love and forgive yourself through unconditional acceptance. To awaken to your divinity and beauty, and access your greatest gifts of self-healing and conscious creatorship.** **Ceremony Preparation & Integration** Prior to the ceremony you will receive an in-depth **plant medicine workbook** to help you prepare, questions to ask yourself and a recommended diet to support your experience. We will meet as a group before the ceremony for an **Intention Setting Call**, to connect with each other and share our intentions for the journey. You will also receive a **nervous system regulating practice** that supports in expanding internal awareness, grounding, centering and overall mindfulness.
