Skeptics in the Pub Toronto - In-Person Event
The Association for Science and Reason will be holding our regular in-person Skeptics in the Pub event. (Monthly Zoom meetings will continue as usual, but we will also be doing monthly in-person events on the second Tuesday of every month). Our previous venue, Prenup Pub, has closed, so we will meet again this month at the Town Crier Pub, 115 John St, a 9 minute (600m) walk from St Andrew Station. It has very good food and a large seletion of beer. It was quite noisy the last two times we were there, but we'll give it another try to see what it is like this time. I have not yet found a better location. We will get together for a social event to say hello to people we may have only met on-line and to reconnect with some long-time acquaintances. We will not be having a presentation or a speaker, just a chance to sit down and have a meal and/or a beverage and a conversation with a pleasant group of fellow skeptics. Food and beverages are available from the menu. Foods include a full menu from soups and appetizers to entrées and dessert. The beverage menu includes over 50 different beers on tap, many bottled beers, a selection of wines, various cocktails, and as well as non-alcoholic drinks. When you arrive, just ask where the "Skeptics" are. If you plan on joining us, please register so we can estimate the number of attendees.

While timelines are uncertain – with most informed estimates ranging from 2 to 10 years – recent advances suggest that AI systems could soon reach a critical threshold and feedback loop of recursive self-improvement. In this context, societies and governments must prepare now to address the most challenging AI scenarios. ​Based on current trends, the most powerful AI systems will likely be developed by frontier AI companies in the United States or China. Canada, like most other countries, therefore, lacks direct influence over the AI developments that may most affect our future. This doesn’t mean we have to resign ourselves to a fate determined by others. Along with efforts to promote AI adoption, innovation, and sovereignty, Canada can help to lead an international effort to avoid the worst global scale risks of AI – and make sure AI goes well and for the benefit of all. The challenges – technological, philosophical, political – are complex and daunting, especially under possibly very short timelines. Ride the Toronto Loop
Ride the Toronto Loop
After a half century(!) it’s time to close The Toronto Loop. [TORONTO COMMUNITY BIKEWAYS COALITION](https://www.communitybikewaysto.ca/) is producing and leading this epic spring ride. Volunteer marshalls will support the ride. The Loop trail is an ALMOST complete 72km circuit of trails that includes the waterfront, Humber River, Finch Hydro Corridor, and Don River trails. Unfortunately, there are about ten small gaps that undermine the value of The Loop Trail for everyday/utilitarian, recreational, and tourism cyclists. The Loop Trail is part of the city's Ravine Strategy, although the gaps are all on roads. The Loop was first announced by the city in 2020, but there has been little progress -- until the launch of the TCBC advocacy campaign and ride in November 2025. The Rockville Bike Advisory Committee meets the first Wednesday of each month from 7 pm to 9 pm. Are you a bike enthusiast? Are you interested in the bikeways in Rockville? Would you like to see more trails or bike lanes? Would you like to make a difference on how the bikeways are maintained? Then join RBAC! Since its creation, our volunteer committee has held regularly scheduled meetings throughout the year, carried out its mandated tasks, and has become an important and valuable resource to the City on bicycling issues. The active participation of the RBAC is vital to Rockville's continued success in implementing the Bikeway Master Plan Update and in improving conditions for bicycling in the City. Let's head to Glenstone - a secretly famous museum in Potomac, MD. This museum has a lot to offer, in their own words: [Glenstone](https://www.glenstone.org/) is a place that seamlessly integrates art, architecture, and nature into a serene and contemplative environment. It is museum of modern and contemporary art and is integrated into nearly 300 acres of gently rolling pasture and unspoiled woodland in Montgomery County, Maryland, less than 15 miles from the heart of Washington, DC. The museum offers hiking/walking trails and we will be hiking 3-4 miles. Additionally it has two cafe's with vegan options. We will be stopping for a bit at one of them for snacks/coffee.
