Cosmere (Stormlight) Discussion Meetup
Cosmere (Stormlight) Discussion Meetup
Greetings Radiants and Singers! Join fellow fans of Brandon Sanderson’s **Cosmere** for an open, relaxed discussion celebrating the shared universe that connects *Stormlight Archive*, *Mistborn*, and beyond. This meetup is designed for enthusiasts who enjoy exploring lore, themes, magic systems, and big-picture connections—whether you’re deeply versed in worldhopping theory or simply curious to learn more. Please bring your favorite characters, quotes, moments, memories and imagination to fuel the discussion. We cannot restrict spoilers, cause how can we contain ourselves with such knowledge, but please be mindful of those others who haven't explored everything. In addition to open discussion, I plan to bring the **Cosmere tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG)** and we may spend time brainstorming ideas/reactions for the TTRPG. No TTRPG experience is required but surely welcome those that have experience and can share —this is a creative, collaborative conversation focused on imagination, worldbuilding, and shared enthusiasm. This session will not be to conduct/play the game but there may be a follow on session for those that have an interest in doing so! Come ready to share favorite moments, unanswered questions, and big ideas—or just to listen and enjoy talking Cosmere with people who love it as much as you do. I will bring some materials and ideas, but the group will drive the conversations and This will be hosted at boardroom in clarendon, please plan to cover your own expenses and tip appropriately given our usage of the space. *Life before death, strength before weakness, journey before destination*
James: A Novel by Percival Everett (2024)
James: A Novel by Percival Everett (2024)
When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond. A brilliant, action-packed reimagining of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, both harrowing and ferociously funny, told from the enslaved Jim's point of view.

Read & Reflect: A Social Reading Circle. Shared Pages, Shared Insights.
📚 Do you love reading, but wish you had a structure and a community to share your insights with? Join our small circle of curious minds (just 4 members per gathering) as we come together for an hour of focused reading—in the calm setting of a library or the cozy atmosphere of a café. Here’s how it works: First part: Quiet reading on your own—bring a book you’re exploring, whether it’s philosophy, history, psychology, literature, or anything meaningful to you. Second part: We regroup and each person shares key takeaways, insights, or questions sparked by their reading. This sparks a structured yet free-flowing conversation around ideas, perspectives, and personal reflections. Why join? Add structure to your reading habit. Discover new books, authors, and ideas through others’ choices. Build real connections by sharing and listening deeply. Socialize around something meaningful instead of small talk.

January Romance Book Discussion Club
January Romance Book Discussion Club
Please join us for our first Romance Book Discussion Club of 2026! Location is at my apartment in Dupont. Address and details will be provided to attendees closer to the meeting. Also, please update your RSVP by 6pm the day before, if you're unable to come. That will allow people on the waitlist to have enough time to consider coming, as well. Looking forward to discussing romance books with you all and excited to see what the New Year will bring for us all :) \*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\* This month the themes are: **Most Batshit/Unhinged Plot** and **Bodyguard trope**. As always, you do not need to read a book that falls into both categories, you're welcome to read whatever you like, but many members find it fun to explore and try new tropes and subgenres. For our "best of the best" the theme is **best redemption or grovel** of a character. So be thinking of a book you've read at any point that would fall into that category. A couple of suggestions to get people thinking: - *Aurora Rising* by Jessie Mihalik, sci-fi romance with a bodyguard trope. - *White Horse Black Nights* by Evie Marceau, fantasy romance with bodyguard/escort via horse through a dangerous forest. As for unhinged....that's about half the books I read, so that'd be a long list. "Unhinged" can be interpreted as campy, unrealistic/ridiculous, spicy, weird etc. However you interpret the prompt, feel free to include it! I also love a good bodyguard trope, but never read them enough, so I'd love to some recommendations myself! As always, please do sound off in the comments about suggestions for books or authors.
Time to Read-In Person
Time to Read-In Person
We will meet outside as long as the weather is nice. If not, we will move inside. Look out for a comment the morning of each meeting with our exact location. As we are meeting in person, please remember to bring something to read as we usually spend some time sharing our current reads and/or reading when meeting in person. As a reminder, there is no assigned reading; please bring whatever you are currently working on. This group is super casual, sometimes we read and sometimes we talk the whole time. **** NO SHOW POLICY: Due to the high number of members on the waitlist recently we are having to reinstate our no-show policy. If you sign up and no-show to 2 events you will be removed from the group. Reminders are provided weekly to change your RSVP to allow those on the waitlist a chance to come to the meet-up, no 3rd chances with be given. Please be considerate to your fellow members. Thank you! I look forward to reading you!

Reading Time (In-Person) {Near Rosslyn Metro}
* We meet inside Compass Coffee. * Details on parking below. * Bring something to read, as we often take some time at the beginning telling each other about what we're currently reading. * I have a favor to ask of you. To offset the cost of Meetup fees (\~$200 a year), I kindly request that you consider a small donation to my my [Pledge account](https://www.meetup.com/a-different-type-of-book-club-arlington/#pledge). 😊 **NOTE: NO DISCUSSION OF POLITICS: 12/31/21 UPDATE** For the sake of polite company, moving forward, we will avoid the discussion of politics at meetings of the book club. Please let me know if you have any questions. **PARKING** On Saturdays and Sundays, parking is free on 16th Street N. (near Hillside Park, 1601 N. Pierce Street, Arlington, Va.), and also on the adjacent N. Pierce Street (between Clarendon Blvd. and Fairfax Dr.). Likewise, on weekends, parking on N. Queen Street (between Clarendon Blvd. and Fairfax Dr.) is free. **NON-ATTENDANCE / NO-SHOW POLICY** If you have said that you will attend this event, but no longer are able to attend, please kindly update your status to "Not Attending" so that someone on the waitlist is able to RSVP. **Because this Meetup group is popular, and typically has a waitlist, effective immediately, I'm instituting a two-event no-show policy. If you RSVP as "Attending" but do not show at two events, you will be removed from this Meetup group.** We look forward to seeing you! Best, Jay
January Meetup: More Than My Mistakes
January Meetup: More Than My Mistakes
Her mom’s not-so-constructive criticism and constant reminders of her past mistakes don’t refute the narrative either. Fortunately, there is one positive thing they both believe in: Ria becoming a documentarian. With a year of film school under her belt, Ria finally finds herself on a path that both she and her mother could be proud of…that is until a mistake behind the wheel changes the trajectory of her life, and she deems herself unworthy of true happiness. Ria’s guilt and fear of messing things up pushes her to live a “safe” life, where she works a job she hates, pushes away the man she loves, keeps around a toxic best friend, and allows other people’s opinions to dictate her choices. But when she finds herself in trouble at her cookie-cutter job, a new opportunity arises to participate in a life-changing film competition. The timing feels like fate and reignites the spark she once had for her forgotten dreams. Will Ria be able to capitalize on this opportunity and heal old wounds in the process? Or will the past she's been running from catch up to her and steal her dreams away for a second time? MORE THAN MY MISTAKES is a story of redemption, forgiveness, purpose, love, friendship, and everyday girlhood.

Bad Girls Book Club January 2026
Bad Girls Book Club January 2026
**Our January novel is: Once Upon a Wardrobe by Patti Callahan** **This month's featured novel is a 20th-century biographical fiction, coming-of-age, historical romance, women’s fiction, world literature, student biography, heartfelt, magic, and feel-good novel. The book is 311 pages in print and 7 hours and 8 minutes on audiobook.** 1950: Margaret Devonshire (Megs) is a seventeen-year-old student of mathematics and physics at Oxford University. When her beloved eight-year-old brother asks Megs if Narnia is real, logical Megs tells him it's just a book for children, and certainly not true. Homebound due to his illness, and remaining fixated on his favorite books, George presses her to ask the author of the recently released novel The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe a question: "Where did Narnia come from?" Despite her fear about approaching the famous author, who is a professor at her school, Megs soon finds herself taking tea with C. S. Lewis and his own brother Warnie, begging them for answers. Rather than directly telling her where Narnia came from, Lewis encourages Megs to form her own conclusion as he shares the little-known stories from his own life that led to his inspiration. As she takes these stories home to George, the little boy travels farther in his imagination than he ever could in real life. After holding so tightly to logic and reason, her brother's request leads Megs to absorb a more profound truth: "The way stories change us can't be explained. It can only be felt. Like love."
January Book Club - Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy
January Book Club - Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy
For January, we’re reading Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy. For fans of Flight Behavior and Station Eleven, a novel set on the brink of catastrophe, as a young woman chases the world's last birds--and her own final chance for redemption. Franny Stone has always been a wanderer. By following the ocean's tides and the birds that soar above, she can forget the losses that have haunted her life. But when the wild she loves begins to disappear, Franny can no longer wander without a destination. She arrives in remote Greenland with one purpose: to find the world's last flock of Arctic terns and track their final migration. She convinces Ennis Malone, captain of the Saghani, to take her onboard, winning over his eccentric crew with promises that the birds will lead them to fish. As the Saghani fights its way south, Franny's dark history begins to unspool. Battered by night terrors, accumulating a pile of unsent letters, and obsessed with pursuing the terns at any cost, Franny is full of secrets. When her quest threatens the safety of the entire crew, Franny must ask herself what she is really running toward--and running from. Propelled by a narrator as fierce and fragile as the terns she is following, Charlotte McConaghy's Migrations is both an ode to our threatened world and a breathtaking page-turner about the lengths we will go for the people we love.

Bad Girls Book Club February 2026
Bad Girls Book Club February 2026
**Our February novel is: Julia by Sandra Newman** **This month is a classic, dystopian, fiction, literary fiction, women’s fiction, and science fiction novel. The book is 394 pages in print and 14 hours and 20 minutes on audiobook.** **An imaginative, feminist, and brilliantly relevant-to-today retelling of Orwell’s 1984, from the point of view of Winston Smith’s lover, Julia, by critically acclaimed novelist Sandra Newman.** Julia Worthing is a mechanic, working in the Fiction Department at the Ministry of Truth. It’s 1984, and Britain (now called Airstrip One) has long been absorbed into the larger trans-Atlantic nation of Oceania. Oceania has been at war for as long as anyone can remember, and is ruled by an ultra-totalitarian Party, whose leader is a quasi-mythical figure called Big Brother. In short, everything about this world is as it is in Orwell’s 1984. All her life, Julia has known only Oceania, and, until she meets Winston Smith, she has never imagined anything else. She is an ideal citizen: cheerfully cynical, always ready with a bribe, piously repeating every political slogan while believing in nothing. She routinely breaks the rules, but also collaborates with the regime when necessary. Everyone likes Julia. Then one day she finds herself walking toward Winston Smith in a corridor and impulsively slips him a note, setting in motion the devastating, unforgettable events of the classic story. Julia takes us on a surprising journey through Orwell’s now-iconic dystopia, with twists that reveal unexpected sides not only to Julia, but to other familiar figures in the 1984 universe. This unique perspective lays bare our own world in haunting and provocative ways, just as the original did almost seventy-five years ago.
