Come volunteer with us refurbishing donated bicycles so that they can be used again by the community! This event is open to new volunteers and existing volunteers. No mechanical experience is necessary. Note: The warehouse location is in the alley behind 1502 Mt Vernon Ave. Enter through the gray door next to a roll-down garage door. If you drive to the location, be sure to park in the street, not in the alleys or parking lots surrounding the warehouse. And wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty with bicycle grease! Volunteers under 18 need a parent or guardian to accompany them to their first volunteer experience and sign a liability waiver. Volunteers under 16 need a parent or guardian to accompany them at all times while volunteering with Vélocity.

Book club: "All In Her Head" by Elizabeth Comen
# Our April Book Club. This book club will be hosted at [Teaism ](https://www.teaism.com/restaurants/penn-quarter/?srsltid=AfmBOorH2yXjY8aqE5KRHXkCvxk8zgPx7yJXCwgMLvXfPbZGMykYgNRW)(Penn quarter location; 400 8th St NW). However if 4 or fewer people RSVP it will be moved to virtual ([https://meet.google.com/bux-wtkw-qdp?hs=224](https://meet.google.com/bux-wtkw-qdp?hs=224)). Please check up on meetup or [www.dc-now.org/events](http://www.dc-now.org/events) for updates on location and time before coming. The history of women’s healthcare is a story in which women themselves have too often been voiceless—a narrative instead written from the perspective of men who styled themselves as authorities on the female of the species, yet uninformed by women’s own voices, thoughts, fears, pain and experiences. The result is a cultural and societal legacy of gender bias in medicine that continues to shape the (mis)treatment and care of women. While the modern age has seen significant advancements in the medical field, the notion that female bodies are flawed inversions of the male ideal lingers on—as do the pervasive societal stigmas and lingering ignorance that shape women’s health and relationships with their own bodies. In a feat of compelling science writing, Memorial Sloan Kettering oncologist and medical historian Dr. Elizabeth Comen draws back the curtain on the collective medical history of women to reintroduce us to our whole bodies—how they work, the actual doctors and patients whose perspectives and experiences laid the foundation for today’s medical thought, and the many oversights that still remain unaddressed. With a physician’s knowledge and empathy, Dr. Comen follows the road map of the eleven organ systems to share unique and untold stories, drawing upon medical texts and journals, interviews with expert physicians, as well as her own experience treating thousands of women. Empowering women to better understand ourselves and encouraging patient advocacy for care that prioritizes healthy and joyful lives— for us and generations to come—All in Her Head is written with humor, wisdom, and deep scientific and cultural insight. Eye-opening, sometimes enraging, yet always captivating, this shared memoir of women’s medical history is an essential contribution to a holistic understanding and much-needed reclaiming of women’s history and bodies. **Day and Time:** To be determined **RSVP**: [https://www.dc-now.org/events-1/all-in-her-head-the-truth-and-lies-early-medicine-taught-us-about-womens-bodies-and-why-it-matters-today](https://www.dc-now.org/events-1/all-in-her-head-the-truth-and-lies-early-medicine-taught-us-about-womens-bodies-and-why-it-matters-today) **Join our group chat below:** DCNOW book club group chat. ClubFeminist Chills: Poetry Picnic in the Park - 1st park event!
Bring your favorite poems or poetry books, a blanket, snacks, and a tumbler with your drink of choice. Join us for a relaxed afternoon in the park where we’ll sunbathe, unwind, and listen to the voices of powerful women through poetry. You’re welcome to read something you love, share a piece that moved you, or simply listen and take it all in. There’s no pressure to read out loud. You can participate however you’d like. This is part of our ClubFeminist in the Park series, a more casual way to gather, connect, and experience ideas together in an open, low-pressure setting. Pets, open minds, and plus ones are welcome. (I will bring some snacks and extra poems)

Hike Gertrude S. Lawrence Hoover Nature Preserve near Galena
This trail is a meandering path through the woods. There will be some overlooks and a couple stops at the creek as well as time along a waterway. It will not be a fast paced hike. There is some elevation change and uneven terrain. I will be using poles just to be safe! Will aim to get in about three miles. Optional lunch after if there is an interest.
