My name is Erika, and I wanted to start a small online meet-up group that allows people a safe space to talk about their struggle with social anxiety while also conquering their fear of public speaking. Like you, I also have social anxiety, so we will be working on overcoming this together. This is an open environment that will allow you to freely express yourself and develop the confidence to speak out loud to others, so you no longer feel alone!
Who can join:
I think it helps to have a group where everyone feels the same way, so that we can relate to our anxieties and share our struggles and also any tips that we find beneficial. So, ideally, this is only a group for people who share similar issues and who are also truly supportive of one another.
This is my first go-around at this, so I have to face my own fears of awkwardness, but I think this will be therapeutic for all of us!
All group meetings will be done online via zoom. The meetings will last anywhere from 45 min - 1 hour. It depends on how many people plan to join. As of now, I am imagining smaller group sessions so people really get a chance to express themselves. I'm organizing the logistics as I go, as I get a better understanding of the flow.
Why are social anxiety support groups helpful?
Studies show that people who struggle with SAD don’t just benefit from support groups—many overcome it completely. That’s because support groups offer:
The realization that you’re not alone
The satisfaction of helping others
Feedback in real-time from people who understand you
Opportunities to practice social engagement
A cost-effective way to engage in therapy
How do I work up the courage to go?
Think about going to a meeting as a first step.
Remember, you’ll be with others who feel your pain.
Don’t fret about speaking up. Sit back, observe, and share when you’re ready.
