Yes, the meetups are free. My intention for the meetups is to be a forum for people interested in t'ai chi to meet and exchange ideas and also to give total beginners a little taste of what t'ai chi is all about and hopefully ignite their interest and passion for t'ai chi. It only makes sense that it should be free and I've always just "eaten" the cost of maintaining the website.
The classes are indeed a separate entity. Some members have requested more in-depth instruction, so it is available for those who want it.
If the classes the I offer don't work out for people, I'm happy to refer to other instructors in the Chicago area. There's a thread on the message board of schools in Chicago. It's short now, but hopefully will grow. Any instructor is welcome to post a brief introduction to their school.
