Cantonese Parents Meetup #4

Sun, May 31, 10:00 PM
From LA Cantonese Parents Unite

Hi! I feel like it's been a while and we're definitely due for our next meetup. Looking forward to seeing you guys! We'll do another park hang for this one. Bring your kids/SOs, or just yourself. **Other items to bring (optional):** * A blanket to sit on * A favorite book if you'd like to try to read to the kids in Cantonese or just share some materials with the kids. Or a Cantonese language-related toy or game you think the kids (or adults) would enjoy! * A little snack to share with the group No pressure on any of these items. Perfectly fine to just show up as you are as well. **1 RSVP per family** Whether or not you're bringing your fam, please RSVP for just yourself to leave space for others to RSVP (we're capped by Meetup to 10 RSVP guests). **Intentions:** * Create a fun, friendly, and supportive community * Improve each other's Cantonese by providing more opportunities to speak and learn - both for parents and kids * Bond with other Cantonese-speaking parents (or non-Canto parents trying to learn) and share the joys and challenges of trying to raise Cantonese-speaking humans * Normalize Cantonese for our kids by creating a place where other kids also speak Cantonese * Promote Cantonese language and culture, and both surface and serve the Canto-speaking community scattered throughout LA * Share tips and Canto resources **If you can't make this date/time, but are interested in the group, please message me. I'd love to hear from you.**

Memorial Day Weekend Rafting the North Umpqua!

Memorial Day Weekend Rafting the North Umpqua!

Sat, May 23, 2:00 AM
From Rivers, Roots & Medicine - Nature & Consciousness Explorers

**Get out on the North Umpqua River with us over Memorial Day Weekend!** Spend **two days rafting** and **either two or three nights camping riverside** on the "Emerald Jewel," a gorgeous stretch of river in southern Oregon. This is as low of a cost multi day rafting trip we can offer. To do this, we will ask you to bring your own camping gear: Tent, sleeping bag, and part of a dinner or breakfast for community style meals. You can also rent all that stuff and pitch in extra for meals if you prefer. We will max it at 12 people, and this event is posted multiple places. We cover: * **Rafting gear + professional guides** * **Camping equipment & meals** * **Shuttle** * **Evening fire circle & chill time** **What You'll Need** * **Warm layers, clothes** * Toiletries (tooth brush and stuff. We'll bring the TP) * A love for getting outdoors **You’ll be fully outfitted** for the rafting portion with wetsuits, splash jackets, and safety gear. **Dry suit rentals (optional) additional charges.** It is early season and the water is cold (and wet), so a dry suit is preferable for those who get cold easily or don't mind spending a little more. **Camping:** We will be staying at a group campground on the side of the river half way through the run. It's a big, nice campground, with our own private bathrooms (no showers). **Camping Options:** **$520 — 2 days rafting + 2 nights camping (May 24–25)** **$580 — Full weekend (3 nights camping, 2 days rafting)** (Bring your own camping gear—kitchen setup provided) We can help you out with camping gear ($20 for tent, $50 for sleeping pad & bag) or if you want to pitch in for food rather than bring it ($40) **Interested in exploring this work, but not ready for a full Journey?** Good news! You can put 50% of the trip costs (not rentals or food) towards a journey either this summer or next! **How to Join** * Click **“Attend”** here on Meetup to RSVP * **CHECK YOUR MESSAGES & GROUP MESSAGES for an info/ group transport call** * Get ready to raft into spring **More Details** If you **click Attend,** please be sure to check your notifications and messages through meet-up. We'll have a pre-trip zoom (optional) to help everyone get on the same page.

EARLY Fryman Canyon, Studio City - Rainforest & the Nancy Hoover Pohl Overlook

EARLY Fryman Canyon, Studio City - Rainforest & the Nancy Hoover Pohl Overlook

Sat, May 23, 2:00 PM
From Hiking Fryman Canyon in Studio City
4.8

**I've reset this Saturday morning short hike of 4 miles into a 9 mile hike through the Rainforest up to the Nancy Hoover Pohl Overlook on Mulholland Drive. There will be opportunities to leave the hike early. The reason I'm doing this is because the temperatures during the California winter and spring make it ideal for longer hikes and the recent rains we've had have transformed the park into a California paradise. I'll go back to a shorter hike in the late spring. This is a HIKE, be prepared.** **I believe Wilacre Park and Fryman Canyon will be open again after this recent rain so we'll be back at it again. Let's keep our fingers crossed, hoping that we get more rain.** It's time to get outdoors and enjoy a 2 hour hike in Studio City! It doesn't appear that social distancing and masks are required any longer. So, go with whatever makes you most comfortable. I've limited the hike to 100 people and hope it is not in violation of any Covid-19 restrictions. Just kidding. Please keep your RSVP up to date. But if you can't make it, don't worry, I'm not taking attendance. But if you are on the list and are running just a little late (no more 5 minutes, we'll wait for you, if I get the message.) 3453 Fryman Road (corner of Laurel Canyon and Fryman) MEET AT THE KIOSK IN FRONT. It is right at the beginning of the trailhead. There is a free parking lot and parking along Laurel Canyon. People are coming and going so drive carefully and give yourself plenty of time to find a place. Post a message if you are running late. The parking lot has been filling up in the morning. Try arriving 15 minutes early. The first part of the hike is an uphill climb and considered "intermediate". The rest is a gentle uphill slope. There are wide paths and plenty of room for leashed dogs. The TreePeople have opened their bathrooms and there are drinking fountains for humans and dogs. Bring water, sun protection and hiking shoes, or running shoes. The dirt road and trail can be dusty and slipper. Keep that in mind. "Yes" you can trip and or slip. More info about the park: https://mrca.ca.gov/parks/park-listing/wilacre-park/ At this point, don't worry if you sign up and can't make it. We'll leave trailhead, kiosk at 7:00. Our long range goal is to see as many members getting together on a Saturday morning for a little exercise and of, course camaraderie. We visit TreePeople Park. It is a fascinating spot and while we are there we just do a little exploring. There is a short walk in a secluded section of TreePeople Park which is just beautiful and relaxing. New in town? New to the Santa Monica Mountains? New to hiking? This is a good place to begin to immerse yourself into Los Angeles.
