Weekend Trip - Scotland - Isle of Skye & Ben Nevis
Details
Join us for an epic weekend away in Scotland! We will be doing two hikes with a rest day in-between. Please ensure read all warnings at the bottom before signing up. Including our usual disclaimers that will be added to each walks own event page.
Thursday - Meet at accommodation. Get settled in. Can also meet up somewhere en route e.g. Loch Lomond.
Friday - Hike #1 - Ben Nevis via CMD (Càrn Mòr Dearg) Arête route - the highest mountain in the UK.
THIS INVOLVES WALKING ALONG A RIDGE. It is not as dangerous as Crib Goch up Mt. Snowden or Sharp Edge up Blencathra or Striding Edge up Hellvelyn. One website describes it, "There’s not much technical climbing on the ridge itself, and it isn’t hugely challenging, so should be well within the capabilities of experienced hikers with a head for heights."
See walk's event page (will update link soon) here for itinerary.
Saturday - Rest Day/Leisurely Activities
No need to stick together today. In Snowdonia, we went in smaller groups and did different things on the rest day.
Will list ideas later.
Sunday - Hike #2 Old Man of Storr (pictured) & Exploring Isle of Skye
See walk's event page (will update link soon) here for itinerary.
AirBnB Accomodation
I have booked a house, see here. It has 6 bedrooms and can accommodate up to 8 people (more if people either do not mind sharing one of the double beds or do not mind sleeping on an air bed - I can bring a double bed sized one).
It will be £186 per person for the four nights (less if more than 8 stay). First come first served. I will comment each time a spot is taken. Happy for people to pay me £93 up front and then the remaining £93 first week of September if that makes it financially easier. Pay here - let me know if having issues with it.
I forget to mention this on previous trips; there will be no refund unless someone else takes your spot. They will pay me the £186 and I will then refund you.
Warning - Fitness
As much as we try to accomodate people of all fitness levels, hiking in Scotland is extremely hard! Hiking anywhere in Yorkshire is a walk in the park compared to Scotland! You must be able to at least walk up hills in Yorkshire without needing to stop for long periods. Getting out of breath is fine and stopping for short periods also is okay.
This is for your own safety as much as the groups. If unfit you risk having a heart attack. Ben Nevis is 1300m+ above sea level and is hundreds of miles/kilometres north of Yorkshire. Due to the time of the year, being so far north and being up so high there is potential for it to be sub-zero degree temperatures on the summit of Ben Nevis even in early autumn. Or it could be shorts & t-shirts weather, who knows in this country! The average temp at the summit of Ben Nevis in October is 3C (high), -1C (low). Therefore if the group must keep stopping to wait they are not only getting cold from the air but their own sweat, that is dangerous. For the groups safety, stopping needs to be kept to a minimum.
Warning - Terrain
The CMD route is extremely rocky once on the ridge. You need to be comfortable with walking and scrambling on and over large boulders while up high. Please be sure you are confident on walking terrain like this before joining.
Warning - Weather
Weather in Britain is unpredictable especially more so up in Scotland. You must be comfortable hiking in cloudy conditions (don't worry we will not be doing the CMD route if it is cloudy on the ridge). Be sure to bring plenty of layers with you, there is no guarantee what the weather or temperature will be like.
