Comparative Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays Tasting: Germany and Burgundy
Please plan to join the German Wine Society on Saturday, May 2, 2026 at 7:00 pm for a comparative presentation on Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays in Germany and the Burgundy region of France, and tasting of twelve wines to illustrate the varieties of wine made from these grapes in these countries, by our own Annette Schiller. Registrations for this event are due by Tuesday, April 28, 2026, and the price is $55 for GWS members, $62 for non-members. Please be aware that, due to limited supply of the wines and size of the venue, we have a maximum cap of 40 for attendance at this event. Reserve early to avoid disappointment!
What comes to your mind when you hear: âChardonnayâ or âPinot Noirâ? Burgundy, of course! That is rightly so. Burgundy is one of the worldâs most revered wine regions and unique in focusing on two grape varieties: Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. For more than 1000 years Burgundy vintners have understood that different soils and climates give different wines. They have honed their skills to produce wines from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that reflect the place they are coming from.
When you hear: âGermanyâ â you think Riesling. Riesling also is a terroir expressive grape variety and the Germans know about producing a wine that reflects its place. But Germany is not a mono-varietal wine region like Burgundy. There are many more grape varieties growing successfully here. For more than 1000 years Pinot Noir has been grown in Germany, where it is called âSpätburgunder,â directly translating as âlate Burgundy.â Pinot Noir is now the most widely planted red grape in Germany, accounting for 11.8% of all plantings. Chardonnay, in contrast, has only officially been allowed since 1991, though there were earlier trial plantings, and is still only about 2.2% of total cultivation, while Riesling has remained the flagship grape.
Climate change presents new opportunities for German vintners. There is an evolution beyond traditional wine styles and grape varieties. At the same time, Burgundyâs prices have soared and wine lovers often get priced out of their favorite wine. Germany offers a genuine alternative.
At this tasting we will show you Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from both wine regions side by side. We start with a comparison of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Germany and Burgundy on the regional level. The next flight will be a step-up quality-wise: a comparison on the village level. As a highlight we have a comparison of 1er Cru Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Burgundy and Erste Lage (Germanyâs designation of 1er Cru) Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Germany. We will taste 12 wines with many in the upper price bracket. Join us for this one-of-a-kind opportunity to have wines from top Pinot Noir and Chardonnay producers from two different but also in some aspects similar regions. It will be fun to discuss the wines during the tasting and it will be very interesting to hear the verdict of the audience on the favorites.
The planned wine list is depicted below:

French Bistroing at AmĂŠlie (Logan Circle)
**NEW MEMBERS or 1st TIME EVENT GO-ERS**
Before attending your first event, please take a moment to understand how our dinners work and what we ask of members.

**RSVP CUTOFF (i.e. Final Change Your Mind if Registered YES)**
â **RSVP Cancellation Cutoff for this Event is Saturday 10a, 5/2**. (*Late Cancel applies after this, repeat occurrences can impact membership*)
I'm in the mood for a great French bistro-style dinner in DC. We are heading to **AmĂŠlie** in Logan Circle, known for its wine program and classic French fare in a relaxed, modern setting.
**FOOD**: Modern French Bistro, well-executed. AmĂŠlie focuses on approachable French bistro cuisine with an emphasis on small plates and shareable dishes. Diners often highlight escargots, steak frites, and duck confit as reliable standouts, along with mussels prepared in classic broths. Cheese and charcuterie boards are frequently ordered to start, and lighter items like salads and tartines round out the menu for those looking for a less heavy meal.
Executive Chef Anthony Lemortellec, a Parisian who has worked with the legendary chef Alain Ducasse in Paris, moved over from Boqueria where he was Chef.
The wine program is a major draw, with a broad French-leaning selection and rotating options by the glass. Cocktails are quite good but the focus here is wine-driven, which pairs well with the menu structure.
Most members should expect total spend to land roughly in the 55 to 85 dollar range depending on beverage participation.
â **Explore AmĂŠlie's menu:**
**[https://www.ameliedc.com/dinner](https://www.ameliedc.com/dinner)**
**SPACE**: Cozy, stylish interior with a mix of bar seating and dining tables. Expect a lively, social atmosphere with moderate noise, especially on a Saturday evening
â **Visit the restaurant site**: [https://www.ameliedc.com](https://www.ameliedc.com)
- Tax/Tip combo is our required 30% tax/tip policy (see the FAQs for more details).
- Limited to 8 slots.

DC Embassy Adventure: Around the world (food, fun and culture)
***Please read entire posting for details***
Travel the World in One Day (Passport DC)
Join us for one of Washington DCâs most unique cultural experiences â the Around the World Embassy Tour during **Passport DC!
For one special day, embassies across Washington DC open their doors to the public, giving us the chance to travel the world without leaving the city.
Weâll explore different embassies together, experiencing international culture through food, music, art, performances, and cultural demonstrations from countries around the globe.
âď¸ What Weâll Experience
As we embassy-hop, we may encounter:
đ Traditional cultural performances
đ˝ International foods and drinks
đś Music and dance from around the world
đ Cultural fashion and crafts
đ Art exhibits and cultural displays
Participating embassies:
Angola, Azerbaijan, Barbados, Belize, Burkina Faso, China, Costa Rica, CĂ´te dâivoire, Dominican Republic, Egypt, Fuji, Grenada, Guatemala, Haiti, Jamaica, Lebanon, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Mexican, Cultural Institute, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago, Ukraine
Last year, we only visited a few embassies due to long wait times. This year, weâre using a team strategy since we have over 400 RSVPs to this event, this way we can cover more ground and maximize the experience.
đ How It Will Work
We will split into teams (A, B, C, etc.), and each team will start in a different area of DC to avoid crowds.
Each team will have 3 optional roles:
Team Lead â Guides the group and navigates to assigned embassies
Crowd Monitor â Monitors wait times and helps decide whether to stay or skip, can update the group chat with wait times.
Photographer â Captures moments and shares photos in the group chat
đ If you donât want a role, no problemâyou can simply join and enjoy.
âąď¸ Strategy for Lines
If the wait is under 20 minutes â stay
If the wait is over 20 minutes â consider skipping
đ Sign-Up Form
Please sign up here and choose your team and role (if you don't want a leadership role select the option for "no role"):
Try to sign up no later than Thursday night/Friday morning so i have all the info needed to continue planning, and I will send follow up details after we have all the sign-ups.
đ Team Starting Locations & Routes
Each team has been assigned a starting embassy. This is where you will meet your group at 8:30 AM and begin your day. This way you can start assembling in the line and gear up for when the embassies opens their doors.
After exploring your starting embassy, you will move on to the additional embassies listed for your team.
đ Weâve intentionally grouped embassies into nearby clusters, so each teamâs route is walkable and stays within the same area to save time and avoid unnecessary travel. IF YOU WANT TO VISIT AN EMBASSY NOT ON THE LIST - GO FOR IT!
Once you arrive, your Team Lead will gather everyone and kick things off and you will enter the starting embassy. Team leads will be announced after sign-ups. Try to arrive on time so you don't get separated from your group. if you are planning to arrive later in the day and cannot find your group, then you are free to explore the embassies on your own, but its fun to do it as a group!

â ď¸ Important Tips
Wear comfortable walking shoes
Bring water & snacks
Use Metro/Uber (driving is not recommended due to crowds)

Weâre trying this team-based strategy this year to see how it works and whether it helps us visit more embassies. Based on how it goes, weâll decide if we want to use this approach again next year or try something different.

Real Connection-Real Theology
**Real connection with fellow Catholics who are eager to grow in Faith and friendship!** This 3 year--- 45min deep dive into the Catholic faith is a great way to spend your Sunday rest day.
When you are ready to dig deeper and live the faith more fully this is an optimal opportunity. Talk yourself into this!
You may start whenever and can come as often or as little as you desire.
Coffee is served w/ small donation.
It is taught by the priest and/or OCIA director at St Louis Parish who are ALL fabulous- faithful educators filled with theologically inspired knowledge.
You can ask questions at the end, which I love.
It is just a wonderful experience to grow.
Afterwards if you wish, you can also find your way over to the Little Way Cafe Coffee shop across the parking lot to stay for more community time or read some of the excellent books that line the shelves throughout.
If you are new to the community of Alexandria and want to meet like minded folks or a veteran of it, this is a special and unique opportunity and did I mention it is free? :) Hard to believe!
Please join me every Sunday at 945 am.
