Parking is free for 62 year olds and up in the lot; street parking is available. We will aim for 23-24 minutes per mile pace. Distance/Terrain: 4.0 to 5.0 miles will be the approximate goal. If inclement weather looks to be a problem, a revised post will be up by noon.
Directions: Overall - start point is main Rockefeller State Park parking lot, about a 3 minute drive west from Pace University and Taconic and 9A exits on route 117 and about one mile going east from route 9 exit onto route 117..

While the overall distance is light -likely under 3 miles -there is a decent up so please keep that in mind before signing up.

Meetup Location - Locke Lane, Yorktown Heights, NY 10598 - other option -the entrance is opposite the entrance for the Peter Pratt Inn on 118 -so that may be helpful for the directionally challenged - to be crystal clear -you are not going to the Peter Pratt Inn - the road for the Turkey Mountain hike is opposite the road off 118 that you would take to the Peter Pratt Inn

# Turkey Mountain Nature Preserve

Turkey Mountain was preserved through the efforts of concerned citizens who recognized its value, and its preservation and maintenance are a continuing concern of the Yorktown Land Trust. The 125 acre preserve, owned by the Town of Yorktown, offers summit views at 831 feet to the Croton Reservoir and dam; the Hudson River; the New York City skyline to the south; Bear Mountain, across the Hudson; the Hudson Highlands; and on a clear day, the ridge of the Shawangunks.

Location: Off the west side of Route 118, approximately 2 mile south of the intersection of Routes 202, 35, and 118, and one mile north of the intersection of Route 129 and 118, opposite of Croton Heights Road.

Description

Fast paced hike. Approximately 2 hours, over 6 miles and possibly over 7 miles. (No two hikes are identical). There are early outs.

Terrain: Easy to moderate, mainly rolling hills.

Cancellation notices: If cancellation is necessary, it will be posted on the afternoon of the hike, or sooner.

Pets: Friendly, well behaved dogs are welcome. The park requires dogs to be leashed at all times. It is possible that we will encounter one or more horses with riders or carriages. They have the right of way and you are expected to control your dog.

Features a number of photo ops - Views, Ted's Bench - a mini waterfall, cumulative elevation for the day n more

Assuming trail conditions permit - we may incorporate a route that we have never done before

Estimated Distance - 7.999 to 9.999 miles - this is a good hike for my Sunday regulars who want to dip their toes on a longer hike

Estimated End Time - Likely between 2 and 2:30 -I need to be off-trail by 2:30

Michael Ciaiola Conservation Area, previously known as Merritt Park (and also sometimes known as Haviland Hollow), consists of over 800 acres and is Putnam County's largest county park.

Great Hollow is located at 225 State Route 37, New Fairfield, CT, near the intersection of State Route 37 and Haviland Hollow Road. Our administrative office is located in the Merritt House and usually open from 9am-5pm, Monday-Friday.

We are meeting at the main lot -across from the Observation Tower and the Birds of Prey Display

### By Car

If driving from the south and New York City area, take I-684 North to Route 22 North in Brewster. Take 22 North approximately 7 miles to Haviland Hollow Road. Make a right on Haviland Hollow Road and take it to the end. Turn left onto Route 37 and our entrance will be on your left in about 50 yards.

From NY: From the intersection of Route 22 and Route 55, follow Route 22 South for 4.75 miles until you come to a traffic light. Take a left at the light onto Haviland Hollow Road. Drive approximately 2.5 miles to the end of the road. Turn left onto Route 37 and our entrance will be on your left.

From CT: Follow Route 7 south into the town of Gaylordsville. Take a right onto Route 55 and then a left onto Route 39. Follow Route 39 into the town of Sherman and then bear right onto Route 37. Follow Route 37 south for about 6 miles and our entrance will be on your right, about 50 yards before the intersection with Haviland Hollow Road.
