Briar Chapel Trail Workday

Details

Hi folks!

We have another Trail Workday in Briar Chapel scheduled for August 16th, starting at 9am. We’re meeting in the clubhouse parking lot at 1600 Briar Chapel Parkway. The meetup event is available here: https://www.meetup.com/torc-nc/events/310341041/ .

We took your feedback and are adjusting how we plan & announce workdays!

  • Announcing in advance: It’s more than a few days out! Mark your calendars for August 16th, 9-11am 😉
  • Breakfast: Some kind neighbors volunteered to provide light breakfast. We will look at how many folks say they’re coming (ideally on meetup, but I’ll count replies/commitments here too) to determine how much food we bring.
  • Sharing the plan. See the attached screenshot for a prioritized list of tasks. We have 10 areas that need attention, however, we are extremely unlikely to get them all unless there are 30 volunteers.
  • We are re-opening 1 area that is grown shut
  • If we get 20+ people, we can start restoring Frog Creek, which washed out during Chantelle.
  • Is this newbie friendly? Yes - we will pair you with someone more experienced, you’ll know where to meet, and you’ll get contact information from someone (me) in case you get lost.
  • Is this child friendly? Sort of - the tools we’re using are not child friendly, however, if you’re interested in hiking & trimming w/ loppers, they can explore with you (and clean up by hand after 😉 ).
  • What to bring? Trimmers (gas, battery), loppers, a rake or two. I will have limited spares.
  • Post workday ride? If you want to lead a ride, let me know and I’ll add it to the post. My schedule doesn’t allow me to lead it.

As usual, please dress for the weather. Bring water, gloves, hats, and other safety gear. Also, please make sure you have signed the waiver https://www.torc-nc.org/waiver/ .

Future workdays will target (in no particular order): Restore Frog Creek, build at least 1 bridge, build at least 1 board walk, rock armor a few areas, some erosion management, install Pisgah-style trail markers.
