Highgate - BRAND NEW WALK 'A Step back in time delightful Walk!

Some amazing highlights on the walk include the stunning, old quaint village of Highgate, story of a ghost of an animal, the homes and former homes of George Michael, Sting, Kate Moss, Jamie Oliver, Jude Law, Terry Gilliam and Graham Chapman from Monty Phython, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, where Charles Dickens stayed, where Dick Whittington returned to London after hearing the bow bells, a break at a lovely cafe in a wonderful, delightful park. It truely is an amazing walk, the walk does not enter Highgate Cemetery as there are cost, but through the railings we can see the grave of Karl Marx WHERE TO MEET - Please meet outside the front of 'Jacksons Lane Arts Centre' which is on the opposite side of the road from Highgate Station. If coming by Highgate Underground Station (Northern Line) please follow the 'Exit 3 Escalator to Archway Road' sign. The Haunting of Hill House *by Shirley Jackson is a 1959 gothic horror novel about a notoriously isolated mansion that preys upon the fragile minds of a small group of paranormal investigators.* If you've been before and would like to help pay for the Meetup group, you can contribute "£1-2" per meeting (now collected around Dec & Jun). This optional payment does not apply to your first meeting and no-one is turned away for lack of funds. General plan: by 7pm some of us should be in the upstairs room at the pub but we usually start by discussing books to read in future in case anyone arrives late. Typically we'll talk about the book until after 8pm, when there's a short break to go to the bar, then any further discussion till after 9, though of course you can leave at any point. The dreaded sun is defeated, and the moon takes her rightful throne. The citizens of London draw closed their curtains as dark-winged omens fill the sky. Three wooden knocks are heard as you walk past the churchyard, and the ticking of a clock slows to a stop. Come one, come all, to your doom… **…it’s the SMFC Halloween pub crawl! 👻🎃💀🪦** After two consecutive hauntings with the ghosts of the Square Mile, we still have much yet to discover about deathlore (the folklore of death), with its symbols, omens, characters and popular customs. Such as: -Which tube station to head to to catch your train to the underworld? -What city animals are trying to warn you of your impending doom? -What should you wear for the most bewitching corpse photo? -What symbols should you carve on your headstone to fill your enemies with fear? -Is there any part of London that isn’t a plague pit, actually? Join us for an eerie walk through the folklore of death, featuring: -Burial grounds and haunted locations -Ghosts, revenants and cryptids -Optional games, challenges and prizes -Omens, rituals, customs, characters, symbols and more -And of course…pubs! Route is being finalised so the starting point will be updated in the coming weeks, but it will be in central London. Some important information: -Attendants must be over 18, no exceptions. Please bring valid ID. -We will be doing a lot of walking, so please wear comfy footwear and warm clothes. -We may be using some public transport on the day where it's efficient to do so, so please ensure you arrive with a topped up oyster card or contactless card. -Eat beforehand! Day trip by coach - Coastal hike, three towns & mini steam train! (NOW FULL)

Come along on Saturday 26th September to visit the Kent coast for a 5 mile hike, visit three towns and ride the mini steam train! **About the day** We will be heading to the Kent coast to the town of Hythe, then walk 5 miles along the coast to Dymchurch, before catching the mini steam train to Dungeness. We will be able to spend some time in all three towns. **Hythe** Hythe is an old market town with both medieval and Georgian buildings, as well as a Saxon/Norman church on the hill. Its seafront is mainly Victorian. It offers stunning views across Southampton Water and is known for its historic pier. We will then walk 5 miles along the coast to Dymchurch (alternatively, you can catch a local bus number 102 to Dymchurch). **Dymchurch** Dymchurch sits at the very edge of the Romney Marshes and played a vital role in defending the coastline, with the Martello Towers and Dymchurch Wall forming part of the Napoleonic sea defences. It has a sand and shingle beach. **Mini Steam Train** From Dymchurch, we will then get the mini steam train to Dungeness. Opening in 1927, the track runs parallel to the coast on a gauge of 15 inches (380 mm). **Dungeness** Dungeness is a unique headland on the coast of Kent, famous as Britain's only desert due to its vast, windswept shingle landscape. It has a collection of old fishing houses and their boats are still visible on the shingle. All four passengers must travel together, sit together where possible, and pass through the barriers together. You may join the group en route, for example at Clapham Junction or East Croydon, but you must have your own valid ticket to pass through the barriers. The organiser will try to arrange groups of four based on attendees’ travel plans. The tickets will be distributed at the end of the hike, allowing people to travel home together or stay a little longer at the pub. ***Note:*** *This group-ticket option is only suitable if you plan to walk with the main group. Tim's Walks: Victorian Philanthropy in the East End

Join Tim on a walk through the historic East End of Whitechapel and Stepney. At the end of the nineteenth century this was notorious as the poorest part of London. It was 'the ghetto', 'the abyss'. But it was also the centre of some of the great philanthropic movements of the time. Two of our greatest charities, the Salvation Army and Barnardo's, were set up within a few hundred yards of each other. Immigrant groups created self-help groups and wealthy benefactors built social housing for the poor. This is an astonishing walk through the heart of the old East End full of history and with some of the most extraordinary sights to be found in London from a Norman church to a 400 year old Jewish cemetery. 'The London of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle & Sherlock Holmes' Guided Walk

Come along on Sunday 27th September for a Blue Badge Guided Walk on Sherlock Holmes and his creator; Sir Arthur Conan Doyle! Blue Badge Guides know London better than anyone. They have trained intensively for two years and passed the highest Tourist Guiding qualification in the UK. **About the walk** Travel back to the London of fogs and horse drawn cabs as we follow the footsteps of Sherlock Holmes and his creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. We will start in elegant St James’s, home to the “Diogenes Club” frequented by Mycroft Holmes and take in several locations mentioned in the novels and short stories featuring Doyle’s famous fictional detective. An embassy, hotels, historic shops, the home of the Metropolitan Police and a library all feature. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was a Scottish writer and physician most noted for his fictional stories about the detective Sherlock Holmes. Holmes made his first appearance in 'A Study of Scarlet', published in 'Beeton's Christmas Annual' in 1887. Its success encouraged Conan Doyle to write more stories involving Holmes but, in 1893, Conan Doyle killed off Holmes, hoping to concentrate on more serious writing. A public outcry later made him resurrect Holmes. In addition, Conan Doyle wrote a number of other novels, including 'The Lost World' and various non-fictional works.
