An Intro to Soldering

Welcome to our soldering basics class! This class is for beginners and designed to teach you a few important fundamentals on soldering, an essential skill for anyone interested in electronics or DIY projects. We’ll go over solder types, soldering temperatures, and basic through hole component soldering. You’ll learn techniques and tips on how to properly flow solder into a joint, and how to inspect it to ensure you have a good connection. All of this will be taught on a custom circuit board designed for practicing a variety of different circumstances and techniques, which is yours to take home after the class. No experience is necessary, and all equipment and tools will be provided for you to use during the class. The class will run around 1.5-2 hours.

Agentic Horror: a Haunted House of Machines

Columbia DSL, in collaboration with Study Hall, invites you to an evening exploring agentic horror - where systems begin to act and respond in ominous ways. The session opens with a short talk tracing how horror has evolved alongside technology, from machines that mirror us to systems that behave like living organisms to networks that blur individual and collective control. As these systems grow more autonomous, authorship slips, intent becomes unclear, and the boundary between user and system begins to erode. We’ll examine the discomfort of being reflected by something nonhuman, the unease of systems that adapt in real time, and the instability of identity shaped by unseen processes. The evening culminates in a live prototype: an agentic horror experience using spatial audio and exploration. As you move through the environment, the system listens and shifts, constructing a responsive experience that is never quite the same twice. Part talk and part experiment, this meetup continues the Lab’s focus on prototyping as a way of thinking - asking not just what we build with machines, but what it feels like when systems begin to develop their own logic. About STUDY HALL STUDY HALL is a creative building series in Manhattan where all disciplines vibe and play together. At STUDY HALL, everyone's an expert at something, and no technical experience is required. Presented in partnership with the city's frontier voices (Plastic Labs, AI Residency, Zo Computer), and hosted by Charlie Freiberg and Zak Hap.

**NEW LOCATION:** OMG NYC (Origami Meetup Group! New York City) is a group for people to come together and share in the beautiful art of Origami - an ancient art of folding various mediums, most commonly paper. The word comes from the combination of the Japanese verb oru (to fold) and the noun kami (paper). Other materials often folded are fabric, wire mesh, sheet metal, tissue, thin plastic, cardboard, and straws. We meet as a group to teach each other new models and share paper, books, and tips. This meeting is free and open to all level of folders from beginners to advanced. There will be free paper available to share. You can bring your own paper and books, so you can just show up and fold! If you have models you would like to learn, or teach, let us know and we will try our best to accommodate. OMG NYC's WTF (Weekly Tuesday Folders) meetup is now located at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library at 455 5th Avenue. The meeting is on the 3rd floor in room 303.
