Sunday Night Gaming at Hex & Co. West

Sunday Night Gaming at Hex & Co. West

Sun, Apr 19, 10:00 PM
From Uptown NYC Board Gamers
4.8

**ATTENTION:** This event is starting at 6PM. **THE SIMPLE STUFF** * **Be kind.** * **Most games are planned in advance on our [Discord](https://discord.gg/rYNfkpdJNE).** * **Be on time.** People cluster up pretty quickly and you can be without a gaming partner. * **Cancel if you're not coming by 2PM that day.** We have limited seats. * **Cost is $10 at the door.** This is a special Meetup rate. * **FIRST TIMERS** **may be removed from the event** if they fail to respond to a request to confirm attendance. **THE DETAILS** Join us for a weekly Sunday night board game night at [Hex & Co](http://hexnyc.com/) in Morningside Heights. Tell the cashier that you're with “the Meetup” and they'll direct you to our tables in the back. Food and drink are available, and Hex has a large lending library you can choose from. Most games are planned in advance on our [Discord](https://discord.gg/rYNfkpdJNE). Pickup games happen all the time, but are less complex than our standard fare. All levels of game complexity are welcome, but we lean toward middle-to-heavy euros. Don't worry, teaching is a big part of our culture. **NEW TO THE MEETUP?** Thanks for coming! We hope you enjoy yourself. We are a social, friendly group that meets to play games. Language and behavior that is racist, sexist, ableist, ageist, and so on, is not tolerated. Bullying and bad-mouthing the other guests are also not tolerated. We're not here to debate politics, and we are not a dating service. Obviously gaming can sometimes include trash talking. Just … know if your opponents are up for that! And look, we all make mistakes -- if you’ve offended someone, an apology can go a long way. **QUESTIONS** **I’m relatively new to board gaming! Is this group for me?** Hi! Welcome to board gaming! Yes, it is. To make sure you have a great experience, please show up on time, before games get decided, and introduce yourself, telling people you’re new to gaming and what games you know and like. We were all new to gaming once, too. While most games we play are medium-to-heavy weight games, light games appear every week, so there's probably something for you. If you’re willing to stretch a bit and learn a more complex game, that’s great, as someone will almost always know how to teach it. To find out if players are willing to teach a game they’re about to start, just ask. Some experience with games like Azul, Catan, Splendor, Century Spice Road, 7 Wonders, Sagrada, etc., is helpful, but not essential. **What if I am on the waiting list?** It is rare that people on the waiting don't get seats, but it can happen. So you could just take a chance and show up. If you do show up, 1) ask employees up front if you can wait to pay (they're typically cool about that, but no promises here /shrug) and 2) come check in with us in the back. Seats for confirmed guests are held until 5:15, after which they're considered a no-show. (Unless they contact us first, or had something like an awful train ride.) Then seats are first-come first served. **Will someone teach me games if I don’t know them?** Often, yes - you just have to ask. But planning ahead can be helpful too, because that’ll give you a chance to read the rules before you come. **What do you mean by mid- and heavy-weight board games?** Some examples: Hansa Teutonica, Concordia, Keyflower, Great Western Trail, Clank!, Root, Small World, Scythe, Dinosaur Island, Terraforming Mars, Trickerion: Legends of Illusion, Kemet, Arcs, Underwater Cities, Food Chain Magnate, Indonesia, A Feast for Odin, Archipelago, Detective: City of Angels, and Tzolk'in. **Can we play *X*?** Sure! Suggest it. Make sure someone has a playable copy (you or the store), either you or someone else knows and can teach the game, and others agree to play. Games that take an exceedingly long time (4+ hours) probably won’t get picked up.

FINDING A BALANCE: a game design workshop with Eric Zimmerman

FINDING A BALANCE: a game design workshop with Eric Zimmerman

Wed, Apr 22, 10:30 PM
From GUMBO Collective Events
4.8

**Eric Zimmerman hosting a hands-on game design workshop at GUMBO!** **The workshop will be from 6:30 - 8:30PM with limited spots. We will host a larger reception afterwards (8:30 - 10:30PM). Feel free to bring your prototypes to playtest!** **If the event is full, join the waitlist and we will message you details for the reception. There is a small for this event that will go toward the reception.** **We are located in Suite 305. If the door downstairs is locked or the elevator doesn't work, please CALL our *new* state of the art landline phone (do not text) (718) 819-7754** *Workshop Details* As game designers we constantly build systems - to challenge players, to tell stories, to extend the life of our games. But we rarely get a chance to really focus on what it means to design and modify and balance a system in order to get a particular result. This hands-on, interactive workshop uses a simple tabletop game as the occasion to think deeply about how the same system might be balanced in different ways, how choice and chance interact in a system, and how the rules of systems can express their content. This workshop is relevant for a wide range of designers, artists, technologists - whether you are working in games, in another creative field, or you just want to better understand how games and designed systems work. Please come prepared to participate and collaborate. *About Eric Zimmerman* **Eric Zimmerman** is a veteran game designer who makes award-winning games on and off the computer. Along with Peter Lee, he was the co-founder of Gamelab, a New York City-based studio that created original games like Diner Dash and worked with companies like Lego to create dozens of online titles. He was a co-founder of the nonprofit The Institute of Play, which designed entire schools where the curriculum was based on play and games as the model for learning. Tabletop titles include Quantum (with FunForge) and The Metagame (with Local No.12). With architect Nathalie Pozzi, he has designed installations that have been shown in the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and other festivals and museums around the world. Eric is a professor at the NYU Game Center and his books include Rules of Play (with Katie Salen) a textbook and The Rules We Break. He is always ready to play.
