What we're about

Sign up to host your own Shut Up & Write!

For online events, check out our Online Events Meetup.

Shut Up & Write hosts free in-person and online writing events for writers all over the world. Our goal is to ensure that every writer, regardless of genre or skill level, has access to the community, accountability, and resources they need to be successful in their personal writing goals. Our events use our proven formula: a few minutes of introductions, a period of focused writing, and a final check-in to share our progress.

What to Expect

RSVP and please arrive 10–15 minutes early to get settled at an in-person event. Our host will lead introductions and then everyone will write for a quiet, focused period of time.

Afterward, feel free to get to know each other. Members often talk about their successes and challenges as writers. Our events are a safe space for writers to work on their craft. No one will read or critique your writing.

Breeze through Writer's Block! Writing & Weeding First Sunday in Art Garden

Hayes Valley Art Works

Cat got your tongue? Dog tired of trying to break out of writer's block?
We all have times when we just can't seem to get the words out. Sitting with other writers really helps break the log jam and get your writing flowing again. In our unique garden setting, you can also literally weed out your thoughts by taking some time to pull weeds in a community garden. Getting our hands in the dirt can sometimes inspire creative flow. (Note, we recommend you bring your own gardening gloves.)

We invite writers to sit in the garden for this event. Garden is at 295 Oak Street at Octavia. We usually meet at the tables by the gate at Lily / Octavia. Writers are welcome to sit in either south or north garden, both are between Page and Oak on the east side of Octavia. Come to the gates halfway up the block on Lily Street (small alley at Octavia).
We suggest bringing any devices fully charged as we don't have outlets. Pick up a beverage/snack at Mercury Cafe across the street at Page and Octavia (they have restroom facilities).

During the Shelter in Place, we were in Zoom only. Now, weather permitting, we are back the garden at Hayes Valley Art Works - 295 Oak Street at Octavia - so we can pull some actual weeds!
For in person, covid protocols required. ** Currently we are varying between in person and Online depending on weather as we are in open air garden. If weather is not great, we will be on ZOOM. ** check back for updates each week & Zoom link in the comments.

Theme is open. Poetry, prose, fiction, non-fiction. Bring your own project to work on, or use the suggested themes and writing prompts announced at each meeting. Writers are free to share from their writing or not, as they wish.

Introductions at 12:00.
12:05-12:55 writing/weeding time
12:55-1:00 discussion, weeding time, share writing if inspired
share how the session went, stay on if you wish to discuss, share, or continue writing or help pull weeds!

Shut Up & Write® (or Work)! – Sundays in Oakland (NEW time/format)

***REGULARS: Please note the new start time and shorter format (new schedule is below)***

Join us on Sundays at 3 pm for a couple hours of coworking/writing at Crepe Pan on Piedmont Avenue in Oakland!

Whether you could use some collective motivation to get going on your blog, job search, dissertation, short story, plain ol' work stuff, or just catching up on bills or emails, we will be coming together to get motivated and stay focused. We won't be sharing our work, but we will be supporting one another to put in the time and get stuff done!

NEW SCHEDULE:
3:00 - Grab a drink or bite, settle in, and introductions
3:20 - Timer starts: First work/write sprint
4:15 - Optional 5-minute break (please feel free to keep going if you've got momentum)
4:20 - Second work/write sprint
5:15 - Done! Stick around to socialize, keep working, take off...

You will find us at the big table on the left when you walk in to the cafe. There are 4 power outlets (and of course, free wifi). Please bring your laptop fully charged so we can switch off to keep everyone's computer humming along.

Three Important Notes:

  1. Please patronize the cafe. You do not need to order much, but please order something to show your gratitude to our hosts.
  2. Though I will not ask, for the sake of the group and the restaurant staff, you are expected to be vaccinated against COVID and to stay home if you've had recent symptoms of any illness.
  3. If you arrive during a working/writing spring, please just join the flow so others can stay focused, and use the 5-minute break at 4:15 to say hello and introduce yourself.

There are parking meters on and near Piedmont Avenue, but if you drive about 2-3 blocks away in any direction, you will find free street parking.

I look forward to writing and working with you - See you soon!

Best,
Sheara
