This Assata Shakur Popular Education session, in conjunction with the Black Alliance for Peace-DC, will explore the history and political significance of African Liberation Day as a global expression of Pan-African unity, anti-colonial struggle, and Black self-determination. Together we will examine how liberation movements across Africa and the African Diaspora challenged colonialism, imperialism, and political repression while building movements rooted in collective power and international solidarity. In drawing parallels between recent events and medieval attacks on the Church’s authority she’ll describe how today’s anti-Church memes echo the anti-pope and anti-Catholic images that Martin Luther disseminated in large numbers with the help of woodcut printing. We’ll look at tensions between past presidents and past popes over not just wars, but issues such as abortion, stem-cell research, and abortion access. We'll take a pleasant late late May stroll through the wetlands and woods, with your fellow Environmentally conscious folks, which was gifted to Fairfax County by President Gerald Ford in 1975 after a long and storied history starting with George Mason (yes, that George Mason). The park is home to abundant wildlife and is known for attracting many birds, amphibians, and plants that are considered less common in the region. Secondary-growth forest sprinkled with several small, native-grass and wildflower meadows surround much of the wetland habitat. If you've never been, it's not to be missed!
