WordPress Performance Tuning
The last Meetup was a lively session in which discussion of the advantages of WordPress PageBuilders combined with MultiPurpose themes presented some great opportunities for doing SiteBuilding - creating the complete look and layout of a Landing Page. But during the discussion we discovered that a number of attendees' great page designs had performance problems - with load times well beyond the Google 2 seconds or better limit. In fact some websites went well beyond the "Kissmetrics 4 seconds is the kiss of death" for load times on a website. So after asking the Meet group what they wanted to see next time [ixnay for WordPress Forms and mail handlers], I missed the obvious - a presentation about improving WordPress speed and performance . Four trends make the topic timely: 1)There are great and mostly free online tools for diagnosing website speed problems. Most of the tools provide excellent insights into what is needed to improve your website's performance; 2)Media such as fullscreen images, video banners, and animations have become popular in website designs. But all of these tools, if not prepared properly can effect response time negatively. So we look at media compression tools; 3)There is a whole array of free and premium caching plugins that can improve overall web speed and are an essential part of performance tuning fr WordPress; 4)Assessing use of Cloud services, CDNs, and better hosting providers is the last but sometimes most important ingredient in tuning a WordPress website. In a case of Doctor "heal thyself" I will be showing how some of the methods just mentioned were used to improve performance on my own personal websites with hopefully some revealing before and after speed tests. But if you have a website in need of a speed tune-up, please send a web URL to your presenter jbsurveyer [at] gmail for a LIVE speed improvement demo exercise,

What we're about

The Toronto WordPress Group brings together WordPress enthusiasts of all types, whether you are a designer, programmer or end-user; beginner, intermediate, or advanced.

Starting with informal "pub social" Meetups in January 2010, we've grown through pubs, cafes, libraries, and office spaces. At our peak we were running meetups with ~80 attendees per session. We're now running a handful of different meetup series in spaces around Toronto, from Etobicoke to Scarborough.

The group is evolving, as is the meeting structure. With presentations on a wide range of WordPress related topics, and great discussion about all things WordPress, meetings are lively and interesting. Join us, and find out why WordPress is so popular!
