COUNTRYSIDE WALK: HENLEY, THAMES, WOODS and MEDIEVAL VILLAGES

Details

Get out of London for a day in the countryside in the company of great friends! On this Bank Holiday Weekend (Sunday) we will visit Henley on Thames, the beautiful market town set on the Thames in the midst of the stunning Oxfordshire Chiltern Hills. Henley is the home of the famous Henley Regatta and Henley Festival.

From there we will embark upon a walk through scenic rural Oxfordshire. It is approximately a 10.5 mile walk, and there are is only 1 exit point after about 8 miles. We head out along the Thames Path from Henley, to the pretty historic Hambleden Village after which, we will proceed through the Great Wood for 1 mile before heading back across Hambleden lock in a 'fiqure of eight' to the medieval village of Remenham with its historic church dating back to norman times. This is a very scenic walk, outward along the Thames, through woods and back again to Henley across open countryside, with many places of interest on this walk.

This day out will also be a great opportunity to socialise and make new friends. We will finish the walk close to a large pub in Henley where the socialising can continue.

We start the event at Henley Station at 1.30pm. Trains are available from Paddington Station in Central London. Journey time is approximately 1 hour 10 mins with 2 changes (usually at Slough and Twyford).

Aim to arrive at Paddington at about 11.30am (there will be a host at Paddington) if you want to take advantage of group travel discounts (I/3 off), and also allow time to purchase tickets etc. We will not be stopping at a pub for lunch therefore it is essential that you bring snacks and/or sandwiches for a short 20 minute picnic en route. We also finish the walk at Henley. Trains back from Henley to London are available at half hourly intervals.

Social Event:
Our walks are social walks, where the emphasis is on meeting new people, enjoying nature, healthy exercise, and fresh air. Our walks are not interrupted with running commentaries or historical lectures, although occasionally features of significance may be pointed out. As such our walks will be continuous with few stops and it is your responsibilty to keep walkers ahead in view and to follow the direction of the walk. We always end the walk at a pub with a convivial atmosphere where the socialising can continue. Be sure to join us in the pub for the whole experience!

Please arrive in good time to allow opportunity to use toilets at the start of the walk as there may not be any toilet breaks readily available during the walk.

RISKS for all WALKS: In the walks in this group we use; country stiles, pavements, cross busy roads, public parkland, paths alongside water, bridlepaths, country lanes and other established paths and tracks through woodland, bush and countryside. Wear good sturdy shoes/walking boots. To avoid insects, thorns, and stinging nettles, bare legs are not recommended. Take care as surfaces may be uneven, there may be low branches and some paths are also used by joggers and cyclists and sometimes cars (country lanes). Some tracks may be muddy and slippery. On occasion we may encounter wild and farm animals. If you require insurance for these walks you must arrange this yourself.
Unfortunately no large dogs and small children are allowed on these walks.
