The Warren Astronomical Society meets on the first Monday of the month in the auditorium of the Cranbrook Institute of Science.

We simulcast meetings online using Zoom. Meetup charges even more money to set up hybrid meetings, so subscribe to our email list on warrenastro.org to get the Zoom links! Meetings are also livestreaming on our YouTube channel.

At the meetings, we spend the first hour or so of the meeting on club business and observing reports, then have two presentations, one short and one full-length.

Main Talk:
Worlds Apart: The Living Moons of Our Solar System

For decades now, astronomers and the general public have debated the controversy: What is a planet? Jonathan Kade says, "Who cares?! The real question is, what is a world?"
In this presentation, Jonathan will share with you the sights, sounds*, and smells** of the most interesting and lively worlds in the solar system outside of our own sweet home. From the uncannily familiar surface of Titan to the cold oceans of Enceladus, Jonathan will take you on a trip through much more interesting places than the dead rocky planets of the inner solar system or the stormy and inhospitable gas and ice giants. He'll also discuss the probability of life existing on these fascinating bodies and tell you how you can see some of them yourself through a small telescope.
* Of one moon in particular.
** Okay, maybe not the smells.
About the Speaker
Jonathan Kade roots for the underdog and strives to shed light on underexposed topics. He has been attending WAS events for almost 25 years and has been a member for nearly 20. After a five-year vacation from the WAS board, he has returned to serve as the First Vice-President and would love for you to tell him what subjects you want covered in WAS presentations... and what subjects you would like to present about.
Short Talk:
The WAS Named Awards, an Introduction

Every year, the WAS hosts an awards banquet in December, some of them are named for a prominent member in the club's past. In this short talk, Dale will go through the history of our named awards, along with a bit of a preamble of the more generic ones.
About the Speaker
Dale joined the WAS in 2007, then, starting in 2012, served on the board for eight years in the capacity of secretary, treasurer, and publications director. He has edited the WASP for nine years and received the Mabel Sterns Newsletter Award from the Astronomical League in 2021. He is the proud owner of two very nice recliners to aid in his armchair astronomy research.
