What we're about

Sign up to host your own Shut Up & Write!

For online events, check out our Online Events Meetup.

Shut Up & Write hosts free in-person and online writing events for writers all over the world. Our goal is to ensure that every writer, regardless of genre or skill level, has access to the community, accountability, and resources they need to be successful in their personal writing goals. Our events use our proven formula: a few minutes of introductions, a period of focused writing, and a final check-in to share our progress.

What to Expect

RSVP and please arrive 10–15 minutes early to get settled at an in-person event. Our host will lead introductions and then everyone will write for a quiet, focused period of time.

Afterward, feel free to get to know each other. Members often talk about their successes and challenges as writers. Our events are a safe space for writers to work on their craft. No one will read or critique your writing.

Shut Up & Write!® Madison Central Library Room 209

Madison Public Library - Central

Join us for an hour of writing! We’ve discovered that it’s strikingly helpful to write with other writers. See if it’s true for you. We'll be holding a session at 10 AM on Saturday Sep 17th. While we're getting started, we'll try holding sessions at the Madison Central Library Room 209. We'll have free coffee to get those creative juices flowing.

Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done.

SCHEDULE:
10:00 - Quick introductions
10:15 - Timer starts: write for 1 hour
11:15 - The End: chat, take off, or keep writing

OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING happens at 11:30. Writing is very solitary. Connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing.

BEING LATE IS OKAY: just show up and get settled, then check-in with me after the session. (I’ll be wearing the bright yellow hat.) If you were on time, please be willing to make room for the friendly latecomer.

Happy writing and I look forward to seeing you at the Central Library!

What Should I Bring?
Whatever you need to be able to write!
Bring earbuds/earplugs if you want to block the cafe’s overhead music or the occasional conversation by other patrons.
Try keeping your laptop charged before the event as it's not always possible to charge everyone at once.

Other Important Details:
The library has WiFi. I will bring a carafe of coffee and a few cups, please bring your own mug if you can :)
TRAVEL / PARKING: Consider public transit or cycling to get to the event if able. There are parking garages nearby that charge at $1/hour I believe. Keep in mind that the Farmer's Market is going on nearby.
GUIDELINES: We'll want to be courteous in the library, but socializing is allowed in the study rooms. We'll want to leave the room as we found it. For more details on Library rules you can view the Library Behavior Policy and the Study Room Rules.

Note that I'm open to suggestions for better times and locations for future events. Just reach out if you have an idea!
