Chelsea Afternoon (New York Day Trip)
Sat, Sep 26, 5:00 PMI think a case can be made that the Chelsea area of Manhattan contains more galleries than anywhere else in the universe. (I'm making an assumption here that other intelligent life somewhere out there doesn't have "art" and "galleries" as we know them. :)) Whether or not the above is true, let's at least make a dent in the huge number of galleries in this neighborhood by starting in the middle and heading south. I'll work up a detailed and specific itinerary within the coming weeks, but let's say straight off that we'll meet at 1:00 at Jim Kempner Fine Art, a gallery on the Northwest corner of 23rd Street and 10th Avenue that is pretty much impossible to miss because looks like a multi-level contemporary house: https://www.jimkempnerfineart.com/ The first thing you encounter upon walking in is the sculpture garden: https://www.alamy.com/stock-photo-new-york-city-ny-usa-modern-architecture-art-jim-kempner-fine-art-50949706.html https://www.vaadia.com/exhibitions/jimkempner_2011.shtml So let's meet there unless it's raining or really hot, in which case, let's just go inside and meet on the first floor. Other places I'd like to include in the day's outing are Little Island, Pier 57, the Highline (which the photo in this posting is taken from), and, if people are really interested, Hudson Yards. I will probably be sticking around to attend the Brooklyn Book Festival the next day and can help people get to trains and busses if that's wanted or needed. :) More to come!

Hidden Patterns: The Visual Journey of Networks
Wed, Sep 23, 11:00 PMHave you ever wondered why one startup, one tweet, or one node in your product's user graph explodes while a thousand identical-looking others don't? You've already run into **[Albert-László Barabási](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert-L%C3%A1szl%C3%B3_Barab%C3%A1si)**'s work, whether you knew his name or not. He's the physicist who discovered **[scale-free networks](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scale-free_network)**: the finding that most real networks, from the web to your own social graph, run on a small number of massive hubs instead of evenly spread connections. That's the math behind **preferential attachment**, and it's why the web, social networks, and citation networks all follow the same power law. In collaboration with the **[National Arts Club](https://www.nacnyc.org/)** and its **[Art and Technology Committee](https://www.nacnyc.org/arts-and-programs/committees)**, Barabási will walk through 25 years spent turning that math into something you can look at. **[BarabásiLab's work](https://barabasi.com/)** has moved from raw data visualizations to physical, 3D-printed network sculptures, and from academic papers to museum installations. The current centerpiece is **[Constructing La Biennale](https://www.labiennale.org/en/architecture/2025/living-lab/constructing-la-biennale)**, a 30-by-8-meter data visualization wrapped around the scaffolding of the Central Pavilion at the **2025 Venice Architecture Biennale**. It maps roughly 12,000 architects and 3,800 projects across the Biennale's 45-year history, back to its first edition in 1980, as a single connected graph. Barabási has called it **the most visible work at the Biennale**, and building it, in his words, "*was a massive data science project*." If your product, your portfolio, or your own career runs on network effects, **this is a rare chance to hear from the person who wrote the math for it**. Reserve your spot and arrive early. **Space is limited.**

All-New Fall Chelsea Art Gallery Walk
Sat, Oct 3, 3:00 PMI hope you are having a wonderful Summer so far. Please join us for the first art gallery MeetUp walk of this Fall on 10/03/26 at 11 AM. Chelsea is about to have dozens of openings starting on September 10th. This walk includes new solo shows by international artists, including painting, sculpture, photography, and more as available. Join us as we explore a fantastic museum-quality show of sculptures and others works by Lynda Benglis, spanning five decades of her career. Benglis broke new ground in 1968 by pouring latex on the floor of her studio, essentially blurring the lines between painting and sculpture. At Gagosian, we will explore a superb Brice Marden retrospective, including works on loan from major institutions. We will explore why Marden is viewed as a highly influential abstract artist whose work is Minimalist yet deeply humanistic. Please note $35 early bird pricing up to 2 weeks prior to the walk.

Tue, Sep 22, 11:00 PMJoin us for an evening of drawing from a live model. [Purchase Tickets here, $27 (use discount code DRAWWITHUS for your first visit)](https://calendly.com/harveststrength/bodies-of-work-figure-drawing) **Bodies of Work** is a figure drawing series focused on celebrating the dynamic human body. We're fascinated with how the body works, and we feel like you just might be too. We work with models who have a physical practice: boxers, climbers, dancers, lifters, athletes. Poses are directed to put the body's mechanics on display. This event is hosted by Dan Boterashvili of Harvest Strength Training, a personal trainer and visual artist, alongside Alexander Singer, community engagement professional and bartender. [Purchase Tickets here, $27 (use discount code DRAWWITHUS for your first visit)](https://calendly.com/harveststrength/bodies-of-work-figure-drawing) Bring your favorite materials and drawing/painting supplies. We will also be providing basic materials and a limited amount of drawing boards. **Every experience level welcome, first-timers welcomed.** **Doors open at 6:40pm. Poses run 7:00–9:30pm**, from short gestures to long holds. Stick around after to share work and meet other artists. Note: Doors will be kept open until 7:15. If for some reason you are delayed please reach out to @bodiesofworkdrawing on Instagram and we will come downstairs to let you in. We have a **STRICT NO PHOTO** policy while the model is posing. Keep your phones in your bag or keep them pointed away from the model. If you see someone photographing the model please inform either Dan or Alexander and we will handle it. Tickets are nonrefundable after purchase. If a session is canceled by Bodies of Work, ticket holders will be offered a refund or transfer to another session.
