PWYC Exhibition - The Art and Culture of PanAfrica
[Pay What You Can for your 18:30 ticket through this link before RSVP](https://www.barbican.org.uk/whats-on/2026/event/project-a-black-planet-the-art-and-culture-of-panafrica) ***MEET BY THE EXHIBITION ENTRANCE/TICKET CHECK*** Explore the impact of Pan-Africanism on artistic and cultural production from the 1920s to the present, through over 300 works – from paintings and installations to posters, journals, and film. The term Pan-Africanism refers to a broad spectrum of political and philosophical movements advocating anti-colonial resistance and transnational solidarity amongst peoples of African descent. While it has long been recognised as a galvanising force in 20th-century global history, Project a Black Planet is the first major exhibition to consider both its influence on visual art and culture, and the critical role of artists in shaping Pan-African visions. Followed by social at the Barbican Centre. *See comments below for updates*

Fungi: Creatures and Cultures -Kit Ondaatje Rolls
Take a whirlwind journey into the wondrous world of the fungal kingdom in this visually stunning book by interdisciplinary artist and biodesigner Kit Ondaatje Rolls. Discover fungi’s far-reaching impact on the fabric of life on Earth – and beyond – through mycology, folklore, art, and activities. More than peculiar organisms underfoot, fungi are catalysts of ecological, cultural and spiritual renewal across the globe. Entwining modern science and ancient wisdom – and ancient science and modern wisdom – this book digs deep into the mycological heart of life on Earth. Complemented by fascinating photography and art in many forms, this transformative book invites you to personally connect with the fungal world: Discover the close relationship between fungi and death, how decay becomes new life and the historical practices of midwives and witches who commune with fungi. Connect with the divine, with mushrooms as “light-filled herbs” which can cleanse, purify and elevate consciousness. Journey from soils to seas to skies: Learning how global networks and food webs are connected by fungi. Listen to the lessons mushrooms teach: From providing medicine and inspiration for many civilizations, to teaching us to embrace paradox and uncertainty. Interact with these fascinating organisms: Build a living psychedelic sanctuary; learn how to read a tree; create your own medicinal mushroom extracts and so much more! This volume features 30 short stories, each entangling the life of a human and a fungus, with each tale ending with a recipe or experiment from notable figures in the fungi community. Entangle yourself in the myth, madness, medicine and malaise of these creatures to deeper your connection with yourself, others, and the world around you.
Mandarin-English language exchange & Asian culture trivia
Mandarin-English language exchange & Asian culture trivia
**Nihao! Looking for a relaxed after-work social with Asian culture trivia, Mandarin-English conversation, and friendly people?** Join us for an easy-going Thursday evening at Loong Express in Fitzrovia. We will start with an Asian Culture Kahoot Quiz in small teams, then move into relaxed food, drinks, and Mandarin-English culture chat. The quiz will include light questions about Asian and Chinese culture, including food, festivals, language, films, music, places, customs, travel, and everyday life. No expert knowledge is needed. The point is to laugh, guess, learn a few surprising things, and meet other culture-curious people in London. After the quiz, we will open up a casual conversation session. Mandarin learners can practise simple phrases, Mandarin speakers can meet English speakers, and people who are mainly here for culture, food, travel, or socialising are very welcome too. This is not a formal class and nobody will be put on the spot. We will use simple colour stickers to help people find conversation partners: ⚪ White sticker = learning Chinese 🔴 Red sticker = speaks Chinese Come alone or bring a friend. Expect quiz rounds, conversation breaks, optional language practice, drinks, food, and a friendly after-work atmosphere. **What to expect** 🎮 Asian culture Kahoot quiz: Light trivia about Asian food, festivals, language, films, music, places, customs, and fun facts. 👥 Small teams: Come alone, with a friend, or join a team when you arrive. 🗣️ Mandarin-English social: Practise Mandarin or English if you want, in a relaxed, no-pressure setting. ⚪🔴 Colour sticker matching: White = learning Chinese; red = speaks Chinese. 💬 Chitchat, food, and drinks: Time to chat, order food or drinks, and meet new people. 🏆 Friendly prizes: Small Loong Express vouchers for the quiz winners and participants. **Food & drinks** 🐉 Loong Express has drinks, snacks, and food available to order onsite. Since they kindly host our meetup, we encourage everyone to order something during the evening if they can — a drink, tea, snack, or meal is a lovely way to support the venue while enjoying the quiz. Food and drinks are ordered separately from the event. **Who this is for** You are warmly welcome if you are: curious about Asian or Chinese culture; looking for a relaxed Thursday night after work; new to London and hoping to meet friendly people; interested in food, language, travel, pop culture, or cultural trivia; learning Mandarin, speaking Mandarin, or simply curious about Chinese language; mainly here for culture, food, travel, or easy social conversation. No prior knowledge of Asian culture or Mandarin is needed. Just bring your curiosity and a phone for Kahoot. **RSVP & attendance** Please update your RSVP if you can no longer attend, so someone else can take your spot. **About the host** Hosted by **London Chinese Culture Meetup**, a friendly London community for people curious about Chinese culture, language, food, games, travel, and new friends. London Chinese Culture Meetup is supported by **Nihao Serica**, **a London-based China travel and culture brand**. From time to time, we share useful China culture and travel notes for anyone curious about exploring China more deeply.

Sunday Assembly London Article Club #77
Sunday Assembly London Article Club #77
Here is a recap of how the Club works: 1\. We meet every six weeks or so in or near the National Theatre\. 2\. We vote in advance and pick two articles from a short list to read before we meet\. Usually one relates to politics/current affairs and the other to history\, culture or science\. 3\. We talk about each one for around half an hour and the beauty of Article Club is that we can think more deeply about the broader themes of a topic\, and how well the article gets to grips with them\. 4\. We each give a score out of 10 for the articles that have been discussed\. 5\. We set the date for the next Article Club and sometimes adjourn to the pub\. I will post in the comments a Google form that you can use to vote for the articles you would like to read and discuss at this event. The point of Article Club is to challenge ourselves to read a diverse range of articles, share them with like-minded people and deal with our anxiety that we aren't reading books. Article Club was set up by Ross Bailey in 2015 who did a fantastic job at running it. Ross was followed by the equally fantastic Claire Ferraro and I (Alistair Baker) have been in the chair for the past eight years. OUR NEXT MEETUP: ARTICLE CLUB #77 Thursday 2nd July 2026 - 7:30pm to around 9:15pm. We sit on the soft round seats in the Lyttelton Theatre bar on the first floor.

Day trip by coach - a church, a battlefield & two towns in Northants! (only £27)
Day trip by coach - a church, a battlefield & two towns in Northants! (only £27)
Come along on Saturday 4th July to visit a 9th century church, a 17th century battlefield and two pretty towns in the county of Northamptonshire! **About the day** Northamptonshire is a landlocked county in the east Midlands. Its quite rural, with lots of farmland and market towns. It also has lots of pretty little villages with stone cottages and thatched roofs. The county has enough local stone buildings to rival the Cotswolds. **All Saints' Church, Brixworth** Brixworth is a historic village, primarily famous for housing All Saints' Church, one of the oldest and largest surviving Anglo-Saxon buildings in the UK. The church dates from the 9th century and is built of local stone and Roman stone, taken from nearby abandoned Roman buildings. **Naseby Battlefield** On the 14th June 1645, one of the pivotal battles of the English Civil War took place here. The Battle of Naseby was where a relatively unknown cavalry commander in the Parliamentary Army, a man named Oliver Cromwell, changed the course of history and routed the Royalist armies under Prince Rupert. **Oundle** Oundle is a quintessential English market town that sits at a bridging point on the River Nene and amidst the rolling countryside. The town has a medieval street layout lined with 17th-century Jacobean and Georgian stone buildings. Today it has many cafes, pubs and independent shops. **Uppingham** Uppingham is a market town with lots of honey coloured buildings and with its art galleries it has become a popular destination for art lovers. It also has lots of independent shops, including lots of antique shops. A little over 1 mile from the town are the earthwork remains of a medieval motte and bailey castle. **Coach seating** * If you wish to reserve a seat on the coach in advance, after you pay please look at the seating plan in the photos [here](https://www.meetup.com/london_cultureseekers/photos/36017632/534585636/) and then email me - [general@cultureseekers.org](http://general@cultureseekers.org), with the seat number/s you wish to reserve. Sunday Asian Culture Social: Snacks, Chitchat & Board Games
Sunday Asian Culture Social: Snacks, Chitchat & Board Games
**Whether you’re from China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, or anywhere else across Asia — or you’re simply curious about Asian culture and looking to meet warm, interesting people — you are genuinely welcome here 🙋** This is our regular Sunday gathering for anyone who enjoys Asian culture, food, languages, games, travel stories, and good company. Think of it as your Sunday ritual: a relaxed, welcoming space to slow down, connect, share a little of your world, and learn something new. Each week has a light cultural focus, but the atmosphere stays easy and social. Some Sundays we explore Chinese names and Hanzi writing; other Sundays we play board games, practise languages, talk about food culture, share travel stories, or introduce tea, festivals, films, music, and everyday customs from across Asia. 🍱 **Bring your own snacks to share** Snacks are not provided by the organiser, but you are warmly encouraged to bring a small snack to share — something from your culture, hometown, or simply something you enjoy. It’s one of the easiest ways to start a conversation. *\*Loong Express also has food and drinks available to buy onsite. Since they kindly host our Sunday socials, we encourage everyone to support the venue by ordering a drink, tea, snack, or meal during the afternoon if you can.* 🗣️ **Language exchange** Practise Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Cantonese, English, or any language you’re learning in a relaxed, no-pressure setting. Native speakers and total beginners are all welcome. 🎲 **Board games & chitchat** Unwind with tabletop games, party games, Mahjong, or simple social games. You don’t need to know the rules before you come. 💬 **Free-flow conversation** Mingle, share stories, ask questions, make friends. No agenda, no performance — just a warm Sunday afternoon with curious people. ✍️ **Occasional cultural activities** Depending on the week, we may also include a light activity such as Chinese names, Hanzi writing, tea culture, travel prep, food stories, or a short culture quiz. **WhatsApp Community** Join our WhatsApp group to chat with members, suggest future activities, and get weekly event updates: [WhatsApp Community link](https://chat.whatsapp.com/KhKITDVOE0A21ytwHMsxfX?s=sh&p=i&ilr=4) **Time & place** 🕒 Every Sunday, 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM 📍 Loong Express 104 Great Portland St London W1W 6PE **A note on RSVP** If your plans change, please cancel your spot in advance so someone else can join. Some weeks include an opening activity, so late arrivals may miss the first part, but you’re still welcome to join when you arrive. **About the Host** Hosted by London Chinese Culture Meetup, supported by [Nihao Serica](http://nihaoserica.com/) — building cultural connections between the UK and Asia. While our meetup is focused on creating a warm local community in London, we’ll occasionally share China culture and travel notes for anyone curious about exploring Chinese cities, food, heritage, and local life. Come join us this Sunday at Loong Express. We’d love to meet you 🌈🥟🀄🍵

We may finish off at The Spurstowe Arms (68 Greenwood Rd, E8 1AB), where they serve cracking pizza and have a beer garden (the beers are...ok), or at The Dove (24-28 Broadway Market, E8 4QJ). Speak Easy (Storytelling)
Speak Easy (Storytelling)
The topic for July is "Shoes" Speak Easy: true stories, told live. The idea is simple: an audience, an open microphone, and great stories. Hilarious, gripping, poignant- it's up to you. Audiences are invited to come to listen or come to tell as folks from all corners of Columbus offer their stories live on stage! Held at Wild Goose Creative's warm, intimate space, this night of tales occurs on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Doors open at 6:30 pm, show starts at 7:00 pm. Please arrive early if you want to tell, as we generally only have room for a limited number of tellers, and the sign-up sheet has a tendency to fill up fast. Formed around the idea that people need stories--they're what hold and draw us together--SpeakEasy celebrates the strangeness and commonness of being human. And in a world of smartphones, Facebook, Twitter, and more . . . it gives people a real, breathing, in-person way to connect. The night is geared for true stories of all kinds, taking the best tales told around kitchen tables, in darkened pubs, on the street corner, and at late-night parties and giving them an audience. Speak Easy is also a great outlet for performers, writers, and artists looking to share their favorite stories and perfect their skills. We strongly encourage tellers to please tell the story rather than read it so we keep within the spirit of good storytelling and stay engaged with the audience. All are welcome. Hang around after the show for a drink and build community!
