3D Print Your Next Project! (Contour 3D) + Duplex (Zahir Hussain)

Sat, Jul 11, 3:30 AM
From Property Developer Network (Sydney)
4.7

**\*\*\*RSVP PROCESS - CRITICAL INFO\*\*\*** Please be aware, we don't use the Meetup website to take RSVPs, so you will need to register on this link to lock in your place (bookings essential) - [https://propdev.info/uMvs](https://propdev.info/uMvs) We run events most weekends around Australia so you can attend either physically in your local area, or live-stream to any event around the country. **In-Person:** 1:30pm (Sydney time) to 'Mingle With The Expert' **Virtual:** 2pm (Sydney time) **INTRODUCING THE INDUSTRY EXPERT:** *3D Print Your Next Project! Contour 3D (Nick Holden)* If you’ve ever looked at a construction project and thought, “There has to be a faster, cheaper way to build this…” … you’re not alone. For many small to medium property developers, rising construction costs, labour shortages, project delays, and shrinking margins are making development projects harder than ever to deliver profitably. A project can stack up on paper… until builder availability becomes an issue, costs blow out, and timelines stretch months beyond expectations. What makes it worse is that most developers have little visibility into the technologies that are rapidly changing the future of construction. As a result, many developers continue using traditional building methods without understanding what alternatives are emerging… and how they could create a competitive advantage. At our next Property Developer Network Sunday Session, **Nick Holden** from **Contour 3D** will explore one of the biggest innovations the building industry has seen in decades: 3D-printed construction. Nick will cover: • How 3D-printed construction actually works • The technology behind Contour 3D's building systems • The benefits and limitations of 3D-printed homes • How automation is changing construction delivery • The potential impact on costs, labour, and project timelines • What property developers need to know about the future of building This is a fascinating opportunity to get an inside look at the next generation of construction technology and understand how it could reshape the way development projects are delivered. If you want to stay ahead of industry change and understand what's coming next in residential construction, don't miss this session. **INTRODUCING THE REAL DEAL:** 𝘋𝘶𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘹 (𝘡𝘢𝘩𝘪𝘳 𝘏𝘶𝘴𝘴𝘢𝘪𝘯) 𝟨𝟢𝟢𝘮𝟤,𝘙𝟤, 𝘙𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘯𝘦, 𝘕𝘦𝘸 𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘩 𝘞𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘴 You've found a promising site. The feasibility looks solid. The market is moving in the right direction. Everything appears to be lining up for a successful duplex project. Then reality kicks in. Council approvals take longer than expected. The design process becomes more complicated. Site works cost more than anticipated. Retaining walls, cut and fill, consultant challenges and delays start eating into your timeline and budget. If you've ever experienced unexpected hurdles during a development, you're not alone. That's exactly what 𝗭𝗮𝗵𝗶𝗿 𝗛𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗶𝗻 faced on this 𝗗𝘂𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘅 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁. The difference? He didn't panic when things became more difficult than expected. He stayed focused on the market, managed the challenges as they arose, and kept his eye firmly on the end result. Despite the setbacks, Zahir successfully navigated the project and achieved a profitable exit. In this session, Zahir will walk you through: • The key challenges that turned a straightforward duplex into a more complex project • Lessons learned from a difficult DA process and extended timelines • The risks of relying too heavily on a single consultant or designer • How underestimated site costs impacted the project and what he'd do differently next time • Why actively monitoring the market helped protect the project's profitability If you're planning a duplex, subdivision or small-scale development, this Real Deal presentation will give you a genuine look at what happens when a project doesn't go exactly as planned and how to successfully work through it. Practical. Honest. Packed with lessons from the real world. ***A session you don’t want to Miss!*** ***Join us for this event and progress your property journey forward in our very unique Mastermind process!*** See you all soon!

2600 Meetings exist as a forum for all interested in technology to meet and talk about events in technology-land, learn, and teach. Meetings are open to anyone of any age or level of expertise. The 2600 Australia chapter became prominent in 1999, bringing together people interested in computer security, electronic gadgetry, communications, privacy, and technology exploration in general. In addition to bringing these people together with meetings, mailing lists and seminars, we spoke up on issues such as Internet Censorship, Cybercrime, DVD encryption, and many other issues. Since then, many of the original members have moved on to new projects, however the 2600 Australia movement is still alive, with many new (and original) members active within the online community and monthly meetings, along with the occasional visitor from 2600's international chapters. Current projects and ongoing discussions: * Satelite hacking * Metadata, Privacy & Anonymity * Decentralised Networks * 3D Printing/Manufacturing/other hacking stuff * Programming for fun and proffit * Drones and other similar stuff

Enshittification and the Power of Platforms: Is There a Way Out?

Enshittification and the Power of Platforms: Is There a Way Out?

Mon, Jul 6, 8:30 AM
From The BIG IDEAS Book Club
4.7

Ever wonder why so many digital services you rely on seem to be getting simultaneously worse and more expensive? More ads. Sponsored search results. Subscription creep. Auto‑renew traps. Dubious 'surge' charges. Sneaky fees. Forced sign-ins. Cancel buttons hidden. There's a term for this phenomenon: enshittification — the gradual degradation of platforms that once seemed like technological miracles offering us convenience, connection, and democratisation. But enshittification - the Macquarie Dictionary’s Word of the Year for 2024 - is just the surface symptom of something far more corrosive. Beneath the declining user experience lies a fundamental reshaping of our economy where a handful of tech platforms have positioned themselves as inescapable gatekeepers, extracting unprecedented wealth from workers, businesses, and consumers while accumulating dangerous concentrations of power — what some are now calling technofeudalism. What happened to the internet's promise of widespread prosperity and a stronger democracy? How did we end up locked into systems that seem designed to serve everyone except us? And most importantly: what can we do about it? Come join us for a vital conversation about reclaiming our digital future and building an economy that works for everyone, not just the platform owners. **Book: *Enshittification – Why Everything Suddenly Got Worse and What to Do About It* (2025) by Cory Doctorow** **Book (Alternative): *The Age of Extraction – How Tech Platforms Conquered the Economy and Threaten Our Future Prosperity* (2025) by Tim Wu** **Pdf Resource:** ***[Infographics and Summary Tables](https://1drv.ms/b/c/adb4f7488b2eef0a/IQB0CITwHhHJSaFBbJDhZmMEAcDSAace_BN1Q6aSYILezCI?e=edqfP9)*** (A prepared document of selected ideas from the two books) This month you have two options to read depending on your preference towards the level of analysis, style of writing, and your ease in accessing the book. *Enshittification: Why Everything Suddenly Got Worse and What to Do About It* by Cory Doctorow is a punchy, provocative, and highly readable take on why so many digital platforms seem to decline over time. Doctorow, who coined the term ‘enshittification’, argues that platforms follow a predictable lifecycle—starting out user-focused, then shifting to business customers, and finally extracting for themselves—in each stage squeezing the group it previously courted. The book is fast-paced, example-rich, and written in an accessible, almost conversational style, making it ideal if you enjoy sharp arguments, memorable concepts, and contemporary tech critique. It’s particularly appealing for readers who like books that spark immediate reactions and connect directly to everyday experiences online. *The Age of Extraction* by Tim Wu takes a broader, more analytical approach. Wu situates the problems of digital platforms within a larger historical and economic pattern, arguing that we are living in an “age of extraction” where powerful actors systematically draw value from users, workers, and society. The tone is more measured and reflective, with a focus on big-picture thinking and long-term trends. This book will appeal to readers who enjoy connecting ideas across economics, history, and politics, and who prefer a more structured, conceptual framework over a punchy polemic. Please read one (or both), depending on your interests. *The Age of Extraction* is 226 pages (or 6 hours) and *Enshittification* is 340 pages (or 10 hours, not available on Audible but is available on other platforms). Join us for a drink (and optional meal) at 6:30pm on Monday, 6th July, on the 2nd floor of the Keg & Brew Hotel in Surrey Hills (i.e. up two flights of stairs). The venue is conveniently located near Central Station and the Light Rail. Bring along an example of an app or digital service you used to really like that has since become enshittified—something you can have a quick rant about to kick off the conversation! 😊 Hope to see you there! P.S. Please adjust your RSVP if you have indicated that you will come but are no longer able to do so. This is courteous to other people if there is a waitlist. \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\- These are just optional links to consider to supplement the reading of the books. Feel free to pass on other useful links in the discussion section. **Videos & Podcasts** * Two-for-one: Cory Doctorow and Tim Wu together!
