About the Series
Why does learning a language feel so difficult, even when we are motivated, intelligent, and working hard? Why do some learners understand grammar but still struggle to speak? Why do certain features of French feel natural to native speakers but confusing or unnecessary to learners?
This free 10-week series is built around the upcoming book Why Learning Any Language Feels Difficult: What French Reveals About the Human Mind, by François Normandeau, founder of The French Club.
Instead of focusing only on grammar, vocabulary, memory, or talent, the book looks at the hidden assumptions, habits, expectations, and mental systems that every learner brings into a new language.
This summer, you can experience the book, read aloud and discussed live, with the author in the room.

What to Expect Each Week
Each session, we read together from the book while I share my screen and share one chapter or more. Then we discuss the main ideas, share personal experiences, ask and answer questions, and reflect on what the chapter reveals about language learning.
How It Works
There is nothing to buy, download, or prepare in advance. The book is not distributed before or during the sessions. Each chapter is read live, on screen, during our meeting. To follow along, simply join us each week. Being there is how you experience the book.
The book is written in English, and all online book reading sessions are conducted in English. No knowledge of French is required to take part.
A Live Reading and Feedback Workshop
This is not a grammar class, and it is not a traditional book club. It is a live reading and feedback workshop.
The book will be published this summer and will be available on our website. The first edition is planned for July 2026, and the comments, questions, and suggestions raised in our sessions may help shape the second edition, planned for late October 2026.
This is a rare chance to read a book alongside its author while it is still being completed, and to have your reactions feed directly into the 2nd edition slated for this fall. You will have the chance to share what felt clear, useful, surprising, confusing, powerful, incomplete, or worth expanding.
Who Can Join?
This series is open to French learners, language learners of any level, teachers and tutors, polyglots and language enthusiasts, members of The French Club community, and anyone curious about language learning, communication, psychology, and the human mind.
You do not need a background in linguistics or psychology, and you do not need to be an advanced French learner. The discussions are accessible, thoughtful, and practical. You are welcome whether you are learning French, teaching French, learning another language, or simply interested in why language learning can feel so difficult.
Important Note
This series is free and open to all. General participant feedback, questions, and comments may be used to improve the second edition of the book. Personal stories will not be published in an identifiable way without permission.
Join us for ten weeks of reading, discussion, reflection, and discovery as we explore what language learning reveals, not only about languages, but about ourselves.
