Volleyball - B/BB - Bluemont Park
If you’ve already learned the basics of volleyball and want to keep improving your skills while having fun, this event is for you! **How to find us:** Park in the South Bluemont Parking Area and walk toward the south end of the lot. Near the end, you’ll see a bridge on your left—cross it. We’ll be on the field to the left of the picnic pavilion. **Skill Level:** Advanced Beginner (click [here](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1PojSi4qdlRsv1msCHhvpQ43iDc4FfzQwpWCc3kafVMY/mobilebasic) for details). **Reminders** 1. Attendance: We’ve noticed that the waitlist is growing, so please make sure your name is on the Going list if you plan to play. Our number of nets is limited so this helps avoid too many rotations. If your name is on the list but you don’t show up, it will count as an absence according to Smiley Social rules. Please update your RSVP at least 12 hours in advance if your plans change. 2. Injuries: Play safely and be mindful of others on the court. Respect positions and avoid risky moves that could lead to injury. If you’re not sure the ball is yours, call it before going for it to avoid collisions. 3. Game Rules: Let’s follow the basic volleyball rules, especially the three-touch rule so we can play properly and improve as a team! **Smiley Social documents:** 1. While we do aim to play seriously and challenge ourselves, the focus is more on growth and enjoyment than simply winning at all costs. That’s why the title doesn’t include “competitive” or “social”—we want a healthy mix of both. We do expect a mindset geared toward learning and getting better over time. That said, this event isn’t intended for total beginners; an understanding of the game is expected so that everyone can contribute to meaningful and engaging matches. The host holds the right to remove you from the game if they believe that you are at a C level(absolute beginner). if you can't pass to the setter for example, you are a beginner. **Skill Level:** 1. **If you want to know your level, please see the link below:** [Smiley Social Volleyball Levels](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1PojSi4qdlRsv1msCHhvpQ43iDc4FfzQwpWCc3kafVMY/edit) **YouTube:** The games may be recorded and uploaded to our channel here: Let the host know if you have an issue with this. [Youtube](https://www.youtube.com/@mp02626) **ATTENDANCE:** **Player Selection:** Regulars > Your Vibe > Skills > \*Flaky-ratio (your attendance ratio) > New Members \*If you have attended 3 events and dropped 6, you may or may not be invited. Anyone with a Flaky-ratio -.50 or lower. If you have a recent no-show, you may not be invited. The host takes attendance very seriously. Please remove yourself from the event (if you can't make it) as early as possible to allow others to join. You will be marked as a ***no-show*** if you don't show up to the event. [Smiley Social Rules](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1HrG35p_0M08leRvCp8XWG3CMkr_GL928XFabl5T6Dvg/edit) **Q&A** *-Bringing your dog or cat is welcome and encouraged.* -Can I come if I don't know how to play? \*No, you may not. The host does teach a beginner's volleyball class that you may attend on Saturdays. -Can I be late or leave early? *The host expects you to be there **on time** and leave on time. If you need to come late or leave early, please let the host know ahead of time.* -Can I come even if I am not on the going list? \*No, sorry -How can I improve my Flaky-ration? *You can attend other Smiley events. Commit to showing up.* -Why are new members accepted last? *Because they are the most flaky.* -NO SMOKING (anything) **Smiley Social Important Links:** 1. Games Day!
Games Day!
Everyone is encouraged to get vaccinated, but not required. I just got mine. I don't want to get any of my friends sick! I will, however, be screening for a standard set of COVID symptoms. If you are showing any symptoms that could make people nervous, please postpone coming to the meetup till you're over it. While sneezing is not a COVID symptom, I think folks would rather not risk getting even a cold right now, so again please don't show up if this is the case, even if you're sure it is just an allergy. On the other hand, no masks are required, although feel free if it'd make you more comfortable. General day of games! Whatever folks feel like playing. Bring your own or learn a new one! If you want to play a longer game, you might want to propose it on the meetup discussion to judge interest. I'll have snacks and soda on hand. Additional snacks or soda welcome. We usually order out for dinner and then continue on till 10pm. The games we usually play tend towards those requiring more thinking than typical family or party games and they are usually in the 2-4 hour range. Photos from past meet ups can give you a sense of them. We do sometimes play lighter games though.
Rock Creek Park - Meadowbrook Park/Boundary Bridge, Moderate 5 Miles
Rock Creek Park - Meadowbrook Park/Boundary Bridge, Moderate 5 Miles
**This will be a moderate \~5 mile loop in Rock Creek Park. We will start at Meadowbrook Local Park in Chevy Chase, MD and proceed to the Boundary Bridge and into DC on the Valley Trail, cross Beach Dr to the Pinehurst Branch Trail, and loop back to our starting point on the Western Ridge Trail. It’s a beautiful walk with some ups and downs and a few stream crossings.** **Meeting Point:** **Meadowbrook Local park can be reached via Meadowbrook Lane and has space for about 30 cars. There are usually a variety of kids sports happening in the park so arrive early to find parking. There is another small lot accessible via Beach Dr. that fits about 6 cars. Cross the bridge to reach the park. Meet at the basketball courts, which are behind the stone pavilion and next to the tennis courts.** **Meeting Time:** **Plan to arrive at 9:15am so you will be able to meet everyone and sign the PATC waiver. Once the waiver is signed, we will begin the hike, targeting a 9:30am departure. We will leave on time.** **Route:** **Here is an AllTrails route in case you want to import this into a navigation device.** **https://www.alltrails.com/explore/custom-routes/rock-creek-meadowbrook-boundary-bridge-may-9-6e0b9a3?u=i&sh=fuqxr6** **Contact Info:** **Please use the comments feature for routine comments and questions, and to arrange carpools. Call/text the hike leader—Allison—if urgent for day-of** **questions or issues 202-320-6103** **Notes:** **RSVP here by 6pm the evening before. If you need to cancel, please change your RSVP by 6pm to allow others to move off the waiting list. Cancelling after 6pm may result in being designated a “no-show” which may affect your ability to sign up for future PATC hikes.** **Consider becoming a member of PATC to both enjoy the trails and support their maintenance. www.patc.net**

Embassy Day: Visit the European Embassies in DC!🌎🇫🇷🇬🇧🇪🇸🇮🇹🇩🇪
**Please read entire post!** Let's go to Europe Together! 🇫🇷🇩🇪🇮🇹🇪🇸 Join us for one of DC’s most exciting cultural events—Embassy Day. On May 9th, the European embassies open their doors to the public! Experience food, culture, music, and architecture from across Europe—all in one day. ⚠️ Important: You MUST Choose a Team Please use this sign up sheet to sign up for your TEAM: [https://grasshoppersignup.com/s/uukcb3](https://grasshoppersignup.com/s/uukcb3) To make the most of the day (and avoid long wait times), we’re organizing into four breakout teams, each starting at one of the most popular—and more distant—embassies: 🅰️ TEAM A **(arrive at 9:30am)** – France 🇫🇷 (Start your day here) Then continue to: Croatia 🇭🇷 Greece 🇬🇷 Estonia 🇪🇪 Latvia 🇱🇻 Portugal 🇵🇹 Bulgaria 🇧🇬 Luxembourg 🇱🇺 Cyprus 🇨🇾 🅱️ TEAM B **(arrive at 9:30am)**– Italy 🇮🇹 (Start your day here) Then continue to: Croatia 🇭🇷 Greece 🇬🇷 Estonia 🇪🇪 Latvia 🇱🇻 Portugal 🇵🇹 Bulgaria 🇧🇬 Luxembourg 🇱🇺 Cyprus 🇨🇾 🅲 TEAM C **(arrive at 9:30am)**– Germany 🇩🇪 (Start your day here) Then continue to: Croatia 🇭🇷 Greece 🇬🇷 Estonia 🇪🇪 Latvia 🇱🇻 Portugal 🇵🇹 Bulgaria 🇧🇬 Luxembourg 🇱🇺 Cyprus 🇨🇾 🅳 TEAM D **(arrive at 9:30am)** – Spain 🇪🇸 (Start your day here) Then continue to: Croatia 🇭🇷 Greece 🇬🇷 Estonia 🇪🇪 Latvia 🇱🇻 Portugal 🇵🇹 Bulgaria 🇧🇬 Luxembourg 🇱🇺 Cyprus 🇨🇾 🕘 Game Plan Each team will start in the morning at their starting embassy to beat the crowds. Its important that you arrive around 9:30 AM, because lines will start to form. After your starting location, you’ll follow your team route and explore the other embassies listed above. 🚗 Transportation Note Please Note: The embassies of France, Germany, Italy, and Spain embassies are farther away from the main cluster of embassies. We made them our starting embassies, because they usually have the longest lines, so if we start our day there, we can possibly avoid the lines, if we get there early enough. 🚕 We strongly recommend taking an Uber/Lyft to get from your starting embassy to the other embassies. 🚗 You can all share an Uber ride from the starting embassies and split the cost among each other. 📢For Example if you're starting off at the French embassy and you finish, then you will need to uber to downtown DC to visit all the other embassies on the list. ✅️These four embassies (France, Germany, Spain and Italy) are some of the most popular stops of the day. Starting early helps us avoid long lines and cover more ground. Let’s explore Europe right here in DC 💗

Speak Easy (Storytelling)
Speak Easy (Storytelling)
The topic for May is "Ink" Speak Easy: true stories, told live. The idea is simple: an audience, an open microphone, and great stories. Hilarious, gripping, poignant- it's up to you. Audiences are invited to come to listen or come to tell as folks from all corners of Columbus offer their stories live on stage! Held at Wild Goose Creative's warm, intimate space, this night of tales occurs on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Doors open at 6:30 pm, show starts at 7:00 pm. Please arrive early if you want to tell, as we generally only have room for a limited number of tellers, and the sign-up sheet has a tendency to fill up fast. Formed around the idea that people need stories--they're what hold and draw us together--SpeakEasy celebrates the strangeness and commonness of being human. And in a world of smartphones, Facebook, Twitter, and more . . . it gives people a real, breathing, in-person way to connect. The night is geared for true stories of all kinds, taking the best tales told around kitchen tables, in darkened pubs, on the street corner, and at late-night parties and giving them an audience. Speak Easy is also a great outlet for performers, writers, and artists looking to share their favorite stories and perfect their skills. We strongly encourage tellers to please tell the story rather than read it so we keep within the spirit of good storytelling and stay engaged with the audience. All are welcome. Hang around after the show for a drink and build community!
