Chelsea Afternoon (New York Day Trip)

Chelsea Afternoon (New York Day Trip)

Sat, Sep 26, 5:00 PM
From Philadelphia Art Appreciation Meetup Group
4.8

I think a case can be made that the Chelsea area of Manhattan contains more galleries than anywhere else in the universe. (I'm making an assumption here that other intelligent life somewhere out there doesn't have "art" and "galleries" as we know them. :)) Whether or not the above is true, let's at least make a dent in the huge number of galleries in this neighborhood by starting in the middle and heading south. I'll work up a detailed and specific itinerary within the coming weeks, but let's say straight off that we'll meet at 1:00 at Jim Kempner Fine Art, a gallery on the Northwest corner of 23rd Street and 10th Avenue that is pretty much impossible to miss because looks like a multi-level contemporary house: https://www.jimkempnerfineart.com/ The first thing you encounter upon walking in is the sculpture garden: https://www.alamy.com/stock-photo-new-york-city-ny-usa-modern-architecture-art-jim-kempner-fine-art-50949706.html https://www.vaadia.com/exhibitions/jimkempner_2011.shtml So let's meet there unless it's raining or really hot, in which case, let's just go inside and meet on the first floor. Other places I'd like to include in the day's outing are Little Island, Pier 57, the Highline (which the photo in this posting is taken from), and, if people are really interested, Hudson Yards. I will probably be sticking around to attend the Brooklyn Book Festival the next day and can help people get to trains and busses if that's wanted or needed. :) More to come!

[NYC] Painting Workshop: Florals Inspired by O’Keeffe

[NYC] Painting Workshop: Florals Inspired by O’Keeffe

Tue, Sep 15, 6:00 PM
From Chapter Community: A Group for Retirees and Beyond
4.5

**Join us to learn about O'Keefe and create your own abstract flower paintings.** Georgia O’Keeffe’s striking flower paintings are a powerful reminder to appreciate the beauty in the little things, even during the most chaotic times. She paved the way as the foremother of the feminist art movement and holds the record for the most expensive work ever sold by a female artist. Learn about the inspiration behind O’Keeffe’s work and create your own abstract flower paintings. **What to expect:** The 2 hour session will include a brief art history lesson, followed by painting. No experience necessary. All painting materials with be provided. **Please note:** Space is limited to 10 participants, so save your spot early. There's a $10 reservation fee for this event. With just 10 spots and materials prepared for the session, it helps us make sure everyone who signs up shows up ready to paint! -- *This event is part of the Chapter Community, a space for people in or approaching retirement to connect, explore, and try new things, together. We kindly ask that participation be limited to this community, so the space can stay true to its mission.*

Hidden Patterns: The Visual Journey of Networks

Hidden Patterns: The Visual Journey of Networks

Wed, Sep 23, 11:00 PM
From Startup Grind NYC
4.7

Have you ever wondered why one startup, one tweet, or one node in your product's user graph explodes while a thousand identical-looking others don't? You've already run into **[Albert-László Barabási](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert-L%C3%A1szl%C3%B3_Barab%C3%A1si)**'s work, whether you knew his name or not. He's the physicist who discovered **[scale-free networks](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scale-free_network)**: the finding that most real networks, from the web to your own social graph, run on a small number of massive hubs instead of evenly spread connections. That's the math behind **preferential attachment**, and it's why the web, social networks, and citation networks all follow the same power law. In collaboration with the **[National Arts Club](https://www.nacnyc.org/)** and its **[Art and Technology Committee](https://www.nacnyc.org/arts-and-programs/committees)**, Barabási will walk through 25 years spent turning that math into something you can look at. **[BarabásiLab's work](https://barabasi.com/)** has moved from raw data visualizations to physical, 3D-printed network sculptures, and from academic papers to museum installations. The current centerpiece is **[Constructing La Biennale](https://www.labiennale.org/en/architecture/2025/living-lab/constructing-la-biennale)**, a 30-by-8-meter data visualization wrapped around the scaffolding of the Central Pavilion at the **2025 Venice Architecture Biennale**. It maps roughly 12,000 architects and 3,800 projects across the Biennale's 45-year history, back to its first edition in 1980, as a single connected graph. Barabási has called it **the most visible work at the Biennale**, and building it, in his words, "*was a massive data science project*." If your product, your portfolio, or your own career runs on network effects, **this is a rare chance to hear from the person who wrote the math for it**. Reserve your spot and arrive early. **Space is limited.**
