Too Old to Matter? Aging, Work, and Human Value in the Age of AI

Too Old to Matter? Aging, Work, and Human Value in the Age of AI

# Growing Old in a Society That Rewards Youth Growing old is a universal human experience, yet societies do not value every stage of life equally. Youth is often associated with beauty, energy, adaptability, learning, and future potential. Age, by contrast, is frequently connected with decline, dependence, and reduced possibilities. Young people are usually judged by what they may become. Their mistakes are seen as part of development, and their uncertainty is interpreted as potential. Older people are more often judged by what they can still do, how productive they remain, and how well they adapt to change. This is especially visible in the workplace. Experience has traditionally been valuable because it represents knowledge, practical judgment, and lessons accumulated over many years. Artificial intelligence may change this relationship. When AI can provide information, analysis, recommendations, and expert-like answers within seconds, some forms of professional experience may become less rare and therefore less economically valuable. This raises a difficult problem for older workers. Their remaining working years may already be viewed as limited, while the knowledge they have accumulated over decades may increasingly be reproduced or replaced by AI systems. AI may not eliminate the value of experience, but it can change which forms of experience society rewards. Information and routine expertise may lose value, while human judgment, responsibility, emotional understanding, creativity, and experience with complex social situations may become more important. Aging also challenges our ideas about independence and dignity. Modern societies often treat self-sufficiency as a condition of a successful life. When older people need support, they may fear losing control or becoming a burden. Yet needing help does not remove a person’s identity, dignity, memories, relationships, or ability to make meaningful decisions. This Meetup explores how youth, productivity, independence, experience, and artificial intelligence shape our understanding of human value. We will discuss: * Why does society associate youth with greater potential and value? * Does a person lose social recognition when they become less productive or independent? * Can AI reduce the professional and economic value of experience accumulated over many years? * Which forms of human experience, judgment, and understanding cannot be replaced by AI? * How should we define human value when youth, productivity, independence, and expertise are no longer guaranteed? 📅 Event Details 🗓️ Date: Saturday, 25July 2026 ⏰ Time: 14:00 📍 Location: Hardenbergstraße 10, 10623 Berlin 📱 WhatsApp: For preparation materials, updates, and directions, join the group chat. We meet and sketch each other in Berlin. This is just an art gym that we also exercise our social skills. Afterwards usually we go for lunch as a group. **How Does It Work?** This event is simple, we meet and sketch each other doing portraits. Most of the participants use pencils or watercolors. Main aim is to socialize while we draw. There will be plenty of time to talk and get to know each other. We have to mention that this event is suitable for all levels. Many have started to draw in our event actually. **Structure** A. Warmup Phase: We pose to each other for 1 minute. B. Main Phase: We pose to each other for 10 minutes. C. Showcase Phase: We show some of the drawings we did to each other. **Who We Are** Creative Sessions is an art events group located in Berlin. **Is it Free?** The event is free of charge. It is advisable to get a drink though. This is a cafe, we need to have at least half of the people on each table with a drink. They accept only cash and most hot drinks cost from 2.50 to 3.50. **How to help or donate?** The event is provided for free but many people help this be a regular thing. We also need people to volunteer and help for minor tasks like the serving of the drinks or cleaning up. Just send us a message. If you want to donate and keep this event from happening, via Paypal to the host (Miltos) : https://ko-fi.com/miltosthings/ **Art Materials?** Bring your own art materials. **Our Instagram Profile** Follow us on instagram @icreativesessions Use the hashtag #icreativesessions on your post description there to find out drawings from the event!

Uniquely Berlin: A Visit to Museum in der Kulturbrauerei

Uniquely Berlin: A Visit to Museum in der Kulturbrauerei

Sun, Jul 26, 12:00 PM
From Museum Sunday

Design and history nerds, this one's for you! This month we'll be visiting [Museum in der Kulturbrauerei](https://www.hdg.de/en/museum-in-der-kulturbrauerei). This free museum displays objects, art, and other artifacts of everyday living in Communist East Germany. Excited to see you there and to check it out! I've been digging around their poster [archive](https://sint.hdg.de/SINT5/SINT/query?wicket:interface=:3:27:::) and it looks incredible. If folks are interested, we can have a post-visit drink and chat at the nearby (and ironic!) Kapitalist.
