Special Day - Stunning, beautiful walk & a unique visit to the House Of Dreams!

**NEW WALK Hi all, cost & info below.** **This walk is only once every 2 years.** Please note approx 20-25 members will be on the walk, not what is advertised, as only half the members turn up with most meetup groups. Please join everyone for a fun linear, healthy, scenic 4.5 mile walk with some brief local info along the way while meeting new friends! ***Highlights are*** a unique opportunity as a meetup group to see 'The House Of Dreams' (pictured), an outstanding private home that has appeared on countless documentaries and main news programs. The House of Dreams has been bequeathed to the National Trust and the National Trust works closely with Stephen. There is usually a charge of £12 per person but we have a discount so it's £10 per person! The dreaded sun is defeated, and the moon takes her rightful throne. The citizens of London draw closed their curtains as dark-winged omens fill the sky. Three wooden knocks are heard as you walk past the churchyard, and the ticking of a clock slows to a stop. Come one, come all, to your doom… **…it’s the SMFC Halloween pub crawl! 👻🎃💀🪦** After two consecutive hauntings with the ghosts of the Square Mile, we still have much yet to discover about deathlore (the folklore of death), with its symbols, omens, characters and popular customs. Such as: -Which tube station to head to to catch your train to the underworld? -What city animals are trying to warn you of your impending doom? -What should you wear for the most bewitching corpse photo? -What symbols should you carve on your headstone to fill your enemies with fear? -Is there any part of London that isn’t a plague pit, actually? Join us for an eerie walk through the folklore of death, featuring: -Burial grounds and haunted locations -Ghosts, revenants and cryptids -Optional games, challenges and prizes -Omens, rituals, customs, characters, symbols and more -And of course…pubs! Route is being finalised so the starting point will be updated in the coming weeks, but it will be in central London. Some important information: -Attendants must be over 18, no exceptions. **Join us for a coffee in Oxleas Wood, then a short stroll through the woods to Severndroog Castle and its viewing platform, and finishing up in a nearby pub.** Severndroog Castle is an 18th-century Gothic tower nestled in the ancient woodland of Shooter’s Hill, southeast London. With its striking architecture, rich history and far-reaching rooftop views, it is a rare Georgian folly open to the public.The ‘castle’ was commissioned by Lady James, probably as a memorial to her husband, and designed by architect Richard Jupp in 1784. Come along on Wednesday 7th October for a tour of the Barings Bank art collection and archive! **About the collection & Barings Bank** Barings Bank was a British merchant bank based in London, and the world's second oldest merchant bank. It was founded in 1762 and was owned by the German-originated Baring family of merchants and bankers. The bank collapsed in 1995 after suffering losses of £827 million resulting from poor speculative investments, primarily in futures contracts, conducted by its employee Nick Leeson, working at its office in Singapore. The story was turned into a film called *'Rogue Trader'*, which came out in 1999. The Dutch bank ING, purchased Barings Bank in 1995 for the nominal sum of £1. The purchase included Barings extensive art collection and historical documents going back to its formation in 1762. We will have a 2 hour curator guided tour of the art that ING purchased from Barings. It is situated in the companies hallways and meeting rooms. **Please note: there is a limit on how many people we can take on the tour, so I will randomly draw 20 names out from the list of RSVP's 10 days before the visit. ***🕯️ A spooky Halloween light trail filled with spooky fun in the enchanting Royal Botanic Gardens...*** 👋 **Hi everybody!** We’re meeting up for a hauntingly beautiful evening out at **Halloween at Kew** where we will explore the famous **Royal Botanic Gardens** after dark, completely transformed into a spectacular **1.5km illuminated trail**. The place will be packed with **moody light projections**, **fire performers**, and **hidden spooky surprises**. We will be walking a 1.5-hour outdoor trail together through different themed scare zones—including **Dracula's Lair**, **a Cursed Tomb**, and a **Medieval Dungeon**. Along the way, we can also grab **seasonal snacks** like **hot chocolate**, **hot toddies**, and **marshmallows** to roast over open fire pits. 🐉 (Halloween Special) Glastonbury – Climb the Tor & Watch the Dragons Battle

################# **Come and join us for a special day in Glastonbury! We'll enjoy some easy hiking while exploring the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which was later adopted by Christians and became Halloween.** **The [Samhain procession](https://www.facebook.com/GlastonburyDragons) attracts many visitors to Glastonbury, featuring drummers, dancers and a parade led by two huge dragons – one red and one white! Samhain is a very important date in the Pagan calendar, marking the division of the year between the lighter half (summer) and the darker half (winter). Pagans believed that during Samhain, the veil between this world and the otherworld was at its thinnest, allowing spirits to pass through.** ################# Come and join us on a trip to **Glastonbury**, possibly the quirkiest town in England, and home to the famous **Glastonbury Music Festival**! This city is at fascinating crossroads of various religions and spiritualities, from Christianity and paganism, to Druidism and witchcraft, and is unusually rich in legends and mythology. **Glastonbury Tor**, which we're going to climb, took centre stage in the opening ceremony of the **London 2012 Olympic Games**, celebrating the “idyllic, mythical England”. Our **4-mile route** will follow the **Glastonbury Way** around the town and its beautiful landscape, taking in the most significant places. We’ll also visit the beautiful **White Spring** **temple** at the base of Glastonbury Tor (free entry). Candle-lit and atmospheric, it is a unique and sacred space long cherished by pilgrims and local people, and commonly used for quiet reflection, ceremonies and meditation. Opposite the White Spring are the peaceful, sunlit gardens of **Chalice Well** and the **Red Spring**, which you’re also welcome to visit for a small entry fee. After the hike, you’ll have free time to explore **Glastonbury’s weird and wonderful shops**. This is the perfect place to browse for crystals (and learn about their healing properties), tarot cards, jewellery, lotions and potions, incense, herbs – and even wizard hats and magic wands! 🌟🔮🃏The town is also home to more than **50 spectacular pieces of street art**, with colourful murals decorating the city centre and adding to Glastonbury’s vibrant, creative atmosphere. **This trip is suitable for BEGINNERS** – a great way to experience hiking before joining our more difficult trips! 🤩 **ITINERARY** **07:45** Meet outside Hotel Novotel London West, 1 Shortlands, W6 8DR (a five-minute walk from Hammersmith Station) **08:00** Sharp departure **11:15-14:00** Hike to Glastonbury Tor, 2000-year-old oak trees of Gog and Magog and the White Spring **14:00-15:00** Free time for lunch and to explore Glastonbury's quirky shops **15:00** Border Morris (energetic English folk dance) at the Market Cross **16:00** Procession starts. The Glastonbury Red and White Dragons joined by Dragon Drummers will process down Glastonbury High Street to the Market Cross, where the Glastonbury Dragons will “battle for the season”. Below are the most famous ones. *Jesus and Joseph of Arimathea* Jesus is said to have come to Glastonbury as a boy, travelling here with his uncle, Joseph of Arimathea. Joseph was a tin merchant and had travelled to England's south west for this valuable metal. After the crucifixion of Jesus, Joseph travelled to Britain with the Holy Grail (the cup used by Jesus at the Last Supper), which he buried under Glastonbury Tor. *The Holy Thorn* Joseph is said to have arrived in Glastonbury by boat over the flooded Somerset Levels. On arriving, he climbed up Wearyall Hill (a 15-minute walk from Glastonbury centre). Exhausted, he thrust his staff into the ground and rested. By morning his staff had taken root and grown into a miraculous thorn tree, known as the Holy Thorn. A flowering sprig of the Holy Thorn is cut every year and presented to the monarch, where it resides on his Christmas Day breakfast table. *The Isle of Avalon and King Arthur* For many people, Glastonbury represents the Isle of Avalon, the mythical island of Celtic tradition, believed to be a gateway to the underworld. Canary Wharf to Walthamstow: Wetlands, Docks, Mills & Hidden London

**DESCRIPTION** Join us for a varied East London hike taking us from the skyscrapers of Canary Wharf through a surprisingly green and historic side of London, finishing in Walthamstow. We’ll follow waterways, docks and old industrial landscapes through Eden Dock and Limehouse, passing the historic House Mill and Three Mills before heading into the Olympic park and Lea Valley and across Hackney Marshes. From there we’ll continue towards the beautiful Walthamstow Wetlands before finishing at Big Penny Social in Walthamstow, where we can stop for a well-earned drink and/or food. Expect a mixture of canals, riverside paths, marshland, wetlands, industrial heritage and some of London’s less obvious green spaces, with plenty to see along the way.
