This discussion is of a category of moral questions, related to the autonomy and value of servant species. It was inspired by a question on philosophy stack exchange about House Elves in Harry Potter, but is a broader question, which applies to our domestication of animals, creation of AI, and possible genetic engineering. House Elves: In the Harry Potter story series, there is a race of creatures who are totally self-effacing, and want to do dirty clean-up work around a house. They work for free, and are very happy doing so. They can be “freed” by being given an article of clothing, but this leads to great distress among house elves, who see this as banishment. House elves, therefore, are happy slaves. I don’t know how happy horses and draft animals are to carry or pull stuff. Chickens and cows don’t actually do “work” for us, but they are pretty happy with pre-factory farm life. Are house elves a moral evil? Is animal domestication a moral evil? Could the answer be that domestication isn’t an evil (or not the primary evil), but how we treat the domestic animals might be? Capoeira (capo-way-ra) is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that is unlike any other martial art. Capoeira incorporates flowing movements with kicks, dodges, and some acrobatics. It is often mistaken for a dance for those reasons. Since it’s origins in the 17th century, it has evolved from a secret fighting practice into an art emphasizing self-expression and community celebration. It is great for the body and mind! In addition to gaining strength and flexibility in class, students learn about Brazilian culture, history, and language (Portuguese). On November 26, 2014 capoeira was granted a special protected status as "intangible cultural heritage” by UNESCO. Free Argentine Tango fundamentals classes weekly for OneLife McLean (Regency) members in McLean Virginia! Nonmembers may pay for the health club entrance at the door ($30) and use the club for the day, which includes the dance classes, use of the pool, weights, tennis, etc . . This series runs from 12 April through mid-June every Sunday 230-330. Following the tango class, there is a dance workout class from 330-430, also included.
