We are heading to Chinatown! Support local! Limited Time Only! Danny Bowienโs beloved San Francisco import is back for a spring and summer pop-up, after their drama-filled closure in 2022. They'll be serving classics from the original 2010 menuโand we hope that their kung pao pastrami, mapo tofu, and thrice cooked bacon will make the cut.
Akiko Thurnauer exudes effortless downtown cool vibes. For six days a week, the former graphic designer is the executive chef of Cha Kee in Manhattanโs Chinatown, where she puts together innovative Japanese-influenced Cantonese dishes. At Cha Kee, which opened in September, her soy milk-braised lettuce, a nod to a dish of napa cabbage softened in soy milk, which she perfected in the kitchen of Danny Bowienโs Mission Chinese Food, has turned skeptics of cooked lettuce into converts. We are heading to NYU! One of the toughest resys in town! Come for the food, stay for the dessert? Terry put me on to THIS DESSERT which will be optional but count me IN! Heard nothing but great things about this place. Lordโs is the grown-up sequel from Patricia Howard and Ed Szymanski of Dame where a nose-to-tail ethos pervades. The duo dives deep into housemade charcuterie, off-kilter English dishes, and bistro classics with the same playfulness and attention to detail that made Dame a runaway hit. Please be ON TIME!!! ๐
I finally made it to Lordโs โฆ
Dame is my favorite postage-stamp sized restaurant and Iโve been eager to try its more meat-forward sister. We sat at the bar and the restaurant was humming โ it feels vibrant and decadent, and we had the best time. My favorite dish totally surprised me: the smoked trout crudo is smoky and simultaneously really bright. That kicked off their Tale of Two Cities dinner series and had an amazing meal. The pork skin ragu was delicious and a journey in texture, the โnduja steamed mussels paired beautifully with the glass of cataratto recommended by their head sommelier, Max Eddy, and the fennel and pistachio cake was the perfect ending.
