Mount Everest Base Camp Trek
Mount Everest Base Camp Trek
**Everest Base Camp Trek** ***Why this trip is different than all the rest?*** * **You will actually get to spend the night at base camp! Not just hike there and leave. We have almost 2 days at camp scheduled.** * **We take a Helicopter ride down from base camp. You don’t have to spend the next 3-4 days retracing your steps.** * **We have someone else carry all of your gear on the mountain. You just carry your day pack with an extra layer, water and snacks.** * **We have 2 rest days scheduled for the trek to help with acclimatization.** * **We use experienced local guides from Nepal.** Your trek takes you to the foothills of the mightiest of mountains in the world. You will traverse through rhododendrons, pine forests, rivers, Sherpa villages, and Buddhist Monasteries. The Himalayas are best seen on this trek as we trace the main route through the Khumbu region from the Sherpa town of Namche Bazaar. Trekkers get a close view of the world's greatest mountains, Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Thamserku, Tawache, and others. The route also lies in the highest wildlife reserve in the world, the Sagarmatha National Park. It covers an area of 1,148 sq. km. of the Himalayan ecological zone. The park’s altitudes range from about 9,000 feet at Monju to the top of the world. UNESCO listed the park as a World Heritage Site in 1979 for its unique natural, cultural, and landscape characteristics. The name Khumbu comes from its guardian deity Khumbila Tetsan Gelbu. The literal translation is "Khumbu country god." The teachings of Sherpa Buddhism talk of a spiritual understanding between all beings. This is probably why the level of hospitality and acceptance of Westerners comes naturally to the Sherpa. VMO: AT Pearisburg to Daleville (93 miles)
VMO: AT Pearisburg to Daleville (93 miles)
The Baconator is thru hiking the AT this year, so I figured I would join him for a segment of trail that I haven't section hiked yet. Due to various car break-ins on US-211, I think it makes sense to repeat the highlights of the triple crown and go all of the way to Daleville instead of trying my luck on US-211. The logistics are to drive down near Daleville on Wednesday night and catch a shuttle to Pearisburg. Steve is currently passing through Damascus, so we have reasonable confidence in the start date. Tentative splits: 4/9 Dry tentsite at mile 651.5, 14 miles 4/10 Another dry tentsite at mile 666, 14.5 mi 4/11 Sarver Hollow Shelter (might be dry), 16.6 mi 4/12 Pickle Branch Shelter, 16.1 4/13 Pig Farm Campsite, 16.9 4/14 15mi back to the car at Daleville. **Driving:** I'm planning on using a commercial shuttle if I can get one. I have a car that I can drive to Daleville. Due to the length of the trip, we can't leave cars at a metro station. **Links:** Trailhead: TBD Pearisburg, VA Map: [Appalachian Trail Map (arcgis.com)](https://nps.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=6298c848ba2a490588b7f6d25453e4e0) **\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-THE IMPORTANT WARNINGS\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-** 1. As per our carpool policy, riders should plan to pay drivers $0.10/mile along with their share of the shuttle cost. **Dues** \-\- Members and above\, don't forget to pay your annual dues if you haven't yet\. If you don't see the current year listed next to your name in your DC UL profile\, please pay via PayPal: https://www\.paypal\.com/paypalme/JenniferAdach/15 \($10 annual dues plus a $5 suggested donation to City Kids Wilderness Project\.\) Applicants do not need to pay dues\. LM: Ramsay’s Draft
LM: Ramsay’s Draft
Hey, everyone! I’m going to cycle through some regional classics in the coming months as I come back from plantar fasciitis. So this is Ramsay’s Draft, a roughly 16-18 mile circuit described in my book under the Wild Oak chapter. In a nutshell, we’ll meet up Saturday morning at Vienna, rationalize cars, and drive out. We’ll hike along ridge line in the afternoon before reaching Hiner Springs, one of the higher campsites we routinely use in our area (it could be cool). Sunday, we’ll wake early and descend the draft, which will involve many, many water crossings before we regain the cars. Dry clothes. Pub. Home. I can take 10. The trip is ideal for new people. I will need a gear list, though. Join me. U-Turn 571-225-6763
