Subject: [hiking-160] New Meetup: Big Schloss Hike with a Winter Backpacking 101 Option on Saturday Night
Date: Mon, 6 Dec[masked]:50:44 -0500

Announcing a new Meetup for The Baltimore Hiking Meetup Group!

What: Big Schloss Hike with a Winter Backpacking 101 Option on Saturday Night

When: Sunday, December 12,[masked]:00 AM

Where: Big Schloss/Wolf Gap Campground
Wolf Gap Rd. and Trout Run Rd.
Edinburg, VA 22824

I am doing a Hike of Big Schloss on Sunday morning as the new bridge is finally finished to the overlook! Since it is December, assume it will be cold and windy with rain/snow possibility. Heavy rain will cancel, showers or snow will not. In addition, I will be conducting a winter backpacking 101 class on Saturday later afternoon/night after doing the Buzzard Hill hike with Dominic on Saturday morning, so the Backpacking 101 Class will start at 3PM on Saturday, December 11 as that is as quickly as I can get to Wolf Gap Campground where I will conduct the class and the trail head for Big Schloss Hike on Sunday. Please come prepared for wind, snow and rain, so good socks, boots, long johns and layers with a good rain coat, hat and gloves are essential. If you are coming for the Winter Backpacking 101, you must contact me prior to going so I can go over what you will need, such as a waterproof tent, sleeping bag rated to at least 5 degrees and what type of pack and cooking equipment you have. My cell is[masked]-4848. This is a classic hike with a great view. Trail description is here:

Elevation gain is only about 1000 feet and the length is 4 miles. We can do more by adding on Mill Mountain if we wish or Tibbett of my favorites as well, so lots of options. This is cross posted with the Washington Backpackers Meetup Group as well. So let's get out and have some fun...Mid-December Style...lots of wind, clouds, snow..maybe a little rain thrown in, and lots fresh air to get your cheeks rosy for Christmas!
