The school was founded in the middle of the 15th century by Iizasa Chōisai Ienao at the Katori Shrine (Katori jingū) and has become the origin of numerous other martial arts schools over the course of its almost 600-year history. The training consists of the continuous repetition of fixed sequences of movements (kata) and includes the use of classic Japanese weapons such as the sword (iai-jutsu, battō-jutsu, ken-jutsu, ryōtō-jutsu, kodachi-jutsu), the long staff (bō-jutsu), the lance (naginata-jutsu) and the spear (sō-jutsu), as well as unarmed disciplines, tactics and spiritual aspects. **The Katori Berlin dojo** is the only official shibu of Otake Nobutoshi-shihan’s dojo Shinbukan in Germany and fully dedicated to the transmission and study of one martial tradition: Tenshinshō-den Katori Shintō-ryū. Through these efforts we aim to contribute to the cultural preservation of this martial tradition. The dojo has one officially appointed shidosha. **Our sensei**: Sebastian Graetz has been active in martial arts since 1997. After almost 15 years of taekwondo in Berlin, he started with Katori Shintō-ryū in Asia in 2014. Since then, he has studied in Japan with Ōtake Risuke-shihan and Ōtake Nobutoshi-shihan, and in Vietnam with Malte Stokhof-shihandai. In 2023, he received his Menkyo license and permission to set up a training group in Berlin the following year.

Touch and Move: Kontakt improvisieren, Community schaffen
Touch and Move: Kontakt improvisieren, Community schaffen
**Touch and Move: Improvising Contact, creating Community** with ***Jochen Kleres and/or Zahiro Ji*** for **GBTQ men\*** **[BOOK A TICKET!](https://wearevillage.org/en/calendar/)** **Member: 10 €** **Non Member: 15 €** This is a class for GBTQ men\* with all levels of experience, from total newbies to advanced. We meet and begin by checking in with each other, followed by a guided exploration moving from somatic practice to contact dance improvisation. This all culminates in opening the space for the free flow of dancing and explorations in duos, trios and as a group. Bodywork will help us to warm down at the end and integrate what we experienced. Dance is our way to create a space for exploration: what happens when queer men’s bodies meet and get in touch without any expectations and intentions? In Contact Improvisation, touch is the source of finding dance movements. It helps you to be open to the here and now, to surprises, to letting go of performing roles, meeting expectations, and following scripts. Any movement can be part of this dance, no matter how simple – we literally move any way we feel. This creates a conversation without words, simply through our moving bodies. Feeling ourselves by sensing others can create nourishing bonds of community as much as it liberates us. We emphasise consensus, respect, diversity of people and energies, listening, and a non-judgmental space. **General Information** • Wear comfortable clothes. • We’ll speak English and/or German, depending on the needs of the group. • This event is one of two free events included each month in the membership programme.

Folk Tales in Watercolour
Folk Tales in Watercolour
**Folk Tales in Watercolour - Illustration Workshop** This month-long workshop explores **European folk stories, forest spirits, witches, and strange old myths through watercolour.** Drawing inspiration from figures like Baba Yaga and other eerie, ambiguous characters from across Europe, we’ll work with narrative, mood, and symbolism. Across four sessions, participants will experiment with watercolour techniques suited to storytelling: **loose washes, layered textures, limited palettes and character creation.** We’ll look at how folklore can shape visual worlds—crooked houses, deep woods, animal-human figures, and half-remembered legends—and translate those ideas into expressive paintings. Open to all levels. However, this workshop prioritises interpretation over technique, using watercolour as a tool to explore and reimagine European folk stories. **Tuesdays 3 – 10 - 17 - 24 February** from 6:00 to 7:30 PM Join us for the whole course or for singles classes! **In Friedrichshain**, Berlin (exact address by e-mail) **Price:** * **85€** for the 4 classes * **25€** per single class Payment via **PayPal / Bank transfer** ### **Please bring your own material.** If you’d like material suggestions, please don't hesitate to reach out. Families Through Time: Past Stories, Present Lives, Future Families
Families Through Time: Past Stories, Present Lives, Future Families
### **Families Through Time: Past Stories, Present Lives, Future Families** Families are central to human life. They shape identity, belonging, values, and everyday experience. Across history, family forms have changed in response to economic conditions, cultural traditions, social norms, and political structures. At the same time, families deeply influence individuals’ emotional worlds, relationships, and life opportunities. This session explores how family structures have evolved over time, how they function in contemporary society, and how they may transform in the future. We will examine both structural changes and personal experiences, connecting historical developments with present realities and future possibilities. In this session, we will focus on the following topics: * **Historical family forms**: nuclear, extended, and multigenerational households and how they shaped daily life * **Changing roles across generations**: shifts in parenting, gender roles, and family responsibilities * **Social and cultural influences**: how norms, religion, and legal systems define and regulate family structures * **Contemporary family diversity**: single-parent, blended, LGBTQ+, and chosen families * **The future of families**: how technology, work patterns, migration, and social change may transform family life This will be an open and reflective conversation grounded in historical understanding, social analysis, and personal perspectives. Together, we will explore how families shape our past and present—and how we can imagine supportive and inclusive family forms for the future. **Event Details** ️ **Date:** Saturday, 28 February 2026 ⏰ **Time:** 14:00 **Location:** Hardenbergstraße 10, 10623 Berlin **WhatsApp (for prep materials and directions):** [Group Chat](https://chat.whatsapp.com/Ba8ZAaH2Yuk6FGmD3LLO7H) ⚠️ Note: This is a WhatsApp group link. Offener Deutschunterricht - Text & Konversation - Niveau B2+ (Fortgeschritten)

Contra dance with Big Scioty on March 7 - First Congregational Church
**Caller: Frank Buschelmann** **Band: The Rosenthorns** **Big Scioty Contra Dance** **temporarily returning to our long ago location for Jan-March - First Congregational Church, 444 E. Broad St., Columbus 43215** WHAT IS CONTRA DANCING? Picture the Grand Ball scenes like you’ve seen in period films such as “Pride and Prejudice”, where the dancers are lined up in long lines, across from each other. That’s English Country Dancing, the predecessor of contra dancing. Now, add moves like “swing your partner” and “do-si-do,” like you’ve seen in square dancing. Set it to fabulous, high energy, live music with fiddles, guitars, percussion and more, alá “Riverdance.” Finally, set the whole scene down in the middle of Woodstock, with a hip, groovy atmosphere, a bit of tie-dye, and hints of counter-culture attitude. THAT’s Contra Dancing! Wear cool and comfortable clothes (you will get warm) and clean shoes that won't mark up our nice wood floor. Be sure to come for the beginner's lesson from 7:30 - 8:00, followed by dancing 8:00 - 10:30. All dances are taught; we will help you learn! Beginners always welcome, no need to bring a partner. Cost is $10.00 adults, $5.00 ages 12-26. Under 12 free. Free parking in church lot. For more information contact me or check out our website: [www.bigscioty.com](http://www.bigscioty.com/) Please bring your own refillable water bottle. Snacks to share are always welcome!
