What we're about

Go to http://www.shutupwrite.com/organizers to host events for this Meetup!

At Shut Up & Write, we believe in the power of community—now more than ever. That’s why we’ve set up a variety of accountability structures online to keep you inspired to write from the safety of your home.

Online Events

Organizers can now organize online events through MeetUp. We’ve created a step-by-step guide for organizers to create an online event here (https://shutupwrite.com/how-to-host-shutupandwrite-events-online).

Virtual Chapter

We’ve launched a Virtual Chapter (https://challenges.shutupwrite.com/c/virtual-chapter/) on our website! Discuss your daily progress, try your hand at a writing prompt, and share writing advice and tips in our new forums.

Word Sprints

What’s a word sprint? We set a timer for 30 minutes and write, then report back with word counts and cheer each other on. Every weekday at 3pm PDT, we’re running #wordsprints on our Twitter account! Join in the fun @shutupwrite (https://twitter.com/shutupwrite).

Monthly Challenges

Sign up for one of our free Monthly Writing Challenges (https://shutupwrite.com/challenge-signup/), where we provide prompts for five days or more to inspire your writing.

Tell us your thoughts!

We welcome your suggestions and feedback – we want to support you in your writing practice. Reach out at questions@shutupwrite.com to let us know how we can help or if you’d like to get more involved with our efforts.

SU&W Drop-In Anytime Writer's Studio - 9pm to 5am MT USA Every Day

All times are Mountain Time in the United States. Use the time zone converter to figure out what time it is in your place:
https://www.thetimezoneconverter.com/

After a beta test, we're back on Zoom:

https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88270904003?pwd=eHlZQ2ZKUDRWQnBEeTZpb0tEak5YUT09

Is your schedule filling up with a job, getting your kids ready for school then picking them up? Is your spouse or partner wanting more time from you?

What's a writer to do?

How about a drop-in writing studio. It will be unmonitored. This is a big experiment. If you experience anything weird, technical glitches, personal safety breaches, be sure to let me know through the comment section for the event.

You may be the only one in the Zoom Room or there may be 30 writers. It's like going to the library, but with accountability. You still write alone, but together.

The Zoom Room link will always be the same, so make a note of it, or keep RSVPing for each session.

Mute yourself, check into the chat box with your intentions; write for 15 minutes or two hours, whatever fits your schedule. Then check out in chat when you leave.

Maybe you have time during lunch break, maybe you have an hour before it's time to get your kids from school. Maybe your most productive time is before your family gets moving in the morning.

During COVID-isolation, I joined four sometimes more SU&W sessions in a day and spent two hours or more checking in and checking out. The stopping and starting also disrupted my workflow.

I also figured out that it's the camaraderie that was the most important. You'll likely run into writers you know. Since there is no talking, there's generally quite a bit of banter in the chat rooms.

100min Sunday SU&W (Dyi host): 10am UK (5am ET)

Online event

Passcode: H3LL0
Zoom link: visible after RSVPing

Staying at home to do your civic duty during the COVID-19 pandemic? Join us for 100 minutes of writing from the comfort of your own home.

We’ve discovered that it’s strikingly helpful to write with others, even if we’re all just hanging out online together. See if it’s true for you on Sundays at 10am UK time (2am PT/5am ET).

Be it a book, blog, article, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done. And don’t worry, no one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice.

Schedule in UK time:[masked]am: Quick introductions (name, location, goal this session)[masked]: 100min muted writing (cameras optional)[masked]pm: The End - check-in, take off, or keep writing

If you arrive after the introductions, just join us in the muted writing! If you need to take off earlier, that's fine too.

WHAT DO I NEED?
A computer with working camera and microphone, a good internet connection, and optionally, headphones.

OTHER IMPORTANT DETAILS:
Technical difficulties are part and parcel of getting together online.

If you’ve never used your computer for an online meeting, take a few minutes before we meet to familiarize yourself with how to use [NAME OF PLATFORM] by reviewing the below tutorial:
