The Selantai and Pulau Mawar hike in Mersing, Johor, is a short yet scenic coastal trail renowned for its dramatic rock formations, crystal-clear blue waters, and tranquil, untouched beaches. The route passes through coastal shrubs, sandy stretches, and rocky outcrops before reaching the iconic โHeavenโs Gate (ๅคฉๅ ไน้จ)โ rocks at Pulau Mawarโone of the areaโs most photogenic spots. Itโs an easy-to-moderate hike suitable for beginners, offering beautiful sunrise views and a peaceful, nature-rich escape by the sea.
Drone video of Heaven's Gate: CLICK
People flock to Pulau Mawar undoubtedly for the Heavenโs Gate view โ a huge rock arch that opens to the view of the South China Sea. In Malay, it is also known as Gerbang Laut or in Chinese, โๅคฉๅ ไน้จโ, which means โDoor to Heavenโ. Donโt be deceived by the photo; the actual rock arch is a lot bigger than it looks.

Pulau Mawar is located at the tip of Pantai Mawar beach, just a 30-minute drive north of Mersing Town/Jetty. Many years ago, it was indeed an island separated by a small strait from the mainland. However, after years of alternating high and low tides, a sandbank forms, connecting Pantai Mawar to Pulau Mawar. So, it is not a Pulau, an island anymore โ totally accessible on foot!
Bukit Selantai is a short but rewarding coastal hill hike known for its sweeping sea views and peaceful natural setting. The trail climbs gently through light forest and rocky terrain before opening up to panoramic vistas of the coastline, offshore islands, and turquoise waters. Suitable for beginners with a moderate fitness level.

Key Features of the Butterfly Route
- Total Distance: Approximately 10 โ 12 km (variations exist, with some short-cut routes recorded at 10 km).
- Elevation Gain: Roughly ~ 900+ meters, with steep, non-stop climbs. ๐ A few sections with ropes and tree roots only! Gloves will be good. ๐
