Los Angeles Maker Faire

LA’s largest celebration of science, creativity, invention and fun will be **free** and open to the public with hands-on activities, and amazing experiences. The **Los Angeles Maker Faire**, the region’s largest gathering of creative thinkers and doers, and **City of STEM**, LA‘s biggest festival of science, technology, engineering and math, will both be taking place at the same time and the same place, for one huge all-day extravaganza. This mega event will feature exhibits highlighting organizations and innovators – including scientists, engineers, artists, major museums and tech companies – who will showcase hands-on activities and unique experiences for adults, teens, and kids. **May Day Edition** \- We will **NOT** be doing the meeting at 310 Coffee we will be doing something to support the Workers and No Kings movements, more information to come. We are a community of **artists, thinkers, technicians, and curious minds** from all walks of life exploring how technology can serve human flourishing in 2026! Whether if you're an AI enthusiast or skeptic, a creative professional or someone just beginning to navigate our rapidly changing world, this group is for you! The conversations we have at our **“support group for the technological singularity”** are designed to meet everyone at their level of understanding - no technical background required, just an open mind and genuine curiosity about our collective future. How do we preserve community, creativity, connection, and purpose in this new age? Our focus for 2026 is to build out our community into somewhere between a participatory lab, an art salon and a social group. So we will be talking about and experimenting with LLMs, vibe coding and AI generated imagery and sound. We discuss the ethical and cultural implications of this new powerful set of tools as well as trade tips, discuss use cases and share workflows for getting the most out of this new era. Students will learn to observe and record the human head in clay using sight sizing and comparative measuring techniques to build a head from profile to fully rendered face, neck and base. Techniques like the following will be applied: \- Learning how to draw in space \- take notes on the sculpture itself \- and get comfortable with the medium on a basic level in order to form a strong foundation from which to build upon\. This class will teach students how to quickly and efficiently construct a portrait bust in clay with the possibility of casting it in Plaster, Resin or even bronze for those willing. Supply List coming soon! **What You'll Learn:** * How to apply drawing techniques usually used for drawing on two dimensional surfaces to three dimensional constructs. * A step by step approach to building a clay head, eliminating a constant “build and tear down” approach that may slow or bog down the process. * Basic anatomy of the skull and human head shape to help know what to look for and why. * “Proper” understanding of clay tools, what each shape and material is best used for and how to take advantage of your toolkit. * Learning to edit information: finding creative and stylistic choices to bring a finished bust to the next level. * A breakdown of casting techniques and materials needed. * How to make plaster and Silicone molds

Join us for all of the fun of City of STEM + LA Maker Faire on April 26 from 9 am - 5 pm at Exposition Park in Los Angeles! Attendance is free outside of approximately $20 for parking. The FLEET has secured a booth at the event as the inclusive costuming fan group that we are! We would love for you to visit our booth! What is City of STEM? “Recognized by the Science Festival Alliance as L.A.’s science fest, City of STEM brings together over 150 local STEM partners to produce and promote dozens of events and activities throughout the month of April.” – City of STEM website. What is Maker Faire? “Maker Faire is a gathering where inventors and creators from all walks of life showcase their cool projects and gadgets.
