LUNCHTIME EXPLORATORY NATURE WALK

To attend and for exact location, register [HERE](https://www.schoolofself-reliance.com/event/lunchtime-exploratory-nature-walk/) We’ll explore the perimeter of this section of the Arroyo Seco and find some of the in-season wild edibles, and medicinal plants, and we’ll view the overall basin. Along this footpath, we will find foods, medicines, and several plants used for weaving and basketry. We’ll learn about the woods that were used for shelter, and fire, and discuss how some of the rocks were used in the past. We’ll also see many of the “invasive” non-native edibles.

# FORAGING WALKABOUT: WILD FOOD & USEFUL PLANTS, with Focus on FIRE and WEAVING plants May 30 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm $45.00 – $65.00 To attend and for exact location, register HERE We will explore a watershed area, seeing native and introduced plants. Our focus today will be to learn about those plants that are used for food, making fire, and weaving. You will learn about various edible plants, and medicinal plants. And while we might collect some greens used to make soup, we want you to see the plants that will be used to make primitive fire. And if you’re interested in basketry, you will see the traditional plants used for cordage and weaving. On our walk, you will learn how to identify these plants, and learn how to properly harvest. Join us for an insightful walk into a wild area, and learn about useful plants. Back at the tables, we will show how to make the parts of a fire kit, and you will get a chance to try it yourself. And we will also demonstrate simple basketry techniques as well.

Sierra Club Griffith Park Moonlight Hike

**Moderate hike to a vista in the park (\~4 to 5 miles RT, \~1100 ft elevation gain); bring a food item to share or for yourself.** Leashed well-mannered dogs welcome. **Gather at 6:45pm and sign waiver sheets; hike begins at 7pm and lasts around 2 1/2 hours.**(Waiver form is separate from those used for the regular evening hikes.) No beginners or tigers, please. (Tigers are super-fast hikers who wouldn't be satisfied with a moderate pace.) For those familiar with our Tuesday/Thursday evening hikes, the socially-paced hike will be similar to a level 2 or 3. There are usually between 10 and 25 hikers on the Moonlit hikes; not everyone RSVPs on Meetup. **What to bring:** Water, a light jacket in case it gets cold, and a food item to share or for yourself. Hiking boots/shoes are recommended. Flashlights are optional; many leaders discourage their use except in emergencies. (If used, colored lenses such as red help preserve others' night vision). KFC Coastal Mission- Shore Dive

At the end of each month we organize a coastal mission somewhere along the Southern California shoreline. The exact dive site depends on conditions that week - visibility, swell, surge, and what the ocean feels like doing - so we will finalize the location a few days beforehand. Anywhere from Orange County up through Ventura County is fair game. If you’re interested in joining the mission, RSVP here so we can send updates once we lock in the site and meeting details. The plan is simple: meet up, gear up, and spend a good day along the coast with other divers. Sometimes that means a couple dives and calling it a morning. Other days we hang around longer, stretch out on the beach, hydrate properly, compare notes from the dive, open a favorite beverage, maybe watch the sunset or wander off on a coastal hike. Some missions are calm blue-water days. Some are classic SoCal shore adventures. Either way the recipe stays the same. Cold water. Prepared divers. Proper hydration.

WILD FOODS: TRADITIONAL ACORN PROCESSING

To attend and for exact location, Register [HERE](https://www.schoolofself-reliance.com/event/wild-food-cooking-workshop-focus-on-acorn-processing/) **TRADITIONAL ACORN PROCESSING** This Session is a complete lesson on the historical value of the ACORN in west coast native societies, along with some nutritional information. You will then go through the entire process of turning the raw acorn into a delicious food. You’ll shell, grind, leach, test, leach some more, and blend with a few other ingredients to make acorn food products. If you didn’t already know this, ACORNS are a Super-Food, not simply squirrel food. They contain all the amino acids! Native Americans of the Americas understood this and regularly processed and consumed acorn products. In fact, acorns have been used for food by many cultures the world over. They are still commonly used in Korean dishes. In the U.S., the use of the acorn is experiencing a revival. We will also prepare a few other wild food dishes, depending on what is in season. There will be minimal walking today, but still bring your field notebook. This can apply to an Ethno-botany certificate. Location sent upon registration. $65 ($45 for students and seniors)

Sierra Club Griffith Park Tuesday Evening Hikes

**Please come early (\~6:40pm on) to sign the required waiver form ("participation agreement") and get your *new PINK waiver card*, good until the end of 2026.** Come and enjoy a great evening of hiking and conversation with fellow hikers. These conditioning hikes range in level from fairly easy (level 1) through moderate (levels 2 and 3) to advanced hikes (levels 4, 5, and 6). All levels have hills; terrain is sometimes steep with uneven footing. Because hikers are expected to maintain the pace set by hike leaders, newcomers should not hike above level 3 and may wish to start at level 2. >>>**On Tuesday & Thursday evenings, we offer \*simultaneous\* hikes at a variety of levels.** **While some levels may not be offered on a given evening, we try to cover a range of levels.**<<< Hikes are led by trained leaders and last approximately 2 hrs. Hikes begin at 7pm; newcomers should get there early to fill out a waiver and should carry the waiver card with them on the hikes. There are usually 30-60 people at the hikes. **What to bring:** Bring water and a light jacket in case it gets cold. Hiking boots/shoes or other shoes with good traction are necessary for the harder hikes (levels 3-5) and are strongly encouraged for all hikes; tennis shoes with good tread may be sufficient for the more moderate hikes (levels 1 & 2). Flashlights are optional; many leaders discourage their use except in emergencies. If flashlights are used, red lights are preferable as they interfere less with night vision. Please, no radios or other sound-producing devices that others can hear. If earbuds are used, please leave one out to maintain awareness of surroundings. Leashed, well-behaved dogs are at the discretion of the leader. This is a front country outing. **Covid Considerations:** Note that both vaccinated and unvaccinated people may be present; everyone is encouraged to keep their distance and respect each others' need to do so.
