April Book Club Meetup: Evenings and Weekends by Oisín McKenna
London's Friendly Book Club's pick for April is **Evenings and Weekends** by **Oisín McKenna**.
This city stops for no-one. Not the half-naked boozers, stoners, and cruisers, the hen parties glugging from bejewelled bottles, the drag queens puffing on hurried fags. It’s June 2019 in London and everyone has converged on the parks, beer gardens and street corners to revel in the collective joys of being alive.
Everyone but Maggie. She’s 30, pregnant and broke. Faced with moving back to the town she fought to escape, she’s wondering if having a baby with boyfriend Ed will be the last spontaneous act of her life. Ed, meanwhile, is trying to run from his past with Maggie’s best friend Phil and harbouring secret dreams of his own.
Phil hates his office job and is living for the weekend, while falling for his housemate, Keith. But there’s a problem: Keith has a boyfriend and there might not be room for three people in the relationship. Then there’s Rosaleen, Phil’s mother, who’s tired of feeling like a side character in her own life. She’s just been diagnosed with cancer and is travelling to London to tell Phil, if she can ever get hold of him.
As Saturday night approaches, all their lives are set to change forever. It’s the hottest summer on record and the weekend is about to begin.
Please only RSVP if you think you'll be able to make this event. **We host three sessions per book, you only need to attend one.**
Everyone is welcome! Grab your copy and join us for a relaxed and engaging discussion.

I have a table for 8 people booked.
*As usual, this meetup will have a strict "no show" policy - anyone who is marked as going, and does not turn up without giving notice, will be removed from the group.*

North Wales Castle Adventure – 3 Days of Medieval Magic 🏰
# 🏰 **North Wales Castle Adventure**
### *3 Days • Medieval Castles • Sea, Stone & Stories*
📅 **18–20 April 2026**
Some places don’t just show you history.
They **whisper it** through stone walls, sea wind and ancient towers.
North Wales is one of those places.
This is an invitation to step into a land of kings, fortresses and legends — to walk where armies once marched, to stand on castle walls with the Irish Sea below and the mountains of Snowdonia behind you.
This is not a rushed tour.
It’s a **carefully crafted journey**, designed for people who love stories, places with soul, and the quiet magic of old stones.
***
## ✨ Why this journey is special
🏰 Castles that feel alive
🌊 Dramatic coastal views
🏔 Mountains on the horizon
👣 Time to explore, not rush
👥 A small group of like-minded explorers
🎟 **All castle entries included**
You don’t need to plan.
You just need curiosity.
***
## 🛏 **Our base by the sea**
We’ll stay for **two nights at Travelodge Colwyn Bay**, a calm seaside town and the perfect base for our explorations.
• Comfortable hotel
• A short walk to the beach
• Easy access to all castles
• Evenings with sea air and sunset walks
***
## 🗓️ **The Journey**
🗺️ **PROGRAMME**
### 🗓 **Day 1 – Saturday, 18 April**
### *The first stones speak*
Our journey begins as we cross into Wales and step back in time.
🏰 **Rhuddlan Castle**
A fortress with a rare diamond-shaped design, guarding the River Clwyd.
Quiet, elegant and full of atmosphere — the perfect first encounter with medieval Wales.
🏰 **Conwy Castle & Town Walls**
One of the greatest castles ever built. Eight towers, complete town walls, and views that stretch from the harbour to the mountains.
Walking the walls of Conwy feels like stepping inside a living history book.
In the evening, we check in and enjoy a peaceful seaside walk as the sun sinks into the Irish Sea.
***
### 🗓 **Day 2 – Sunday, 19 April**
### *Castles of power and ambition*
🏰 **Beaumaris Castle**
The most perfectly designed castle of its time — and yet never finished.
A beautiful reminder that even kings sometimes leave dreams incomplete.
🏰 **Caernarfon Castle**
Bold, imposing and unforgettable.
This is the castle of princes and ceremonies, built to impress and dominate. Standing here, you feel its power immediately.
🏰 **Dolwyddelan Castle** *(if time allows)*
A mountain stronghold rising from the landscape itself. A quiet, atmospheric stop for photos and fresh mountain air.
Evening back by the sea, with warm food and shared stories.
***
### 🗓 **Day 3 – Monday, 20 April**
### *The sea and the final crown*
🏰 **Criccieth Castle**
A smaller castle with a dramatic soul, standing on a rocky headland above the bay.
Perfect light, endless sea and a feeling of quiet strength.
🏰 **Harlech Castle**
The crown of North Wales.
High above the sea, with Snowdonia behind it, Harlech feels timeless.
This is where we pause, take it all in, and let the journey settle.
We return in the evening, carrying images and stories that stay far longer than photographs.

Dedham Vale Part 2: the Bluebells of Arger Fen and Spouses and Sudbury
Hey guys?! You know what? It is BLUEBELLS OCLOCK! Yaaaaaaaaayyyyyy and I am taking you to a BRAND NEW hike with many, many more bluebell woods. How amazing is that?
As you know, Britain is one of the best places in the world to experience bluebells. Yes, experience, FIRST, as you arrive around the corner, you smell their delicate scent, SECOND, the first contact as you finally see it, a purple carpet that goes on and on, and THIRD, you marvel at it, as you get closer for that glorious shot of pretty you in this ocean of purple beauties. You will be the most delicate flower in this sea of colours... and if you are a straight macho man who does not want to look like a delicate flower, well, that's ok, you can be the cool macho man with a brand new profile photo that will attract the ladies... :) it works either way.
If you do not care about flowers, well there are plenty more reasons to join... painted by some of the greatest masters, you will be walking through some actual living paintings.
There is a reason why the Area of Natural Outstanding Beauty is called Constable Country, the famous John Constable himself has painted many of his master pieces based on the scenes in the region and you might recognise some of his most famous scenes as you walk through it, it is a bit as if you were one of his character evolving in one of his worlds, and, who knows, maybe you are, and someone will be looking at you and regognise the masterpiece that you are!
This is part 2 of the hikes in the area as we explore the most Western side of the region which is very different from the first one and we will be begining in the beautiful town of Sudbury.

Join us on a new **wildlife trip** to the **world's only managed colony of Mute Swans**!
I visited the Swannery last year and was so captivated that I knew I had to organise this trip for the group – something fresh and truly special, even for those of you who have been on many trips before.
Nestled in a picturesque setting alongside Fleet Lagoon on the stunning Jurassic Coast, **Abbotsbury Swannery** is widely regarded as one of Dorset's most unforgettable wildlife experiences. **April is a magical time to visit:** the swannery is at the height of its nesting season, with hundreds of Mute Swans incubating their eggs. You will have the rare privilege of **walking among them and their nests remarkably close** – an experience that never fails to leave a lasting impression! The **daily mass swan feeding** **takes place at noon** and you're very welcome to take part and feed the swans yourself. With **up to 600 Mute Swans** jostling and flapping for their share, it is an unforgettable spectacle.
The swannery has a rich and fascinating history, having been founded over **600 years ago by Benedictine monks** who originally bred the swans for food. Today the swans are fully protected. Film enthusiasts may also recognise the site from its appearance in ***Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince***.
After visiting the swannery, we'll head to the popular **seaside resort town of Weymouth** for lunch. You'll have free time to explore its picturesque historic harbour, stroll along the beautiful **three-mile sandy Weymouth Beach**, recognised as one of the best in the UK, and simply relax by the sea.
Finally, we'll head to see the **huge chalk figure** carved into the hillside, depicting King George III on his horse. Weymouth was the king's favourite holiday destination, and his patronage transformed the town into a fashionable resort that did much to popularise sea bathing among the upper classes.
This trip is a **relaxed day out and suitable for everyone** – it's a great chance to experience new places that we normally don't have time for on our hikes! 🤩
**ITINERARY**
**07:45** Meet outside Hotel Novotel London West, 1 Shortlands, W6 8DR (a five-minute walk from Hammersmith Station)
**08:00** Sharp departure
**11:15-13:00** Abbotsbury Swannery – home to the world's only managed colony of Mute Swans. Wander among hundreds of swans and their nests, and take part in the daily feeding.
**13:30-15:30** Enjoy lunch at your leisure in the charming seaside resort town of Weymouth. Explore the historic harbour, stroll the Georgian seafront or simply relax on the sandy beach.
**15:45** Photo stop at Osmington White Horse – the magnificent chalk figure of King George III on horseback, carved into the hillside
**19:00** London, Hammersmith

Day trip to Brighton
https://a248.e.akamai.net/secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/3/7/0/d/600_457574093.jpeg
Brighton is one of the most popular seaside towns in England. It is one of the closest to London with very good train links into Victoria & London Bridge Stations. You will be able to enjoy the beach with all the usual attractions of a seaside town, as well as a Sea Life Centre and very attractive shopping area called “The Lanes”. There is one landmark that stands out in the city and that is the Royal Pavilion, the royal palace built for King George IV when he was Prince of Wales. The design has influences of Indian architecture, which gives it an unusual oriental appearance.
We begin our tour at London Bridge station at the lower level ticket office. When we get to Brighton, there will be a guided tour around the city, which will finish at the Royal Pavilion. You will then have free time until we meet to come back to London.
The price you pay for the tour includes the train ticket, a guided walk and entry to the Royal Pavilion.
