FREE Custom Controller Workshop @ Makespace

A hands-on workshop for children, families and young adults run in association with the Make:Shift:Do annual festival of digital making organised by the Crafts Council across UK makerspaces and craft studios.

Installation Required (or InstallReq for short) is made up of Katy Marshall, a digital artist and Alex Johansson, a game designer currently based in Cambridge. With InstallReq their aim is to explore ways that custom peripherals can be used to add to the gaming experience for both the players and the audience.

Event Details

Join us for a custom controller workshop where we take steps away from the keyboard and gamepad and explore the fun and creative infinite possibilities of interacting with digital games.

We'll be using the wonderful MakeyMakey kit, a whole lot of cardboard, crocodile clips, some basic circuitry, and a computer to create new ways of playing old games.

You can keep it simple and have a go at reverse engineering your own joystick or any of the other classic arcade controllers. Or take on the challenge to make something new to refresh an old game!

Ages 6 and up welcome, all children under the age of 18 will need their parent or guardian to attend with them during the workshop.

IMPORTANT: We will be supplying the materials, tools and MakeyMakey kits for the event but you will need to bring along a laptop to run your game of choice.

Book Now!

Entry is free. But places are limited – please book in advance!

The workshop runs for 2 hours, there are two sessions on...
Friday 27th - 10:00am-12:00pm/14:00pm-16:00pm and one on Saturday 28th -10:00am-12:00pm. Please try to get to the venue 15 minutes before the workshop starts!
