Join & Play! June 18
Join & Play! June 18
Our traditional "Join & Play" event is on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month. As always, it's free to come & play with us. How does it work ? • The events are open for beginner to advanced gamers. If you're new here they're the perfect gateway to discover what we do! • Those who want to host a game are asked to share in the comments below which game, & for how many players you can run your table. • For others, if you see a game you'd like to join just respond to the host in the comments below and we'll reserve a spot for that game for you. • Don't worry if you're new to boardgames or simply don't know the games being hosted this time around; you can simply show up and the event host will sort out a spot at a table for you! *But please make sure to arrive by 19h30* at the latest *so we can take the time to find you a suitable spot.* • The rules for the games will be explained by the table host before the game starts. No need to study them upfront, although several hosts post a video link to rules or background which can enhance your enjoyment of the game if you have the time to watch beforehand. This is never mandatory, however. ============================================== Games on the night: **\-\-\-\-** [Pandemic](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/30549/pandemic) **\-\-\-\-** Spot 1: Toby (host) Spot 2: Spot 3: Spot 4: **\-\-\-\-** [Sea Dragons](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/374895) **\-\-\-\-** Spot 1: Mislav (host) Spot 2: Dorian Spot 3: Spot 4: **\-\-\-\-** [Bamboo](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/351538) **\-\-\-\-** Spot 1: Tristan (host) Spot 2: k1o4n1d Spot 3: Arthur Spot 4: Francisco **\-\-\-\-** **[Cthulhu: Dark Providence ](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/404509/cthulhu-dark-providence)** **\-\-\-\-** Spot 1: Jeroen (host) Spot 2: Spot 3: Spot 4:

The Beloved by Sorogoyen
The Beloved by Sorogoyen
Let’s see this well-rated and critically acclaimed drama from Spanish director Rodrigo Sorogoyen which is a meditation on male auteurs entirely without sentimentality. Featuring Javier Bardem who gives his scariest performance since No Country For Old Men in this disquieting new film about emotional abuse. You can read a [review](https://www.theguardian.com/film/2026/may/16/the-beloved-review-javier-bardem-turns-in-a-career-scariest-performance) from Peter Bradshaw with the Guardian. The film is in Spanish with FR and NL subtitles. The film starts at 21h00 but perhaps we meet earlier at 20h00 for a drink if interested. Just let me know
Atelier210 - Science & Cocktails #44 (science + concert)
Atelier210 - Science & Cocktails #44 (science + concert)
On 18.06.2026 we visit Atelier 210 in Etterbeek for the **Science & Cocktails #46** **Andy Strominger** The idea is to explore the more alternative art scene of Brussels. We’ll kick things off with a cozy Thursday evening event: Cocktail in hand and surrounded by friends, we’ll experience a live science experiment designed to spark some philosophical thoughts — followed by a concert if you feel like sticking around a bit longer. tickets: 10€ (included a cocktail or a mocktail) to buy from the event page: [event page](https://atelier210.be/saisons/saison-25-26/science-cocktails-46/) 👨‍🔬+🍹 **Adventures with Black Holes: Past, Present and Future** A talk by Andrew Strominger Dr. Andrew Strominger received his PhD from MIT in 1981, and held a postdoctoral position at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton: What is gravity? Are black holes cosmic vacuum cleaners… or the universe’s deepest mystery boxes? Can information really disappear forever, or are black holes hiding secrets we’re just starting to decode? What did we actually see when we “photographed” a black hole and listened to spacetime ring? Are black holes a dead end for understanding the universe… or the key to its future? Followed by concert: **🎸Tokyo Witch (be)** Tokyo Witch is the solo ambient project of Losine's ilena Lacroix. From this secret faraway witchcraft treehouse lab arise some distant, dark echoes of what's way too intimate to be brought to daylight. Whispers about deep-buried sensations and experiences guide these raveled guitar and synth-based dreams marbled with nightmare.

Cinematek : The Arch
Cinematek : The Arch
**Cinematek : The Arch** 19/06 @ 18h00 Shu Shuen Tang may not be familiar to mainstream movie lovers or even cinephiles of Chinese cinema, but she was actually the first internationally recognized, award-winning independent filmmaker in Hong Kong. In addition, she also happened to be a woman at a time when the Chinese film industry was controlled by studios run by men like the Shaw Brothers. The studios would only finance commercial films … Tang’s debut film, Dong fu ren, was self-financed and shot in Hong Kong on a limited budget. It garnered four Golden Horse Awards in 1971 including Best Actress (Lisa Lu), Best Cinematography, Best Artistic achievement and, most important of all, the Special Jury Prize of Creative Innovation created and awarded to Tang for this film … In the late 1960s, after her studies at USC, Tang returned to Hong Kong to prepare for the shoot of her first feature, Dong fu ren. The film is set in 17th century China; its protagonist, Madame Tung, is a widow for whom a triumphal arch is to be erected by the king to honour her contributions to her village – the arch being an ancient Chinese symbol of honour. A conflict arises when a young officer is billeted in her house and proceeds to show romantic attachment to both Madame Tung and her daughter. Madame Tung must choose between her own desire and her duty as a widow and mother, a situation that foregrounds the cruelty of societal pressure on a woman whose voice has been taken away from her after the passing of her husband … a similar expression of female suppression had never before been seen in Chinese films … Although Tang had been immersed in the American film scene, Dong fu ren does not resemble a Hollywood production as one might expect. “The subject matter is actually very cinematic. When I finished writing the script I gave it to my professor at USC to read, and he said that it was not a filmable script, because it was about the interior feelings of a woman who had no outlet to express them, and the plot had too few characters. But that is exactly why I thought it is good material for the cinema!” Alice Shih, “Cineaction”, no. 94, 2014 [Cinematek](https://cinematek.be/2026-06-19-18-00/dong-fu-ren) [Il Cinema Ritrovato, Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna](https://ilcinemaritrovato.it/en/film/the-arch/) **For Dreamers, Coffee shots, Orezza, eau de Saint-Georges !**
Education
Education
Our last meetup before the summer break... 😀 What is the purpose of education? How should we order our priorities: acquiring knowledge, developing skills, assimilating values, ... ? To what extent should the role of education be to train students for future employment? Until which level of education should schooling be obligatory in today’s world? What should be the most important subjects comprising universal general education? Tailoring to individual differences vs moulding all students towards shared norms: what is the ideal balance? What is the ideal distribution between generalization and specialization? What qualifies a person to teach? What are the most important qualities a teacher should have? What should the roles of teacher and student be? How should teacher and student interact? How should students interact among themselves? Competition? Cooperation? Is passing exams a necessary component of learning? Is it sufficient? How can we determine the difference between "objective" education and propagandistic education? How separate or intertwined should state and school be? Does paying for one's (or one's children's) schooling compromise/prejudice that education? What, if anything, is missing or can be improved in our current systems and cultures of education? How is A.I. changing education? Is education increasingly turning into the urgent task of arming humans against A.I.? How can we best continue learning lifelong? How can we improve our learning *how* to learn? "Learning is a lifelong process; learning to learn, a lifelong task." Game Dev Working Session (Tysons-Pimmit VA Library Conference Room)
Game Dev Working Session (Tysons-Pimmit VA Library Conference Room)
**Location**: Tysons-Pimmit Regional Library (Virginia) Conference Room A game development **Working Session** involves 3 key parts: 1. Tell people what you're going to do 2. Actually do stuff 3. Show people what you did That's what we'll be doing for this meeting. We'll briefly tell each other what we're going to do, then work on our projects, then at around 5:30 wrap up to show each other what we did and chat for a bit. You don't have to stay the whole time, so feel free to drop in and out as you have time. All game development skill levels welcome. Whether you're bringing a game you're trying to ship in a month, or you're just planning on following some tutorials or trying out a new tool to improve your skills, use this time to make progress. Working sessions also train you to think about the scope of your work: pick a chunk of work that you can complete in the time that we have. That way you can end the working session with a feeling of accomplishment! **What to bring**: Laptop, Charger, maybe a power strip if you have one handy, any other game development tools you need. Try to download any software you need before the working session. There is Wifi at this location, but it may be slow if you have to download any large files.

Make games? Fund games? Dream about making games? *This one's for YOU!* IGDA DC and Loric Games are joining forces with support from Arlington County for a night where the DMV's game dev community shows up in one room. Students, hobbyists, seasoned devs, artists, investors, and the curious-but-haven't-started-yet are all invited! Show off what you're building in our open show-and-tell session (prototypes, jam games, or half-finished chaos), get live portfolio feedback from the Loric team, and meet the people who make, fund, and champion games right here in the DMV. If you'd like to be part of the show-and-tell session, submit your videos here: https://forms.gle/qP3TAtixo7NzEsYc8 So bring a build, a portfolio, a business card, or just your curiosity. This is the time to share your work, meet collaborators, and maybe even find your next opportunity. See you there! Both primary COVID-19 vaccinations are REQUIRED to enter. No vax, no entry. No exceptions. Please preferably share your vaccine status in the #vaccine channel on our Discord, either via https://vase.vdh.virginia.gov/vdhapps/f?p=545:1 or photograph of your vaccine card. If you're not comfortable sharing your status online, you can also physically bring your card. Attendees come at their own risk. In terms of setup, I have a TV for videos and general gaming, a monitor in a different room for smaller games, let's plays, and streaming, and a projector in the loft for movies and larger games requiring more space like Dance Dance Revolution, Just Dance, and Guitar Hero/Rock Band. For consoles I have PlayStations 2 through 4 plus a PS TV, Wii/Wii U, Switch, and PC. I often move my consoles around (either for let's play or streaming purposes or to bring them other places), so if you can't find what you're looking for just ask. I don't own any XBox consoles but you're welcome to bring yours if you'd like! Extra consoles, controllers, games, and screens are always welcome; just let me know in advance if you're able so we can plan for it. :) My game & console/controller list is here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/11LvIAgla39HtYpx9PLf6AaVj7DI3i7ypox8qSj23SCo/edit?usp=drivesdk When you arrive please park in a space that does NOT have a number; if those aren't available we have lots of open street parking within the Penderbrook community (I'm right in the middle so either side is cool; parking on Center Way or the middle of Penderbrook Drive is best) but please don't park on a yellow curb or you might be towed! You'll want to turn onto Golf RIDGE, and then onto Golf TEE where I'm the first house on the left. When you enter walk all the way up and to the right; look for the Super Mario Bros. doormat. I'm about 10 driving minutes from the Vienna/Fairfax metro station. We usually go out for dinner at around 5 PM; I live a short drive away from lots of shopping centers including Fair Oaks Mall, Pender, Fairfax Shopping/Towne Center, Fair Lakes Promenade, Fair Lakes Center, and Fairfax Corner. Here's a list of restaurants in the area by food type: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Mn6ytvuaaGaBlpVT-9pBSh8fv6X8_V9wzl4eQKYzRT0/edit?usp=sharing And by shopping center location! https://docs.google.com/document/d/1DZe-ZY5_hKk9SaCSfyjh2eZLNHXTFQLC0QAW12AnYto/edit?usp=sharing Please follow the group's rules & guidelines below: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1PS-UUkkFQ1JDaMp7pCTSGMu2Rqm58X7srdCzhN0Y-xA/edit?usp=drivesdk I also have a few more guidelines, but they're pretty easy to follow: Gaming equipment are not toys. Please be responsible with other people's controllers, consoles, games, furniture, etc. Accidents happen, but if you continuously break things you won't be allowed to use people's equipment. Try and keep a positive atmosphere. A lot of people attend the group to escape from their daily lives. Don't feel like you need to leave your problems at the door, everyone needs to vent once in a while, but please attempt to not do so the whole meetup. We're here to have fun after all, so try and keep it that way! <3
