Port Lands: Moonlight shining toward us (6.1 km)

Biidaasige Park has become the top urban park in Canada in barely more than a year. The play area is impressive with ziplines and water works. Biking and walking paths wind through tranquil, restored wetlands and scattered artworks. Design thinking is evident in the placement of amenities and trail layout. If you haven't visited it already, go during the day. This hike happens at night, when you can see the park in a different light (or lack thereof). The park is a key development in the Port Lands area, which will transform into Toronto's newest neighbourhood in the next decade. This hike will start at the eastern end, follow the coastline to Cherry Beach and swing up to the park. Most of the area is still industrial. With its winding roads, forested trails, stone bridges, and scenic ravines, this area feels like a hidden village in the middle of the city — especially when the leaves turn golden and the air starts to feel like autumn. We’ll explore the valley around the Don River West Branch, taking in the neighbourhood’s natural beauty and historic character. Along the way, we’ll touch on the story of James Hogg, the Scottish settler associated with the area’s early mill, and the tragic **Hogg’s Hollow Disaster of 1960**, when five workers lost their lives during tunnel construction. **Attendance policy is enforced for this hike**. See below for details. Back by popular demand, we're doing a mega hike along Bloor Street in Toronto. We'll trace the entire Bloor subway line and beyond. See how the landscape densifies from golf courses to strip malls to parks to gentrified neighbourhoods as we approach the Don Valley. The restaurants along the way highlight the cultural diversity of Toronto from 5 continents. You need to be in decent shape and have a voracious appetite to do the entire route. However, as with other hikes, you are free to join and leave at any point. Those who complete the entire route will be eligible to buy a commemorative T-shirt (expected price \~$23). There are several restaurants to choose from at the end of the hike: Japanese ramen, Mexican tortas, Egyptian koshari, and Brazilian steaks. # 🍁 Fall Hike: Long Branch GO to Port Credit GO Join us for a scenic lakeside hike along the beautiful Waterfront Trail, from Long Branch GO Station to Port Credit GO Station! We’ll explore a mix of parks, beaches, and tree-lined paths, taking in the crisp autumn air, colourful leaves, and classic Lake Ontario views. This is the first time our group has done this particular route, so come along and help us welcome the fall season! We’ll take our time, with stops for photos, snacks, and conversation along the way. This is a social hike rather than a race, but please be prepared to walk for a few hours. We’ll finish in Port Credit, where we’ll take the GO train back toward Toronto. *** ### 🚆 Meetup Details — Choose Your Starting Point **Option 1: Meet in Toronto and travel together** 📍 **Meeting location:** Outside the main doors of the Fairmont Royal York on Front Street West. * **10:15 AM:** Meet outside the hotel. This talk walks through how one can go from a first patch to becoming a regular contributor, drawing on the speaker’s own path as a recent upstream contributor. Key topics include choosing a subproject that matches your interests, working in small incremental patches, and using AI tools with discipline, without losing sight of what you actually understand. **From OpenMP to Offload: Lowering Safe Rust to GPUs** Rust is a safe language which can prevent data races and memory-safety bugs at compile time. This makes it very easy to write parallel Rust code for CPUs, but once we start looking at how to use GPUs, things become a lot more complex. In this talk, we will see how we mapped safe Rust GPU code to LLVM's libomptarget, where its functionality is limiting us, and what we hope to gain from moving to LLVM's Offload library in the future. **Speakers** **Ayokunle Amodu** Ayokunle Amodu is a recent graduate and compiler engineer based in Toronto. He has been contributing to LLVM since last year, with a particular enthusiasm for MLIR. He recently completed a fellowship with the Compiler Research Group, where his work addressed a long-standing scalability issue in Clang modules. He holds a BSc in Computing Science from the University of Alberta, where his journey began in the Compiler Design and Optimization Lab. **Manuel Drehwald** Manuel Drehwald is a PhD student at the University of Toronto, a Rust compiler team member, and currently an intern at NVIDIA Research. He is interested in making Rust more usable for projects in the areas of HPC, Scientific Computing, and ML. As part of that goal, he has been leading the efforts to integrate LLVM based automatic differentiation and GPU offload into the Rust compiler.
