August 2026 - Paper Hero's Games Playtesting!

Your game will be assigned to whichever session is more suitable. Very short games (20min or less) should be brought to Open Play instead. *Please note new members must come to First Play as a playtester at least once before having the opportunity to run a game.* **SCHEDULE:** Game days have 3 segments. **You do not need to come for the whole day!** However, if you are testing your own game you should stay and test at least one other designer's game as well. **OPEN PLAY TESTING** 2:00pm - 3:00 pm This is unstructured play time, ideal for very short games (20min or less), or games requiring 1-2 players. If you're a designer check in with me and then grab an available table and let people know you are looking for players. If you're a player, just sit down at a game and play! **SESSION ONE** 3:15pm - 4:15pm Glam Quest (Alexandra August): A turn-based card game based on reality television. Gobble (Matt Bahntge): Multiplayer snake! **SESSION TWO** 4:30pm - 6:30pm Halfcourt: Who Got Next? (Kevin Levy): Tactical 1v1 board game based on 3-on-3 basketball Photo Disco (Jon Friedman): You get a prompt, You get a time limit, and then you have to use your visual skills to locate and capture the prompt with your phone before anyone else does and before the timer runs out! Scheduled sessions are the core of First Play! There is a 1 hour session and a 2 hour session. Before each session designers will be asked to give an 'elevator pitch' of their game, after which players can decide which game they want to play. Sessions are ideal for games that are 20-90 minutes. After play, be sure to leave time to give and receive feedback! **SPECIAL NOTES**: No fee to play, and you're welcome to stay and play until the store closes at 10PM. Students will learn to observe and record the human head in clay using sight sizing and comparative measuring techniques to build a head from profile to fully rendered face, neck and base. Techniques like the following will be applied: \- Learning how to draw in space \- take notes on the sculpture itself \- and get comfortable with the medium on a basic level in order to form a strong foundation from which to build upon\. This class will teach students how to quickly and efficiently construct a portrait bust in clay with the possibility of casting it in Plaster, Resin or even bronze for those willing. This course is primarily focused on painting the head in a convincing, representational manner. Initially, emphasis will be placed on shape and tonal relationships. The class will focus on creating a portrait from the early stages of setup to the finishing strokes. Classes will include a 1.5 hour demo each week, interchanging between grisaille and a full palette painting. After each demo, students will start working on their paintings where Kai will be sharing his tips and tricks on everything he knows, allowing students to gain a level up on their skills, no matter their experience. **What You Will Learn** Sharpening your drawing and value skills. Measuring techniques such as utilization of plumb lines and shape recognition. Reshape your perspectives on painting what you see instead of what you know. Producing a balance of both grisaille monochromatic paintings and full palette painting. How to utilize brush stroke economy. Weekly live demonstrations with a variety of different subjects (will also take requests on a character to paint each week). His unique blend of traditional style with a contemporary twist is a result of two extremes: a formal training in China’s most prestigious art academy, China Central Academy of Fine Arts and intense studies with renowned contemporary painters like Daniel Keys, Tim Rees and Michelle Dunaway in the United States. He is a recipient of the Certificate of Excellence for his painting Ashton in the 20th Annual International Portrait Society of America Competition. Kai has had his work exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the US. His work has also been included and published by Poets Artist Magazine and Plein Air Magazine. In 2018, Kai was featured in Southwest Art Magazine's 21 under 31 Article, where he was one of 21 artists under the age of 31 being celebrated as rising art stars from across the West and around the country.
