Sept Classic: The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger

Sept Classic: The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger

Sun, Sep 6, 3:00 PM
From Booked Before Noon

I will grab a table before the start time (feel free to get us one if you're there first). This was the first book ever assigned when I began high school. I was much different back then, so I barely skimmed it and don't remember anything. Here's the synopsis: Fleeing the crooks at Pencey Prep, he pinballs around New York City seeking solace in fleeting encounters—shooting the bull with strangers in dive hotels, wandering alone round Central Park, getting beaten up by pimps and cut down by erstwhile girlfriends. The city is beautiful and terrible, in all its neon loneliness and seedy glamour, its mingled sense of possibility and emptiness. Holden passes through it like a ghost, thinking always of his kid sister Phoebe, the only person who really understands him, and his determination to escape the phonies and find a life of true meaning. *The Catcher in the Rye* is an all-time classic in coming-of-age literature- an elegy to teenage alienation, capturing the deeply human need for connection and the bewildering sense of loss as we leave childhood behind.

BROOKLYN Smutty Book Club - Tusk Love by Thea Gaunzon

BROOKLYN Smutty Book Club - Tusk Love by Thea Gaunzon

Wed, Aug 19, 11:00 PM
From Brooklyn Smutty Book Club
4.8

The book for August is recommended by Elizabeth - **[Tusk Love by Thea Gaunzon](https://a.co/d/0hTefeND)**. It's about a magical D and D fantasy world. A girl is on a journey when her party is attacked. She rescues herself then an orc comes upon her. When he realizes he can’t leave her or she'll do something dumb and die, he puts off his journey to help her. Everywhere they go to there is only one bed. Elizabeth says it's adorable and the sexy parts are really good. Quick housekeeping note: Scammers have been using the name of Smutty Book Club and its organizers to invite people to for-profit events. **If you receive any solicitation for an event or receive communication outside of Meetup asking for money, then it is a scam.** Please let us know if you see anything suspicious. Fun housekeeping note: Our annual trip to the **Renaissance Festival** will be on **Saturday, September 26th**. [Back to ](https://a.co/d/0gwAp5Fr)**[Tusk Love.](https://a.co/d/0gwAp5Fr)**[ Here's what the publisher says: ](https://a.co/d/0gwAp5Fr) *. As the daughter of an ambitious merchant, Guinevere’s path has been predetermined: marry into a noble house of the Dwendalian Empire, raise her family’s station, and live quietly as a lordling’s obedient wife. But Guinevere longs for a life unbounded by expectations, for freedom and passion and adventure.* *. Those distant dreams become a sudden reality when her caravan is beset by bandits, leaving her guards slain and Guinevere stranded alone on the dangerous Amber Road. Her only chance of survival is to travel alongside Oskar, the aloof half-orc who saved her during the attack.* *. Unlike Guinevere, Oskar’s path is not so set in stone. With his mother dead and his apprenticeship abandoned, all that’s left is a long, lonely walk to a land he’s never seen to find family he’s never met. The last thing he needs is a spoiled waif like Guinevere slowing him down—even if the spark between them sizzles with promise.* *. Despite his cold exterior, Oskar is brave and thoughtful and unlike anyone Guinevere has ever met. And while Guinevere may be sheltered, she brings out a softness in him that he has never dared to feel before. As the flames of their passion grow, they realize that soon they’ll need to choose between their expected destinations or their blossoming romance.* The book for each month is chosen at the previous book club. So please come with your suggestions! Please note: Paddy's of Park Slope serves plenty of drinks, but does not serve food. They welcome people to bring in food, or order in.
