🥾 **Hike Description**
For centuries, the beauty of **Box Hill** has inspired artists, writers and musicians. **Jane Austen** set a scene from Emma here, George Lambert painted it in 1733 (now in Tate Britain), and it has even featured in modern songs. The poet **Keats** and **G.K. Chesterton** also drew inspiration from these hills, showing how this corner of Surrey has long captured creative imaginations.
Our hike begins in the **Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty**, with woodland and rolling trails through Norbury Park before joining the twisting roads used in the **2012 Olympic cycling race**. From here, we climb to the summit of Box Hill, where the **Salomons Memorial viewpoint** offers sweeping panoramas across the Weald and as far as Devil’s Dyke by the South Coast. On the way we also encounter traces of history, including a late 19th-century fort built to defend against French invasion and the semi-ruined folly tower from 1815.
After soaking up the views, we descend to the **River Mole** and cross its famous **Stepping Stones**, a much-loved landmark of the area. The trail then continues through open chalk downland and woodland before reaching **Denbies Wine Estate**, the largest vineyard in England, winner of international awards including Best Rosé in the World at the 2010 International Wine Challenge.
A wonderfully varied hike that blends chalk downs, riverside beauty, iconic views and layers of history — all within easy reach of London.

Scotland & the Lake District National Park - Easter bank Holiday
Scotland, Lake District National Park - Saturday 4th April to Monday 6th 2026 (Easter weekend)
During the 3 days we will visit the most beautiful views in Southern Scotland (Dumfries and Galloway) and the Lake District National Park.
Starting on Saturday morning in Scotland, this event is only suitable for members that are in or near Scotland during this period. The below itinerary is very full, so only suitable for members that are energetic and keen walkers. Easter is a great time for this adventure, not too hot for our walks and sunset is around 7:30pm so will have over 13 hours of daylight each day to explore.
Saturday 4th April: Scotland: Solway coast with sea views, bays, lochs and forest trails
Sunday 5th April: two Scottish walks: 1.Circular walk of Loch Trool (lake) + 2. Merrick walk
Monday 6st April (Easter Monday): Lake District - Cats Bells (fantastic lake views)
For the above three days event I only have 8 FREE places for members that are fit, regular walkers and have access to a car as there are no public transportation to our walks as we are in remote areas.
I am also organising a “non free” 4 days event leaving London (Colindale) on Good Friday morning 3rd April via mini bus, returning late on Bank holiday Monday 6th April. If you are interested in the full "non free" 4 day event, just email michaelwk16@yahoo.com. Michael will organise all of the logistics: Transportation from London via mini bus, Premier Inn hotel accommodation and all 4 walks, just message me and I will send you details & cost. There is currently 16 members on this paid event with only 6 place remaining. Below is the schedule for the "non free" 4 days event:

Lake District National Park
If anywhere is the heart and soul of walking in England, its the Lake District, an area of wonderful high mountains, deep valleys and of course lakes. In the Lakes you will find proper mountains, wild and rugged. We will walk along the best Lake walks, Cat Bells with Derwent Lake this walk have been voted as one of Britain’s top 5 walks. All the photos you see below are the places we plan to explore during the April event. There are no mountain climbs on this event just big hills to get to high viewpoints for the fantastic lake views. I have lead walks in the Lakes for over 20 years and believe the walks I have selected are the best for scenery.
Southern Scotland (Dumfries and Galloway)
Our walk in Scotland will be very contrasting to the other 2 National Park in the Lakes and Peaks, giving you a memorable experience. There will be lochs (Scottish lakes), coastal views, bay and wild Scottish forest. On Saturday our Scottish coastal walk is along the Solway coast encompassing splendid sea views, bays and lochs. On Sunday there will be two walks, the first is a circular walk around Loch Trool and is arguably the finest short 5 miles walk in the Dumfries area. We will walk around the whole lake with high hills all around.
For the free offer I can ONLY send you essential details for the three hike days i.e. walk description, meeting points & kit list but cannot provide info on accommodation or transportation. You will need accommodation in the Carlisle CA3 area on Friday night. Please note the drive to Carlisle is more than 6 hours.

NEW HIKE: The Dedham Vale, Pt1: exquisite British countryside in all its glory
Mama Jon has got a brand new trip in a fairytale land, right on the border with Essex and Suffolk, filled with sneaking rivers, glorious little villages, woodlands and a beautiful estuary.
This hike will be the first in the region, as it has a lot to offer, painted by some of the greatest masters, you will be walking through some actual living paintings.
There is a reason why the Area of Natural Outstanding Beauty is called Constable Country, the famous John Constable himself has painted many of his master pieces based on the scenes in the region and you might recognise some of his most famous scenes as you walk through it, it is a bit as if you were one of his character evolving in one of his worlds, and, who knows, maybe you are, and someone will be looking at you and regognise the masterpiece that you are!
We will kick off the hike with the official Dedham Vale path and finish the hike in the pretty town of Manningtree, right by the sea in this pretty estuary right after the second part of the hike which is a section of the Essex Way.
Now, afterwards, I do know that my hiking family are all a bunch of foodies, so, yes, we can pop into a restaurant or a bar for a meal or a drink and ruin our day out burning calories by doubling our calories intake of the day at a nice local eatery :)
As always, we will buy a discounted train ticket at the station, so please bring some cash, price will be confirmed on the day but it should be around £30. The train journey takes about an hour and 10 minutes if there are no delays.

TIME: about 5 hours
TRANSPORT:

MEETING POINT:

Please be on time, or you will have to buy your own train ticket which will be pricier.

Guided hike
A fun day out with lovely people

Date/Time: Sunday 5 April 2026, 3 – 8pm (and likely a few hours beyond!)
20% off food and drink for our group
First-timers: please see notes below on the Meetup fee, bringing boards, etc ☺️
Dear Backgammon Lovers,
Another big hug and thank you to Lydia for covering backgammon last Sunday at Gest.
We’re delighted to announce another gathering at Gest again, literally just next to one of Euston Square's tube exits.
Gest has become a favourite spot for our lively and friendly backgammon gatherings, offering us more space and a relaxed atmosphere, with warm and welcoming staff.
Social Backgammon
Whether you’re a seasoned player or completely new, everyone’s welcome. Our Sunday afternoon offers a mix of friendly competition, laughter and the occasional lucky double six. Add alongside this, the food, drinks and easy conversation, and you’ve got the makings of a relaxed afternoon rolling dice into a fun evening.
20% off food and drink
In order for us to be at Gest, we must each order at least one drink, possibly two, and if possible one of their meals - I can highly recommend their chicken burger. This will help us to maintain such a generous deal in a comfortable atmosphere.
Gest has generously offered our group 20% off food and drink for this event.
About Our Backgammon Group
Our group started in June 2015 and has now run more than 400 official meetups plus over 200 informal gatherings. With just over 2,000 members, we’re the largest backgammon group in the UK, and we're known for our warmth, humour and friendliness. We typically meet fortnightly on Sundays, with around twenty or so regulars along with new players each time.
Everyone is welcome, whatever your level.
Dinner, drinks and playing time
We usually sit down for a relaxed group meal around 6pm, but you’re free to order whenever it suits you. Many people arrive early, stay late, and dip in and out of games between food and drinks.
RSVP
Please RSVP as soon as you can, as it really helps with planning, especially at this popular venue.
Bring your own board
If you have a backgammon board, please bring it. If you don’t, just post a note on the Meetup page or message me and we’ll match you up. It’s always fun to see the variety of boards people bring along.
Meetup fee
£4 per person. This small contribution helps pay Meetup, cover tip, admin, hosting and other organisational costs that keep the group running smoothly.
Etiquette
Let’s keep things friendly and respectful over the board, and please thank the lovely Gest staff for hosting us. If anything crops up during the event, just have a quiet word with me.
Backgammon rules
We play under international backgammon tournament rules, with one or two minor exceptions. Full details are on our Meetup page.
Contact
If you need help finding the venue or have any questions, call or text me on 07956 263451.
Please avoid sending Meetup messages within two hours of start time, as they may not be seen in time.
Looking forward to rolling dice and sharing another brilliant Sunday with you all – and to celebrating the New Year at Gest for the fifth time.
Best wishes,
Chris Sattaur 🤗

BASEBALL IS BACK!! Clippers' Home Saturday Opener!!! ⚾ 🧢 🌭 🎆 🧨 🎇 🗽 🦅 🇺🇸
**Summary**
Celebrate America's 250th year and the [Columbus Clippers'](https://www.milb.com/columbus) 50th season by watching [Franklin County's](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbus_Clippers) best team play the [best game in the world](https://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/babe_ruth_140116) at [one of the ten best](https://www.dispatch.com/story/sports/minors/2025/03/26/huntington-park-voted-top-10-minor-league-ballparks-usa-today-10best-awards/82656048007/) baseball stadiums in the United States in their 2026 home Saturday opener!
The first pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. The gates always open an hour before the scheduled first pitch. I'm usually at the ballpark a half an hour before the scheduled first pitch. Clippers' games usually last around two and a half hours.
Being a few minutes early will help us secure good seats.
**Parking**
I personally always like to park in the [McConnell Garage](https://www.google.com/maps/place/McConnell+Garage/@39.9685114,-83.0103938,17z/data=!4m6!3m5!1s0x88388f24145462d1:0x6238c0f0c851ab70!8m2!3d39.9692957!4d-83.0081175!16s%2Fg%2F1jkw6y27y?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI1MTExNi4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D). If nothing else is going on in the area, this should be $7. However, I've also seen it be as high as $22. I can't say for certain what it will be for this game, but once I know, I will post in the comments.
Alternately, there are other lots in the area you can try which will probably be a few dollars cheaper. [Here is a map](https://img.mlbstatic.com/milb-images/image/upload/q_auto/milb/ernng44ya2xkr4wbheql) of all the garages and lots surrounding the stadium. Keep in mind that many of these are outdoor lots and your car will be out in the elements.
If you decide to look for a different lot, I would mildly recommend either the Buggyworks Lot or the Broadbelt Lot, but I have never parked in either of these myself. Although it won't apply for this game, keep in mind that street parking is also free citywide in Columbus on [Sundays and holidays](https://www.columbus.gov/files/sharedassets/city/v/1/public-service/right-of-way-permit/on-street-parking-out-of-service-policy-and-procedure-final-8.15.2022-signed.pdf).
**Where We'll Be**
Here is a [map of the ballpark](https://img.mlbstatic.com/milb-images/image/upload/milb/qkqohbqjgtx5uwo6zkgn.pdf).
We'll be sitting on Level 3 of the [Left Field Building](https://www.milb.com/columbus/ballpark/huntington-park) (aka the "AEP Power Pavilion"), which features a 110 foot bar with six open patios overlooking the field. This area is covered and will be out of any sun or rain that may transpire.
If you enter the park through the Center Field Entrance (which is at the intersection of Nationwide Blvd. and Neil Ave.), there will be a door to your immediate right after you enter that leads to a staircase up into the Tower.
This door is not well-marked, and if you've never been to Huntington Park before, you may wonder if you're actually allowed to go in and up the stairs. Yes, you are.
We'll be on the Tower's "Level 3". I have uploaded to the Photos section of this event page, below, a picture of the sign you want look for after you ascend the stairs, so you'll know you're on the correct floor.
**Tickets**
Do not buy your tickets ahead of time. They will literally be twice as expensive if you buy them on Ticketmaster.
Instead, go to the ticket window near the Center Field Entrance. Buy a *Standing Room Only* ticket (don't worry, you won't be standing), which will cost you a flat $8 with no other taxes or fees.
These tickets never sell out, and this is the cheapest way to get into the park.
**Carry-Ins**
Per the team's [website](https://www.milb.com/columbus/ballpark/a-z-guide): "Soft-sided coolers are permitted in the general seating area [which is where we'll be], but not hard-sided coolers; also no alcohol, glass bottles, or cans will be permitted. SMALL bags or backpacks of food items and beverages in plastic bottles are ok. Reusable water bottles are permitted, but must be empty upon arrival. Diaper bags are allowed."
I always bring a disposable plastic bottle of water and refill it as I need at the park. Bottled water at the game is something like 4 or 5 dollars. So if you want a bottle of water, I recommend bringing your own bottle instead of buying it at the park.
**Food & Drink**
The area we'll be in has burgers, hot dogs, salads, soft pretzels, ice cream, and other sorts of things you would expect at a baseball game. I've posted pics of the menu in the Photos section, below.
The burger and fries are $14 plus tax, and they're not bad. (This is what I usually get.) The beer is *really* overpriced. It's like $9, or $20 for a pitcher. If there's some people to help me drink it, though, I'll buy a pitcher of Michelob Ultra.
While we'll be on the penultimate floor of the Tower, the top floor (which has a great view, but is fully exposed to the elements) has a [Dirty Frank's](https://dirtyfranks.com/) hot dog stand. I've never gotten anything from there, though I've been told it's good.
The Donatos pizza stand is also a very short walk away from where we'll be. I love Donatos, but the pizza is so expensive at the ballpark. It's like $9 for a personal-sized pepperoni. It is good, though.
**Peroration**
Let's (watch them) play ball!

Hike Gertrude S. Lawrence Hoover Nature Preserve near Galena
This trail is a meandering path through the woods. There will be some overlooks and a couple stops at the creek as well as time along a waterway. It will not be a fast paced hike. There is some elevation change and uneven terrain. I will be using poles just to be safe! Will aim to get in about three miles.
Optional lunch after if there is an interest.
