Kant’s Cave: How common is 'Common Sense'? - Anja Steinbauer
ATTEND IN PERSON OR ON ZOOM
**NB This event will now take place at the Café of [St. Hilda's East Community Centre](https://www.google.com/maps/@51.5244243,-0.0746385,17z?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI0MDkwNC4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D), 18 Club Row, London E2 7EY. We can go back to the earliest beginnings of the Western philosophical tradition to find references to what we might call “common sense”. Heraclitus states that “thinking is common to all”. However, this seemingly optimistic statement is soon qualified by his lament that people don’t understand, and therefore don’t recognise the importance of, his own philosophical message: they clearly don’t think well enough. The lights are on but no-one’s home, he seems to say. But is he really disappointed at the poor quality of common thought or because others don’t think like him? So, yes, we all think, but what is it that is really shared? What is common about common sense, if it exists at all? In my talk at Kant’s Cave I would like to explore with you the possible meanings, uses and value of the idea of “common sense”. We will discuss thinkers from Kant and Voltaire to Gadamer and Hannah Arendt.

**THE CLASS:**
This is a face-to-face conversation class lasting 60 minutes run by a French native & professional tutor (in London since 2016).

The class goes on an adapted pace with a first part dedicated to a chit-chat and then we'll focus on a short text to learn about French culture and the language.
We approach the theme, read a short text (you get a copy for the session), speak, learn vocabulary and things about French culture. The theme is always linked to French, the French and France. At the end, we wrap up and keep a few minutes for some miscellaneous questions.
After the class, you will get an email with a list of vocabulary (some words / expressions seen along the class).
This is a very small group class: maximum of 4 attendees and a minimum of 2. So you will speak directly to the tutor.
During the class, the tutor helps you to structure and improve your phrasing, and to develop your understanding.

Acting, Performance, Roles and Ritual
We often think of acting as something that happens on stage — but what if performance is part of everyday life? What if, in some sense, we are always performing? This session explores the idea that while acting may be occasional, performance could be constant, raising questions about the roles we play, how they shape our sense of self, and the rituals that may help us process emotion and experience a sense of catharsis.
From the roles we take on at work and in relationships, to the rituals that shape moments like weddings, funerals, and public events, much of what we do follows shared scripts and expectations. But does this mean we are simply playing roles — or is there something more to the self beneath them?
How aware are we of the roles we inhabit — and what difference, if any, is there between acting and everyday performance?
The idea for this evening’s event comes from the following discussion. You might like to listen to it in advance — it may give you a bit more to reflect on going into the conversation:
The session will begin with a short introduction (around 10 minutes) to set out the key ideas. After that, the emphasis is on discussion and participation. The aim is to create a space where ideas can be explored together, with time for questions, reflection, and open conversation.
No prior knowledge is needed — just curiosity and a willingness to think together.
**Where:** Downstairs room, Square Pig, Holborn (private room)
**NB:** The event begins at 7pm, doors open at 6:50pm. Event ends at 9pm
**Format:** 10-minute intro talk → vote on questions → small-group discussions → share insights with the whole room
**Discounts:** If cost is a barrier, we want to make the session as accessible as possible. If you are a student, unemployed, or on a low income, please feel free to send me a direct message to get a reduced-price place.
**Refunds:** If you are unable to attend and would like a refund, please send me a direct message at least 48 hours before the event. Unfortunately, I’m not able to offer refunds for cancellations made after this point, as it becomes difficult to reallocate places at short notice.
Goodge Street Picture Hunt
**Picture Hunt Meetup:** **Goodge St station. At the exit.**
Picture Hunt length: 270 metres.
Quiz Finish: Magnus Pyke or local pub.
"Goodge Street Tube Station is a historic underground station located in the heart of London. Originally opened in 1906, it was one of the first stations to be built on the Central Line of the London Underground. Over the years, Goodge Street has played an important role in the development of the city and has become a landmark destination for tourists and locals alike.
The station itself underwent a major renovation in the 1920s, which saw the addition of new escalators and a redesigned platform layout. It was also during this time that the station began to gain popularity as a meeting place for local poets, writers, and artists. Many of these individuals would gather in the station’s coffee shop to discuss their work and collaborate on new projects."
Picture Hunts are a great new way to get up to speed with slices of London history while sleuthing around the area.
Everyone is presented with twenty partial photos of objects around an area. Your team mission is to find them. Some well known, some well unknown!
This makes Picture Hunts more interesting and challenging, bringing out the best of your teams detecting skills.
You will also have a map of the area. It will be sub-divided into four sections, P, Q, R, S. Each photo will come from one of these.
Four players max per team, but the lower number teams get a point per player start from the biggest team.
For example, four teams of one, two, three and four. Four player team, no advantage, (the biggest and theoretically the more knowledge between them, except it doesn't always work like that). Three player team, one point start. Two player team, two point start. One player team, three point start.
Scores are always close and around the 15-20 points mark. How many players do you want in your team? There's a dilemma!
The clipboard holder enters one of the letters to note its area location. Dead simple, right? 90 minutes to do the hunt.
We have the usual prizes of chocolate, including some great new varieties.
There is also an equal prize for the funniest team name judged by Sue, my glamorous assistant. Names win prizes too! So there’s everything to play for.
We mark up at the quiz finish point. Tbc.
Hunts are good fun and the proven experience so far is that members get to know each other better after working in teams as you all have to communicate. Great icebreakers. This is what Meetup is all about. Come and join us.
**There is a £7 cash/card charge for this event. Pay on the day.**
Contact number on the day is 07422334411 if your transport is delayed.
**If you can’t make it, please cancel using the “Edit RSVP” button. Your consideration is greatly appreciated.**

Long award-winner: Shuggie Bain (2020) by Douglas Stuart
*Shuggie Bain is the Booker prize winning debut novel by Scottish-American writer Douglas Stuart. It tells the story of the youngest of three children, Shuggie, growing up with his alcoholic mother Agnes in 1980s post-industrial working-class Glasgow, Scotland.*
If you've been before and would like to help pay for the Meetup group, you can contribute "£1-2" per meeting (now collected around Dec & Jun). This optional payment does not apply to your first meeting and no-one is turned away for lack of funds.
General plan: by 7pm some of us should be in the upstairs room at the pub but we usually start by discussing books to read in future in case anyone arrives late. Typically we'll talk about the book until after 8pm, when there's a short break to go to the bar, then any further discussion till after 9, though of course you can leave at any point.
The Shirker's Rest takes cards, not cash, and serves a range of soft drinks, wine and spirits in addition to their beer and cider selection [https://theshirkersrest.co.uk/drinks/ ](https://theshirkersrest.co.uk/drinks/)\- they don't have a kitchen but encourage you to order from [https://yardsalepizza.com/menu/](https://yardsalepizza.com/menu/) ..!
**COVID-19 safety measures**
This is indoors though we should be able to open at least one window. Please do not attend if you feel unwell, or have a positive Covid test/symptoms - you are encouraged to a) be as vaccinated as you can, b) wear a mask if you prefer, c) follow current Covid precautions, especially if you're at risk of passing on or catching the virus
Cinema: The Thin Man (1934)
The Thin Man sounds utterly fun! It is from the 1930s when wit and glamour was in. By all accounts Myrna Loy and William Powell play off each other perfectly. One of my friends confirmed enthusiastically that this is a good film and lots of fun. A comedy-detective film is right up my street. I'm looking forward to it, and even leaving the office early for. If you're free, join me!
The attendance fee is £2. We can catch up to discuss the film and catch up in the Atrium bar afterwards.
>> Book your own ticket (£8.50 standard, £7.50 member): https://www.thegardencinema.co.uk/film/the-thin-man/
This is part of the Garden Cinema's Screwball Comedy season over the summer. I can't wait.
"The Thin Man (1934) is the first installment of a popular series of six films casting a sophisticated, glamorous, pleasure-seeking, and urbane husband-wife detective team (William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles). It became one of the defining films of the classic era in the comedy-detective subgenre. The film's murder mystery story took a back seat to the romantic screwball comedy, featuring the splendid, snappy and flirty banter between the rich, carefree married couple. They were known for sleuthing, solving murders, wisecracking one-liners, affectionate witticisms, delightful teasing and one-upmanship, alcoholic fun with plenty of martinis (two years after the end of Prohibition), a wire-haired terrier named Asta (actually named Skippy), and a loving relationship - often punctuated with quick kisses and slight hiccups. - Filmsite Movie Review Cast: William Powell, Myrna Loy, Skippy (Asta), Maureen O'Sullivan, Edward Ellis, Nat Pendleton, Minna Gombell"
London meet-up: ORG meets CAAT
**For our next London meet-up on the 1st of June we have teamed up with CAAT (Campaign Against Arms Trade).**
Join us to discuss the role of Big Tech companies in the military-industrial complex, Palantir, and how technologies that we use every day are being deployed in wars and genocides.
We will be also talking about what Tech alternatives exist, how we can move away from these Big Tech companies, and how we can fight back for our digital independence.

FREE The Coming of Age Exhibition
[Follow this link for more info, no tickets needed](https://wellcomecollection.org/exhibitions/the-coming-of-age)
‘The Coming of Age’ explores experiences and perceptions of ageing, from adolescence to later life, and asks how societies can adapt for us all to age better.
Across the globe, people are living longer. One in ten children in the UK are expected to live beyond the age of 100. But who gets to live longer and ‘age well’? This exhibition explores how experiences of age are shaped by our environment, culture and society.
‘The Coming of Age’ features more than 120 artworks and objects, including historical artefacts and works by contemporary artists.
We will join the free intro tour at 14:15 if it's running, then visit by ourselves and you can also check the 'Being Human' permanent exhibition afterwards.
When you finish, meet us at the cafe to socialise, if full we will go to a venue nearby.
