FRENCH CONVERSATION (Rusty Intermediate) with a native tutor
***WARNING***
*If you are new to our Meet Up or haven't attended any class for months, please, BEFORE signing up to a conversation class, send an email in French to Christian at frenchlondonexperience at gmail dot com ; Anyone -* aforementioned - *signing up to a class before getting an agreement will be removed from the list. Thanks for your cooperation.*
You want to improve your fluency, your pronunciation and your French skills? You want to get more vocabulary, knowledge and understanding of French, the French and France? You want to speak on various topics with the support of a French native tutor?
Each week, we come up to a different theme. It pushes your conversation skills up. It helps you to speak about many topics and to interact in French in multiple contexts.
Regular attendees learn a lot, make improvements and are able to have a chat about numerous topic!
The bonus, you will be able to ask questions to an authentic French native!
**THE CLASS:**
This is a face-to-face conversation class lasting 60 minutes run by a French native & professional tutor (in London since 2016).
This is a Conversation Class dedicated to French learners who struggle to have a spontaneous conversation. If you think your French is rusty, if you feel not really comfortable to interact among a group of other French speakers, this class is for you (if not sure, send a message in French to the organiser).
The class goes on an adapted pace with a first part dedicated to a chit-chat and then we'll focus on a short text to learn about French culture and the language.
We approach the theme, read a short text (you get a copy for the session), speak, learn vocabulary and things about French culture. The theme is always linked to French, the French and France. At the end, we wrap up and keep a few minutes for some miscellaneous questions.
After the class, you will get an email with a list of vocabulary (some words / expressions seen along the class).
This is a very small group class: maximum of 4 attendees and a minimum of 2. So you will speak directly to the tutor.
During the class, the tutor helps you to structure and improve your phrasing, and to develop your understanding.

Carnaby Street Picture Hunt
**Backup plan is pub quiz tho forecast is rain stops by 2.**
**Picture Hunt Meetup:** **Please note the 1.30pm start.** Oxford Circus tube exit 8 in Argyll St outside the Argyll Arms.
Picture Hunt length: 270 metres.
Quiz Finish: O’Neils Carnaby St. Oxford Circus nearest Tube.
Although the famous *Carnaby Street* became known worldwide for its influence on ***‘Sixties’*** London – it does have an interesting history that dates back centuries before that.
Before the street was built, a windmill used to stand on the land where *Carnaby Street* is today. The land surrounding *Carnaby Street* as we know it today – was once the location for ***‘Pest Houses’***, where victims of the ***Great Plague*** of the ***1660’s*** were cared for – treated and buried in pits when they eventually passed away.
*Carnaby Street* as we known it today was initially laid out as a street in ***1682*** by a local bricklayer names *Richard Tyler*. The street took its name from the first house built on the street – ***‘Karnaby House’***.
The \*\*\*Shakespeare’s Head \*\*\*pub halfway down *Carnaby Street* – was once owned by direct relatives of the great playwright ***William Shakespeare***.
In the late ***1700’s*** the very first female butchers operated from *Carnaby Street*. -------------------------------------
Picture Hunts are a great new way to get up to speed with slices of London history while sleuthing around the area.
Everyone is presented with twenty partial photos of objects around an area. Your team mission is to find them. Some well known, some well unknown!
This makes Picture Hunts more interesting and challenging, bringing out the best of your teams detecting skills.
You will also have a map of the area. It will be sub-divided into four sections, P, Q, R, S. Each photo will come from one of these.
Four players max per team, but the lower number teams get a point per player start from the biggest team.
For example, four teams of one, two, three and four. Four player team, no advantage, (the biggest and theoretically the more knowledge between them, except it doesn't always work like that). Three player team, one point start. Two player team, two point start. One player team, three point start.
Scores are always close and around the 15-20 points mark. How many players do you want in your team? There's a dilemma!
The clipboard holder enters one of the letters to note its area location. Dead simple, right? 90 minutes to do the hunt.
We have the usual prizes of chocolate, including some great new varieties.
There is also an equal prize for the funniest team name judged by Sue, my glamorous assistant. Names win prizes too! So there’s everything to play for.
We mark up at the quiz finish point.
Hunts are good fun and the proven experience so far is that members get to know each other better after working in teams as you all have to communicate. Great icebreakers. This is what Meetup is all about. Come and join us.

Day trip by train - historic Lichfield!
Come along on Saturday 16th Mayl to visit the historic city of Lichfield in the county of Staffordshire!
**About Lichfield**
Lichfield is a historic and pretty town situated 14 miles north of Birmingham.
Notable for its three-spired 14th century medieval cathedral, Lichfield was the birthplace of Dr Samuel Johnson, the writer of the first authoritative 'Dictionary of the English Language'*.*
In 2009, the Staffordshire Hoard, the largest hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold and silver metalwork, was found 4 miles south-west of Lichfield.
Lichfield's heyday was in the 18th century, when it developed into a thriving coaching city. This was a period of great intellectual activity; the city was the home of many famous people including Dr Samuel Johnson, actor and playwright David Garrick, physician Erasmus Darwin and the novelist Anna Seward, author of the book 'Black Beauty'. This prompted Johnson's remark that Lichfield was "a city of philosophers".
**Itinerary**
9:07am - catch train to Lichfield City
10:41am - arrive and walk into town
11:00am - guided tour of the cathedral
12:30pm - lunch
1:45pm - guided tour of the town
3:30pm - freetime: Samuel Johnson's Birthplace Museum, Erasmus Darwin House, the Old Guildhall Prison Cells, Wheate & Son's Toy Museum
5:16pm - catch train back to London
7:30pm - arrival back
**Cost**
Entry and tour of the cathedral is £10 per person and the guided tour of the city is £7 per person. Payable on the day by cash, PayPal or Bank Transfer.
You can do both, either or just do your own thing in the city.
**Train Tickets**
Please go ahead and book your own ticket at the Avanti West Coast Railway website - [https://www.avantiwestcoast.co.uk](https://www.avantiwestcoast.co.uk/)/ or on the Trainline website - [https://www.thetrainline.com/](https://www.thetrainline.com/)

You might get them cheaper if you shop around.

C++ on Thames
This month we're doing something a bit different.
Edward Boggis-Rolfe has very kindly offered to host us at the moorings where he has a boat, just up past Tower Bridge.
We'll have access to a small event space, right on the river, which is covered, but outdoors. We'll have a BBQ going, serving sausages, and free drinks. The cost of the food and drink is being covered by Undo - so thanks to Undo, too!
But rather than just be a social event, we do want to include some C++ content, too. We'll have access to a screen and projector - but whether we'll be able to use them depends on the weather!
So we're inviting anyone that wants to give a **lightning talk** to let us know.
The one caveat is that you'll need to be prepared to give it *without slides* if we can't use the projector (we should have audio, at least). As an extra incentive we'll be holding back a few places for people who can give talks. Spaces will be limited overall, but if you do a talk your place is assured!
So submit your ideas here:
[cppldn.uk/speak](https://philnash.typeform.com/to/pJVp7s)
5 minutes, something related to C++, slides optional. Go!

The lunches are open to all, whether you come on the walk or not.
Lookout for the 'London Cultureseekers' group signs on the tables when you get to the cafe.
Hope to see you there!
