BASIC NATURAL NAVIGATION, AND ORIENTATION

We’ll begin with observations of the terrain — shadows, looking at trees, moisture, feeling rocks, insect signs, etc. We’ll learn how to use the stars, the sun, the moon, for navigation, including how to read the natural terrain. These are skills that our grandparents took for granted, but as we rely more and more on technologies, we have forgotten these very basic skills. Yes, you’ll also learn the basics of how to read a map, how to use a compass, how to align the map with a compass, and ways to navigate the terrain with these tools. Since this is a two-hour lunchtime class, we will cover the most basic skills. We’ll do exercises to test your new skills. Bring a notebook. This is the ‘backside’ of the San Gabriel Mts.** **Once we reach the top the entire Antelope Valley lies 4,000’ below us.** **The night time views from the campground of the desert floor below and the sunsets are just spectacular!** **We will meet at the PCT trailhead at Mill Creek Picnic Area at 0800 and hike the PCT 6 miles up to Mt Pacifico Campground, elevation 7,100’, and camp overnight.** **This is a 12 mile, out and back trip.** **Elevation gain is roughly 2,500’ from Mill Creek to Mt Pacifico Campground.** **PLEASE BE ON TIME. Silverlake can be quite beautiful at night. Walk is mostly easy 2.2 miles RT around the lake. Walk is approx. 1 hour. There is short uphill on this walk--approx. 10 minutes Some members go to the local Oyster bar afterwards. **Rain will cancel walk. Dogs ok as long as on leash.** Parking: Street parking. There is more parking when you park along the lake --along W. Silverlake Dr.

# FORAGING WALKABOUT: WILD FOOD & USEFUL PLANTS, with Focus on FIRE and WEAVING plants May 30 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm $45.00 – $65.00 To attend and for exact location, register HERE We will explore a watershed area, seeing native and introduced plants. Our focus today will be to learn about those plants that are used for food, making fire, and weaving. You will learn about various edible plants, and medicinal plants. And while we might collect some greens used to make soup, we want you to see the plants that will be used to make primitive fire. And if you’re interested in basketry, you will see the traditional plants used for cordage and weaving. On our walk, you will learn how to identify these plants, and learn how to properly harvest. Join us for an insightful walk into a wild area, and learn about useful plants. Back at the tables, we will show how to make the parts of a fire kit, and you will get a chance to try it yourself. And we will also demonstrate simple basketry techniques as well.

Sierra Club Griffith Park Moonlight Hike

**Moderate hike to a vista in the park (\~4 to 5 miles RT, \~1100 ft elevation gain); bring a food item to share or for yourself.** Leashed well-mannered dogs welcome. **Gather at 6:45pm and sign waiver sheets; hike begins at 7pm and lasts around 2 1/2 hours.**(Waiver form is separate from those used for the regular evening hikes.) No beginners or tigers, please. (Tigers are super-fast hikers who wouldn't be satisfied with a moderate pace.) For those familiar with our Tuesday/Thursday evening hikes, the socially-paced hike will be similar to a level 2 or 3. There are usually between 10 and 25 hikers on the Moonlit hikes; not everyone RSVPs on Meetup. **What to bring:** Water, a light jacket in case it gets cold, and a food item to share or for yourself. Hiking boots/shoes are recommended. Flashlights are optional; many leaders discourage their use except in emergencies. (If used, colored lenses such as red help preserve others' night vision). After around a mile, you’ll come to a 4-way intersection, with the Ranger station on your right. Make a left (going west). At the top of the road you’re forced to turn right into the (unlit) lot #1. Drive through the lot and along the road that leaves the opposite corner. You’ll soon come to lot #2, which is lit. The Sierra Club meets at the far (north) end of the lot, by the stone steps. Going north on the 5 from Downtown LA, you can also get off at the Griffith Park exit and take Crystal Springs going north, following the directions above. Hike: Vasquez Rocks with potluck afterwards (Agua Dulce, Ca)

Alright Meetup people, if you’re into hiking to unusual spots or have never seen these rock formations in person then this hike is for you. Let’s hike around the Vasquez Rocks out in Santa Clarita.
