POSTPONED-Profs & Pints DC: Wink, Nod, Kill
POSTPONED-Profs & Pints DC: Wink, Nod, Kill
**This talk has been postponed to March 9th in response to a winter storm. Tickets for the March 9th staging of it are available at** [https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/dc-wink-nod-kill ](https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/dc-wink-nod-kill )**Anyone who had purchased a ticket for January 26th will be getting a refund.** [Profs and Pints DC](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“Wink, Nod, Kill,”** a look at implicit calls for violence and other speech that leads to bloodshed and threatens democracy, with Kurt Braddock, assistant professor of communications at American University and expert on terrorism. [Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/wink-nod-kill](https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/wink-nod-kill) .[ Over the last decade, President Donald Trump and many of his allies have used language that implicitly advocates for the use of violence without directing it outright. From telling the Proud Boys to “stand back and stand by” to suggesting that legal acts of Democratic lawmakers should be “punishable by death,” Trump has consistently suggested that violence is a viable means of addressing political grievances. Support for political violence—implicit or explicit—goes beyond the sort of spirited debate and disagreement upon which the American experiment was founded. It represents a gray area in the connection between violent language and violent acts, an area that Kurt Braddock has spent years studying. Learn about research on the connection between real bloodshed and coded language, dogwhistles, and implicit calls for violence with Dr. Braddock, who has conducted research on communication and terrorism for several national and international organizations, including the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Department of State, and the United Nations Office of Counter Terrorism. Professor Braddock will give his audience a firm grounding in the concept of “stochastic terrorism,” or political violence spawned by vague calls to violent action. Tapping into decades of research on communication and decision-making and accounts of specific violent acts inspired by implicit orders, he’ll show us that the threat posed by implicit calls to violence is real. He’ll discuss whether implicit calls for violence represent a “new” form of political communication protected by the First Amendment, and he’ll describe the real-world dangers posed by these kinds of statements. Among the questions Dr. Braddock will tackle: Why do politicians use this language if they can reasonably assume that someone may be motivated by it to hurt someone else? Perhaps most importantly, what can we do about it, especially given the sacrosanctity of the First Amendment? His talk promises to give you a much more sophisticated understanding of recent events and a clearer sense of what might lie ahead. (Door: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. The talk starts 30 minutes later.) Image: Right-wing pundit and podcaster Steve Bannon routinely uses violent rhetoric. (Photo by Nordiske Mediedager / Creative Commons. )

Weekend Getaway To New York City
Weekend Getaway To New York City
**Are you ready to have fun in the big apple and the city that never sleeps!** because we really won’t be sleeping 😉.. All the details pertaining to our Winter NYC trip are as follow: **\*\*\* As a preface : Please Throughly read this entire message and if you have further questions please email me at t_bland73@yahoo.com. Please refrain from sending unnecessary questions and comments regarding trip in the chat . Thanks!** … All information listed is to be used as a suggested guide, by no means are you subjected to follow the suggested listings. I understand everyone has their own preferences and activities they enjoy doing while traveling.\*\*\*\* **Accommodations**: There are a plethora of hotels to choose from in the city. The suggested/ recommended hotel of choice is The AC Marriott in Times Square. This is a fairly new, beautiful, and modern hotel in Times Square and an easy ten minute walk from the train station. It has a restaurant and rooftop bar and lounge. The prevailing rates are very affordable at $440 Total with taxes and fees for a king room and $484 Total taxes and fees for 2 double queens. These rates are dynamic. I do suggest booking early for the best rates. **Transportation: Amtrak is suggested mode of transportation.** I highly suggest taking Amtrak to NYC as it is a comfortable ride and you do not have to worry about gas, parking and dealing with NYC traffic . I will be departing on Friday, January 30th on train 182( current rate $51) at 10:03 am from BWI Rail Station and returning on Sunday, February 1st on train 145 ( current rate $73) leaving at 12:55 pm from NYP. It is approximately 3 hours each way. The Parking garage rate at BWI rail station is $12 per day. The Rates will vary depending on day and time of departure. However, I will stress the earlier you book train tickets the better the rate. In my experience, I rarely see the rate decrease prior to 45 days in advance of departure. For Amtrak booking make sure you are putting in NYP/ for New York Penn Station Arrival Station which is located in Midtown Manhattan. If you will be staying at the AC Marriott Times Square, it is approximately a ten minute walk from Penn Station. Keep in mind : these prices are not locked in. They are dynamic and you will be subjected to prevailing prices depending on the time you book. I highly suggest booking early for best pricing. **Dining: Food/Drinks are on your own dime and won’t be provided. We will have a group meal at least once during the trip. RESCHEDULED Keys Gap to David Lesser Shelter (7 miles, 948 ft)
RESCHEDULED Keys Gap to David Lesser Shelter (7 miles, 948 ft)
*This hike was originally scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 24, and is being postponed to Sunday, Feb. 1 because of snow. While Saturday isn't supposed to be snowy during the day, we are concerned about folks getting stuck in the beginnings of it on the drive home. We apologize for anyone who can't make it on Feb. 1 but hope to see you on another hike soon.* Join us for a pleasant and relatively gentle hike on the Appalachian Trail in Virginia. The highlight of this hike is the David Lesser Shelter, which features a swing, large seating and picnic areas and other minor attractions. The trail has only a moderate amount of elevation. However, we consider this hike moderately challenging due to its length. We’ll move at a steady 2-3 mph pace with a break at the aforementioned Lesser Shelter, which is also our turn-around point. We'll take other quick breaks on the trail as needed. Please carry a minimum of 1 to 1.5L of water with you. After the hike we will go to nearby Harvest Gap Brewery. Meet time & location: We'll meet at 8:15 am at the East Falls Church (EFC) metro station to consolidate into as few cars as possible given the limited parking at the trailhead. The trailhead is about an hour from EFC. Route: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/west-virginia/appalachian-trail-keys-gap-to-david-lesser-memorial-shelter Brewery (also has food): https://harvestgap.com/ CARPOOLING: We encourage those with cars to be willing to carpool - you're the ones who make LMH great! If you're a driver that is willing to drive, please post a comment on the event page with the following information: (1) Number of seats (2) Meeting location (3) Meeting time As a rider, please comment on the driver's post to take a seat or post in the comments that you need a ride so a driver can find you. Riders are encouraged to help their driver out with the cost of gas. By signing up for this event, you acknowledge and agree that Late Morning Hikers, its volunteer organizers, and drivers who volunteer to carpool are not responsible or liable for accidents, injuries, damage, or losses that may occur while traveling to or from the hike. Late Morning Hikers does not condone or encourage impaired driving. Drivers are expected to follow applicable laws and make responsible transportation choices. We look forward to hiking with you! Free In-person Meeting: Unwanted Emotions & Loneliness, How to Get Over Them
Free In-person Meeting: Unwanted Emotions & Loneliness, How to Get Over Them
This is an in-person meeting. Did you know that unwanted emotions like loneliness, sadness, hopelessness, anger, fear, anxiety, or feelings of irritation don’t just fall on you for no reason. They are not random occurrences that simply happen to people's minds. They are definitely not chemical imbalance in your brain due to some nebulous chemical reactions by chance. Your negative emotions are the symptoms of the painful experiences that you have which are not healed, and which are still affecting you. The effects of these painful experiences are exacerbated by the pressures or difficulties of the other problems in your life. For instance, let's say you are already carrying a huge load on your back, then you cannot take on much more, but, let's say something else happens to you, such as the difficulties from the Pandemic, then the resultant combined weight on you can take you over the edge, kind of like the straw that break the camel's back. When this happens, people's attention usually goes to the straw that was added, but actually the majority of the weight had come from the huge load that were already there, holding a person down and causing a person issues. So how do you remove the huge load that was already there? How do you lighten them up? Is it possible to get rid of them? That is what this meeting will be all about. Come to our Meetup, where we can introduce you to some of the knowledge, tools and techniques of the breakthroughs in the field of the mind that we can apply to this ever important area of life. Be sure to click on the red "Attend" button below to come to this local event. We look forward to seeing you there. This group is created by the Dianetics and Scientology Life Improvement Center of Central Ohio.
